Anyone ever tried to make apoi that does not burn but just smoke instead? When spinning with a firestarter fuel when the fire went out the poi were leaving a beautiful trail of smoke behind but it lasted too short.. I would like to make the duration longer...

Smile.. It confuses people..:)

After writing this i had another idea... Have you tried sparklers... they let off a think trail which goes quick and have light. They'll be easy to attach with the metal bit at the bottom.

I wouldn't try any sort of smoke grenade, they put out insane ammounts of smoke, although there are probably cold burn smoke grenades that would be slightly more managable..

just curious... anyone tried burning magnesium?

sounds like a good idea although it burns very quick and you will need to have a lot to keep it going for even a short time... oh and its f*cking hot!

New Concept: Grab a handful of Inscents and wrap them in wire. Do this twice. Attach to chains. Use a blowtorch to light the ends (because they catch fire a little slow). Spin, and Smoke.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a trick, this is a stunt. The difference between a stunt and a trick is that a trick is something that tricks or fools the audience, a stunt is something that only an idiot would do -Ivan, Ash Circle, 10/04/03

why not just put dry ice in a chicken wire cage?

dry ice doesnt work like that unless you treat it in a science lab. its instant steam type stuff - this is unless you have different stuff to waht i have seen.

First we have to make them smoke... Adding color shouldn't be SUCH a problem(especially black )

hey guess what lurch, that potassium nitrate and sugar mix....yeah just thought u might want to know that is mad TOXIC, and can be LETHAL if you inhale too much
so personally id suggest u take that off the thread or edit it in some way before some kid tries it and gets really sick and his\her parents send pissed off emails (or worse acourt order!) to HOP)....but thats just me.....

and on the whole magnesium idea, thats for coloured flames, magnesium burns this crisp silver white, but its extremely hot, if i remember right its around the temp of the surface of the sun........or maybe thats lightning...either way its hot as F#$K, as in if you use enough, u could potentially melt your wicks (kevlar doesnt burn but can melt)
they use magnesium in underwater flares because it burns so bright and hot that you can see it for a very long distance underwater

Ok try this. Make a cheap set of cotton poi. (socks or t-shirts) go to a bowling ally and buy a bag of resin powder. Bowlers use it to dry their hands. Go to the liquor store and get a bottle of everclear or some other really high proof alcohol. Mix the resin powder with the everclear in a seperate container making a slurry. Shake the mixture really well and quickly pour onto the wick. This should work really well for daytime use. The resin powder will be less of a spray hazard and the alcohol should be just enough flame to make the resin smoke. Try it out it should be a cheap experiment. Try diferent amounts of resin and even diferent fuels.

Note the alcohol is an almost invisible fire, I'm going for more focus on smoke.

have you thought about toxicity??????
some of this stuff isnt exactly all to great for you..........you have to remember that not only when your spinning that youll have to deal with it, but your audiance shouldnt be harmed by the smoke as well

Darkpoet are you talking about my suggestion with the resin and alcohol? As far as smoke goes, I'd guess natural resin would be as safe as it gets. By all means if you know a safer smoke to use post it. smile

.......ok

Natual DOES NOT EQUAL SAFE!!!

petrol is a naturally forming chemical, so is radon, and many other maladies that we suffer from day to day. Natural by no means atol means safe. As far as a "safe" smoke, personally i dont think there would be just because of the amount of smoke needed to do the effect your looking for. Smoke itself is a carcinogen whether your burning a candle, cig, a wood fire, your poi....anything smoke is a carcinogen. umm

True, there is no really safe smoke.. But still what I want is a relatively small amount of smoke, enough to leave a decent and visible trail and then dissolve... The same fx as on the firepoi photos, only that istead of the fire trail I'd have a smoke trail. I've seen something like this before only there was too little smoke and it lasted too short... There is no way I'd be doing this inside as the smoke would soon fill the entire room and then the danger of carcinnogens and stuff would be bigger...

You know, I did mention in one of my earlier posts that I didn't want this to turn into a debate over toxicity. Yes yes yes I know all smoke is toxic. Point made. Please note any of my uses of works like "relatively" and "safer". Lets get on with finding the best and safest way to make the smoke effect. As far as an audience is concerned, smoke poi is not for indoor use. Outdoors in a well ventilated (but not windy) area will probrably be better than any casino or resturaunt (in Nevada) as far as smoke inhilation.

lol i was having the same idea even though ive just started with poi I just like playing with fire and sorts... you could always try like a paste made up of KNo3 powder (saltpeter) or if you will tree stump remover.. and sugar and if you re really creative a dye.. attatch a fuze to each and by all means smoke yourself out..

Id say itd look pretty funky if its done well especially with dye lol smile
Might try it myself

I know my sparklers produce a lot of smoke some times. That's looks cool because then the absurdly bright color is within it's own haze. Hard to breath in though.
