Depends on the size - short = stick, long = staff.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

It doesn't, it's what you do with it that counts!! hehehe

The Japanese have special names for their staffs depending on length:

6 foot - Rokushakubo or just Bo
5 foot - Jo
3 foot - Hanbo
1 foot - Shobo

I personally would call it a staff whatever length it is, to me a staff is a length of wood that has been crafted for a purpose (with the exception of the walking stick of course!!); fighting, walking, displays, etc. A stick is a piece of tree you pick up off the floor and get your dog to fetch when you're in the park.

Cass, I never knew such thoughts existed in that innocent little head of yours, I'm truly shocked!!!!

For me, a stick turns into a staff at about 3 and a half feet.
That's because I'm calling it a stick when it can feasibly be used as a walking stick held by a hand over the end.
When it's more comfortable to hold it gripped around it as opposed to over it, that's when it's a staff.
Obviously that'll change depending on who's holding it, but that's just how I see it - I'm sure everyone else has a different interpretation, but they're still going to know what I'm talking about whatever I call the thing they're spinning

STICK!

Staff sounds too grand, its just a stick.

also, 'going to play stick' sounds better than 'off to practice staff'

i just like the plosive sound of Stick! as aposed to the dropoff stafffff.

STICK!

This is a post by tom, all spelling is deleberate

I suppose if everyone called them sticks, we'd not have to bother arguing if the correct plural is 'staffs' or 'staves'
