Any ideas about how to break in new staff wicks?? (Or poi wicks for that matter...) I have heard long soaks, or short soaks followed by several quick burns....etc...

Any thoughts, experiences???

Cheers!

Urine. Lots and lots of urine. The uric acid and amonia cause a chemical change in the kevlar which conditions it for high temperatures. I use cow urine just because it's fun to retrieve but you may not find this task as enjoyable as I do.

Ummm, urine could work... but personally I've been told to soak them for ages, then to burn them, blow them out, soak them and then do it again.
5 times I've heard, but hey, I did mine 3 times and they still look brand new... except they're black...

Hmmm......about the urine...

I suppose that there is not that much to do in Nova Scotia so chasing cows is pretty fun (Hey- I know, I'm from Vermont)

heh

any other ideas anyone, fuel choices for breaking in new wicks (kerosene or white gas?)

1. Soak for a minute or two.

2. Light

3. Play around

4. Don't let them go out the first few burns, as the flame gets noticably smaller, smother them, wait 20 seconds and redunk again.

All in my opinion of course!

I'd agree, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk, play, dunk until you have no fuel left. Actually, that's me almost everytime I firetwirl. That would explain where all my fuel goes too...

Yeah, always dunk when hot, even if you're not having another burn afterwards. They soak up loads more paraffin when hot and then next time you'll be burning your fuel not your wick. They will last much longer.

I do agree with lighting them and letting them go out a few times (soaking them while hot each time) when they're new.

Urine, Yuck.I have a lovely image of a chick squating over her wicks to take a leak.

Well I did nothing special with mine.
I soaked my wicks properly, lit them, played until burn out.
By chance I did this four times, one light after the other.
Two years down the line my wicks are still cooking.
So I'm not really sure if it really matters how you break your wicks in?

Don't light them you'll lose that loverly new look, you'll get black shit all over your clothes. They'll start stinking of petro-chemicals, and sadly urine if you follow some of this advice. And they're harder to get on airplanes. No I just have mine hanging on a wall with my guns. Then just borrow other peoples toys.

Now its my turn to wonder who is being serious! You didn't actually bleach your kevlar did you?

Just for anyone else who is out there, it's a dangerous choice to put any new chemicals onto a fire toy that is intended to be lit up and twirled.

I'll see if I can find out the properties of bleach when it has dried on a material, and what its reactions can be in that state...

Not to mention, the fact you may be eating away at the wick, bleach is a pretty powerful stuff that rips through cotton and synthetics like acid!

Yep, I must agree, bleach can and WILL eat away at fabric, especially if you dunk it in straight bleach or very slightly diluted...and let it sit...

And hey, kevlar is SUPPOSED to be yellow! So don't try to get this white supremacy thing going...

heh, just kidding...

And who is afraid of a little soot??? We are FIRESPINNERS goshdarnit!!! Big deal if it has a little soot and stench, that more than pays for the experience of fire!

So burn on!!

oh and yeah, thanks for all the good and amusing advice...

Afraid of soot...Thanks Catastrophic, I hadn't noticed that little comment.

You should see me when i come home after a 4 hour busking session! I look more like achimney sweep than a fire performer.

My wife leaves a towel in our garage, i take of my costume, dump it in the washing machine, wrap the towel around myself and bound up the stairs, straight inot th ebathroom and then have a shower.

After the shower, my angel points out the soot marks i've missed, i get dressed and then go around the house erasing any soot marks i've left on door handles and light switches etc...

It's qwuite fun actually
