*** edit ***

link is updated. it changed, somehow.. <img src=" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

the individual moves that make up each combination movement are now individually linked from the lessons index.

Bender! Thats a nice looking site...it's not very HomeofPoiey to call the site creator an idiot.

In fact, I'm not sure why you have, it seems to me they have done a great job, and I'd love to have a site looking as good as that one.

Not everyone feels they should contribute tens of thousands of dollars a year to bandwidth like our selfless Malcolm.

Kudos to the creator of this site, Yaaaay for you!

hmmm (playing dumb again) what does idoit mean?

Brain cranks away furiously like a runaway unicyle...

"No such word as idoit...perhaps there was a space missing from Ido It"

Ido = An artificial language based on Esperanto (i think)

so, therefore, Ido it, must mean, "converting into ido"

so, if i am an "ido it", then i must be the conversion of charles into Esperanto or ido....

hmmm...no names as far as i know in ido, so, the Esperanto version of Charles is likely to be Carlos...

AHA!

I REALLY AM A CARLOS!

Thank you, Nix, I never knew i was a carlos, but sometimes these thigns happen without anyone knowing quite why.

more lessons to come tonight.
btw i am an idiot for not crediting Jespa for taking the footage.

** edit **
also nyx, if i called it a no hands cartwheel or side arial, the gymnasts would be happy, the capoeiristas would becao me in the head.
if i called it an au sem mao, the gymnasts would asphyxiate me with their thighs-a-la bladerunner. So i decided upon a lowest common denominator name - Since it's twirling and instruction we're talking here, I had opted for the most recognisable name for joe twirler.

i those butterfly waistwraps (sorry, sidetucks )

very spiffy use of stick momentum, Mr Bender, and that was superb instructional type stuff on the page too.

But as for the caramel mcfwirly bit where you leap around - i refuse to believe you can do that. It was computer graphics, you were on a wire, i am hallucinating and nothing is real.

*beats off green-eyed monsters with a stick*

please sir, can i have some more?

Psi, to safely pull off a side aerial, you'll need to condition your body and train your mind.
standard stretches in capoeira and gymnastics will give you the flexibility and static strength you need. Training in gymnastics and capoeira will also give youthe explosive strength you will need to launch yourself from akward angles with little or no setup.
please always remember tho, is that you must only progress to the next logical move in terms of difficulty & danger, having competency in the prerequisite movements (i.e. don't try any jumps before you know how to fall not-on-your-head!)
always keep up your agility and strength training, becuase several days of inaction will actually set you back in terms of progress! I thought that was crap but it's true! winter is the great devil.
Always stretch, it at least doubles the amount of strain you put on your joints before you can injure them. that is totally vital. gymnastics usually took about 25min of stetches before anything! unfortunately gymnastics does not give you the lifestyle philosophy that yoga and capo require you to learn. but it IS a great way to meet funky and fit peers. in leotards.

Deepsoulsheep, you are a person of few words and much llama.

mr simian, thanks for the nice compliment! I have to share my credit with green-eyed monster - take a bow!
:makes hand gesture to random direction:

Psi, I saw it on some documentary featuring Keanu Reeves and Carrey-Anne Moss. They get people to learn by reminding themselve to forget kitchen utensils.
or something.

Charles, resisting the urge to fire a canon at you, I am humbled at that statement! It was designed for low bandwidth and in my judgement can't compete with broadband sites.

Nice one bruva!!!

Recently been playing with those WW / mexican wave combos too...but dont confuse the butterfly ww with the ww/mexican, as the full bfly ww is completely possible too, and looks a treat! I cant do it smooth everytime, but it has definite potential.

as for the no-hand cartwheel..thats nuts. much respect!!

Glad to see you still pushing the boundaries.

Will we get to meet at the Infected Mushroom / Hallucinogen Live Nov 25 Earthcore or what?

Perhaps NYE Confest? Rainbow Serpent?

seeya hopefully,

Josh

He's not wrong
Unfortunately, despite practicing it solidly since February i still cant do it smooth everytime either Goddam clashy sticks! it would be ok if they made crackly lightsabre noises, at least that would be dramatic. Instead they go ~blonk~ and suddenly i've got a behind the back leg\stick\arm pretzel
This occured on every single one of the five or six times i attempted it on video in the last week

see yu soon, josharama! i apologise to youse for not adopting the naming converntions of 'mexican wave' and 'ww' cus i don't want to use poi terms/case poi confusion and i want to use absolutely minimum arbiratary name/nicknames like mexican waves when i can describe them physically
of course, i am a git, and everyone has the right to say 'he's a git, not only does he not use our terms, he touches himself.'

hey simian, by youse guys saying full butterfly, do ya mean same time bfly poi? im thick i think!
/read up on poi

next lesson up will be acrobatics

Butterfly = 2 sticks rotating in opposite directions, no actual move is implied

Full btb waistwrap = sidetuck on one side to sidetuck on the other side

so in poi terms (i don't know why you don't like using poi words for double staff, because they're really handy) what you do on the first video is a full btb butterfly waistwrap, with the non-stretching hands going high (the mexican wave bit), seperating the circles you're making (followed by crazy jumpy bit, but we'll ignore that cause i don't understand it )

what Josh was talking about was keeping your hands nearer to each other as you do your sidetucks, doing butterfly crossovers on either side as you do it.

i think...

You got it Simian!

the full bfly ww requires simultaneous btb crossing and your hands always stay together...and there doesnt need to be any finger spinning either.

erm the lessons be updated with an acrobatic movement animation, yipee

i had a think over the weekend and decided to adopt the 'waistwraps' term over 'sidetuck' because as simian said it's handy.

my big aversion to non-staff moves for naming staff moves is that while there are many many handy similarities, there are also crucial differences that come with the association.
ie even if you could properly perform the poi waistwrap action with staff, it's not the move being described above.
it would be infinitely simpler to use common twirling terms between different toys, but they simply are different moves and would like to use different names to reflect this vital difference.

my aversion aside, waistwraps do describe it well to a certain degree too - because i didn't want to confuse it with a double waistroll swap (which simultaneously wraps the waist horizontally from opposite sides with staves, swapping hands, performed with a 180 deg bodyturn.)

Josh, that full bfy is bewdiful concept and happily will be one i will be trying out for size! i certainly never thought of it before your great suggestion, thank ye matey! A nang or 10 for you and your missus at Earthcore for your help!

narf!

Erm bender, you have me obsessed with doing things, I can't do. I found this though home learning

I know you likely haven't seen it but do you thinks it's possible to learn this stuff yourself. Does that look like a worthwhile buy? I mean if it could progress me to doing no handed cartwheels is 6 hours I'd defo go for it.
