After much consultations with the gods of POI, it has been discovered the word 'poi' is correctly pronounced with a silent 'i'. hence the correct pronunciation is much closer to 'po(h)'

I trust you will all amend your vocabularies asap.

Poi-Poi is also one of the terms used for the food. This particular version of the food is more pasty and less smoothe than it's popular Poi cousin, but in my eyes equally as disgusting. Some Polynesian transplants in my high school loved the stuff, and their mom insisted I try it all. They had some tasty fried flowers though. *shrug*

I like RD's explaination better, which is mentioned in a few books I have read on the Maori culture along similar lines but not so concisely so thank you RD for that.
