At a concert I went to a few weeks back I had the opportunity to speak with a linguist. When we discussed what I do, and I said I use Staves, I was complimented for my use of language.

And this is why...

What people have been calling staff's and trying to agree on are properly termed Staves and what you use them for is staffing, or staff spinning.
In the technical sense, when we say we short or long staff, that would be more in reference to time length rather than actual tool used.

I found this fascinating, and it made me feel really good...cause I have taken flack for using the term stave in the past!

Just wanted to share!

that took me far far too long to work out

i reckon the most accurate term for the discipline we call staff is cylinder rotation and manipulation.

I just really don't like the word stave. The hard 'A' is just a bit nasty. Sounds like someone with a nasal accent trying to say Steve.
