They're cool.
I've recently made some monkey fist meteors and poi(non fire) and I spend a lot of time messing with knots/macrame.
The chunky poi sixth picture down are interesting; is it the knot that uses four ends in a symmetrical swastica like pattern? (I know its got a name but I can't remember it)

Mmmmmm very nice!
How much rope did you use on the twirly ropes, 4th pic? & how long are they? I made some foot long ropes by folding the rope in half, twisting it up, & doing that again. Nice & easy, but the tension in the rope means it holds less kero & only burns for a few mins.

Dave, it is similar to that swastica knot, but with 6 ends. Liam thinks they're incredibly ugly, and I kind of agree, but the flame is bigger than him and lasts for ages.
Firemorph, 15' each of the 3/8" rope. The wick is about 16" long. I was going to try the twisty type you made but I'm glad I didn't if they go out real quick. However, I don't think the tension is the reason. In fact, I think the more taught the rope, the longer it seems to burn for. Maybe there just isn't enough kevlar in them.
UCOF, that there is the Tempests' gravel. It is the most photogenic gravel on the market and its origin is a closely guarded secret available only to Tempests and me. So there.

BAH! I thought of making macrame fire ropes the other day and planned to make them with the kevlar I'm hoping to get for my BD...

Try any of these knots that look like they'll work and it's bound to turn out looking great. The one I used on the short staffs is a half-knot sinnet, and it is incredibly easy and quick.
Basically, just try any repeated knot, using any number of kevlar ends, and 3 out of 4 times it'll make a nice pattern of some kind.

What a great idea, downhill rough terrain racing on Munis with the added challenge of having to create a plant pot holder on the way down!

Coming a bit late to this thread...
Jo--I made a set of knot-wicked staffs a while back. For unrelated reasons, I haven't burned them yet, so I can't attest to the quality of this approach, but...I knotted my way from the tip towards the center. I had pre-drilled a small hole through the shaf at the point where I wanted to stopt, and when I got to that point with the wicking, I passed a stout piece of stainless wire through the hole, wrapped that over the tips, and twisted it down.

Sweet idea mate!
I've just relied on the knot and a bit of PVA glue - they've done ok but an end came off once (at a gig too ) . That sounds like it'll work nicely - thanks a lot.

i did the same knot as you, jo, making a flag, only i used 1/4" rope instead of 3/8", and it is a little itghter and the spiral around the staff is more pronounced, though i bet the burn is pretty much the same...
