I was wondering If any-one out there does double throws to have a bit of a brain pick as I've got just about as far as I can get, ie doubles to single cross coversion and back, under legs, round the back, cascades, flashes, and some I can't think of names for but, invole really high throws and that thing you do behind your back witch was proberly the 1st trick you learned. I could discribe some more but I think people would understand me less so I'm leaving this at that..

I think the easiest horizontal throw to do with Doubles is when you have em going in a stacked corkscrew (helix). As the lead staff in the pattern reaches the top you throw it straight up spinning horizontally, and you do a straight helicopter pass over your head with the other staff. Then you catch the thrown staff in your free hand and it becomes the following staff in the pattern. Done continuously and you have a nice cascading effect.

I remember learning this move, I did it for hours and hours at a really good Trance party in NSW...

BTW - check out the search function, there have been several long threads on Double Staff throwing, although admittedly, there has been more discussion of throwing BOTH staves at the same time rather than one at a time.

Tryed it josh was fun thanx can also flash it(throwing one after other but both remain in air for short time) instead of passing over the head, just throw the 1st long and 2nd short or else the sky is falling. also any body know throws from back-wards weave?

AnonymousPLATINUM Member

Theres a really nice one that Rob taught me for forward and reverse weave;

As you are about to cross the first staff up and to the other side of your body you release it and sweep the other stick through the gap and then catch the original staff in the original hand. The throw is done quite low and its really quick and nice.

Somthing I've been playing around with my larger staffs...

Tuck one staff under your arm (pointing horizontally) when the other is airborne, catch the airborne one on the end of the first one and throw it from there (or do some devil sticking then throw it).

I'm not sure what it looks like, but for me at least, it seems original.

mmm I think I get it josh? passing the first stick behind your back under your arm, catching it with the origanal hand as the other stick is doing much the same in reverse but out of sinque. no all I have to do is stop bashing them together at the front. & very origanalio charles but I'm afraid my under-arms are to hairy and my sticks too short. So has any-one actually tried juggling 3 staffs in a cascade front spining once then throwing in a circular fashion to catch in the other hand I can do two but adding a third seems pretty hard?

Thanks Dwuanos, i was al ready to go into the reasons why a cascade is a very dangerous pattern to try with staves.

I've done a reasonable shower with smaller staves, but I still ended up burning myself too much for my liking.

I found it best to do very gentle slow spins when doing three, so that they have one leading end during the whole throw. It makes it easier to catch them in the middle, and I don't get blinded as much by the flash/flash/flash of six spinning balls of fire.

Thanks for the reminder, I should keep practicing that (WITHOUT THE FIRE)...

I always thought the best way to juggle three would be in a wall plane with the sticks alternating direction...

A bit like the way people juggle three devil sticks.

what on earth is a wall plane, Josh???

The only ways to juggle objects I can think of is

1. Columns , straight up and down in it's own airpsace, no crossing

2. Crossing or Cascade style (standard 3 ball juggle

3. a shower or halfshower where the objects all follow each other through the same pattern and airspace, staying in the same position relative ot each other.

Does a wall plane come near any of theose or there another technique I can' think of at the moment???

wall plane = the plane in space that you normally juggle on.
Ie stand facing a wall, its that plane.

As for 3 staffs
I've tried regular cascade but not with fire.
I think a 1/2 shower in the wall plane would be lovely right hand throws dips (a type of club throw) the left hand throws over the top

Somewhere lurking on a disused CDROM I have a video of a girl juggling 8 flower sticks...

I reckon 3 devil stick (ie lightweight short thin sticks) twirling would be well wicked.

Of coruse, you would need to know how to juggle 3 clubs first.

One that i've been doing lately is with doubles

doing Parallel Rotors (ie one hand in fwd the other in rvs)

The hand thats doing the fwd rotor does an under leg throw while the other hand does a pinwheel behind the head pass.

Then with your newly free hand reach under your other leg and do an underleg catch of the first staff, which ends up on the other side

So its an underleg throw to opposite underleg catch while doing a pinwheel pass with the other.

Pretty neat!

i can only perform that combo vertically, and have never considered such a nifty variation!
as with my combo, you have turned my head on it's side!

Incompletes I remember now!

When normally you would throw the staff up from one hand to the other, in this case you do a short throw back into the same hand. Makes for nice extra spins in good places like Waist Wrap position and BTB.

Looking forward to chucky staffage with you again this weeknd Josh.

Loving these throws, seems to add some unpredictableness to my doubles that I think I was starting to lack

Nix that BTB chuck from pin wheel sounds rad...I think I used to do one where you chuck it from the top of a pin wheel then body spin 180 and catch in the same hand, but your variation sounds more radical

Looking forward to staffage this weekend, and the following w/end in EdinBurgh with the Pookas!

Woohoo!

been trying double throws with a buddy:

here's what we've been working on:

One staff each, throwing in synch to eachother

One staff each, throwing one staff to partner, he does doubles for 8 bars of music, throws one to me, we do singles for another 8, throws to me I do doubles. We're trying lots of variations on this one.

Throwing the two staff together to eachother at once, helicopters and rotars mainly

Three staff, one person with doubles, the other with singles, using throws to alternate who does doubles.

Working mainly with two staff each at the moment. Lots of painful memories. ouch. Nowhere near completion.

someday three each, doing juggling passes

I'm going straight to hell.
Better practice my fire show.

If you've done 6 club passing it's not a great step to 4 staff passing really. You just spin justaposic oppisites of the one spin foward, one spin back weave and throw every 3rd, then work your way up. rocking! Thanx for more insightful stuff to do with stix Josh, my hamstrings are crying red rum, and I always end up on my ass with stix raining on my head! Luvin' it
