Throughout the world of poi there walk a breed aside from other moves. Many have claimed that they don’t exist, or that they did, but that they died out with some long lost tribe of poi masters, and now they are “just legends”. But, they exist, and not just in the fairy tales we tell young poisters and poiettes to make then scared of the bogie poi that live under their beds.

The Jedi set are the most technical of the most technical moves.
The Jedi set are the poi swinging moves which defy the known laws of the physical world.
For everyone of them, at the moment only a handful are known, is utterly a Jedi move.

Until recently the easiest known move in the the jedi set was a 5 beat weave to reverse 5 beat weave behind the back, preferably done in the wall plane. And yet some exciting new discoveries uncovered using the latest state of the are technology in archeopoilogy. New additions have been threatening to join the ranks of the Jedi set, The Eight Council of Poi demi-gods are currently in congress to determine the place if any of these exciting new finds which include 2 air wraps within the Jedi set.

Not everything is known of the origins of the Jedi set. But it is much hinted in pagan folklaw, that in days of old back in martober two mysterious men, possibly of a tribe of orangeness denoted by their attire met in a misty field in Clay-pham a small village near Londinium. And lo, One of them who may have been the legendary Jedi Tony Touch spaketh unto the other, (the ugly stupid one with poor personal hygiene) who is, it is rumoured to be a distant forefather of the author. (alas the lineage has never been proven).

“That move is utterly Jedi.”

And to the sounds of trumpets from between the legs of a chorus of angels, the Jedi set was gently placed by a large crane amongst the meeting of poiers.
And the quest began...

That was many moons ago, and little remains to document what happened in that original quest...

would that be jedi?

fwd to rev 5bt btb in wall plane - hard as f*ck i say. i still only know two people that spin it neatly. possibly superceded by the 7bt version but i've never seen that spun so i remain on the side of the 5bt until someone gets bendy enough to spin it with 7.

dude where have ya been?

7bt no wrap pending you don't do that ridiculous elbow over elbow crap... is easy to go from 7bt foward to reverse.. like EASY... its not jerky or anything because aslong as you do a no wrap 7 bt that's not elbow over elbow..

and as far as the 5bt BTB in the wall plane.. LOL.. I just taught my boy the other day how to do 7bt BTB... so hopefulyl within the next day or wo there will be another person other then me that does them in the wall plane..

If I had to list what I thought was hard...

I'd say the 5bt BTB Butterfly weave in the wall plane.. going from left front to back to right front.. err.. that's one of the few things thats kicking my arse at the moment..

How, pray tell, do you get the extra 2 beats without crossing your elbows? Do you cross your wrists then fingers?

I apologise in advance if that looks stupid, I just felt it'd been too long since I used the words 'pray tell'

Anyway, I have my own moves which I think are Jedi:

Luuuuuuke, it is your desssssssstiny:
Hold 1 poi in the left hand with it hanging down by your side.
Spin forward side plane circles with the right poi.

Look sir... Droids:
Hold 1 poi in the left hand with it hanging down by your side.
Spin backward side plane circles with the right poi.

Right, these two are slightly harder.
Luuuuuuke, I am your faaaaaartherrrrr:
Hold 1 poi in the right hand with it hanging down by your side.
Spin forward side plane circles with the left poi.

Nooooooooooooooooo:
Hold 1 poi in the right hand with it hanging down by your side.
Spin backward side plane circles with the left poi.

I've not seen anyone else do these so they must be far too hard for anyone else, I'm going to claim them as my signature moves

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Flowers are smaller circles within a larger circle. The easiest is to have your right hand straight up, and your left hand straight down and your poi spinning clockwise. Then move your hands clockwise as the poi spin. I usually stop my hands at each 90 degree point for a circle.

Variants are amount of beats in each flower, directions of poi and your arms (try the above move with your hands moving counter clockwise).

My favourite move at the moment, and I think it's pretty jedi is an Airwrap Flower - the above move, but with an air wrap in each beat.

well get with the program.. and come see what us swamp boys are doing...

j/k man... me being out here in BFE makes it really hard to find people to learn from and stuff.. so we end up coming up with I guess crazy shit...

Mr. Monkey... I know this is going to sound absurd but you twist a littlemore with you hands and wrists... Mainly the wrists... when I show people the 7 bt, I stress 'it's all in the wrists'.. because I learned the forward 7bt no wrap doing elbow over elbow, 90 degrees, and all that stuff.. and it looks ridiculous and doesn't flow well for doing transitions... So I figure there had to be anbother way... and see I've been doing a lot of straight arm stuff.. By that Imean I keep one arm straigt while I weave the other around it.. so you get a 5bt weave while keeping one arm straight out on each side.. now that lead me to learn (much like getting extra beats with a TTN)how to spiral my arm around my straight arm.. which eventually developed into a reverse 7bt no wrap weave... It took me a while to do it with the forward weave because of the way you twist the arms, but the result was well worht it, because now I can do a continuously flowing 7bt weave circle (you know forward rto rev to for) both in front and BTB...

I used to think 7 bt was ridiculous.. but then I found that it makes things much nicer when doing seperatiosn.. because instead of changing sides immediately as the seperation ends (as per the 5bt weave) you get an extra rotation.. it makes, in my opinion (which is just my opinion) the seperatiosn cleaner the way the circle opens and closes on each side.. it doesn't seem so sudden.. and it also helps a -LOT- when using seperations both in front and especially BTB during wallplane weaves..

I'm gonna have to check into flowers though.. one descrip sounds like stuff I do.. the other doesn't.. and I need to find out about isolations too.. I hear a lot about them, but don't know exactly what they are.. (one of the few things that I'm not picking up by reading hehe..)

Backwards (rev butterfly) double neck wrap on fire? Seems easy no? I can do em pretty reproducably without fire. Dunno how fire would add or subtract to the endevor.

And this is me we're talkin' about.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

enyce - back in the day i agreed with you.
i believe it is included because it is one of the most tech body wraps there are.
tis a thru-wrap for a start and not only that but part of the move is blind.

fire is hot and looks pretty - this adds lots to the endeavour (there's a 'u' in there too).
seriously though, try doing a fwds double neckwrap and mess it up on purpose - you end up with two poi heads wrapped around your neck once each and you are left bending over them with your face directly above them.
now imagine it with fire again...

again i suggest the image of faces dripping onto shoes

I come before the council with a new move for jedi masters. Though i am but a padawan (havent nailed btb 5bt...yet). I trust this move will astond and amaze. Behold the FEMAR GRIP.

split time, side plain, left poi under right leg. Grip the poi in between ur thigh and calf, letting go of the handle and keeping the poi spinning with small presice leg movements. When the poi is at the bottom of the cirle, let go and it 'should' fly up back into ur hand. Voila, the femar grip!!

Any one seen this done before?

Question... may I approch the council...?

For the past four months now I've been able to get the double wrap release moves which have been noted as Sith moves... however I have been learning the ways of the Jedi now for two months, and can now do Isolations and Hyperloops... it's not much but would it not be better to be part of the jedi than to fall to the ways of the Sith...

All I ask is to learn under the watchful eyes of the Jedi council... and start my training...

are you sure this is all the world of poi has to offer for top 'purebreed' moves (excluding all the endless variations on simpler moves)..? I can do all of the jedi set in a row without fail, apart from flowers which sound beauty (although I haven't seen them cause the video's broke)and I'm a bit worried that Im running out of new moves to learn, and that my poi will end up just repeating themselves forever if I can't find something new..
Surely all you real jedi poisters have a lot better moves than is posted here, and I can only speculate you are keeping all the truely jedi moves under wraps to set yourselves apart from us other would-be jedi spinners.. HELP ME people I need new tricks before I hang up my poi forever!

hey rob, that femur grip you speak of sounds like it has potential.. forgot to ask you to show us it on saturday but I reckon if you launched the poi high in the air after performing the move itd look pretty sweet.. we ought to get together for some poi antics sometime (whilst not under the influence of cabbage)- cause you're poi's looking pretty good now + I haven't found anyone else in Leeds area will similar skills (yet)...we have a lot to learn off each other

keep these sick moves coming,

it never claimed to be!
and notice this thread is nearly a year old now

if you can spin all of the jedi set already then good for you
but remember hyperloops and isolations are not just one move - hyperloops are like a family of moves and isolated spinning is pretty fundamental (i.e. you can take a great many moves and convert them to an isolated version).
give you any ideas?

please don't complain that you've run out of moves though - excluding the 'endless variations of simpler moves' is like saying 'i can do a butterfly so bf waistwraps, bf weave and so on are just variations'.

if you really have no more inspiration for what to do next with your poi i suggest either a new prop or more catches.

i've recently found that there's a fair amount of variations to be had if you play around with three juggling clubs instead...

I think people are kinda missing the point in this Jedi set.

In my opinion - people should not be feeding off this stuff - you should be LIVING it - it is a part of your very essence.

To people who say they can 'do' all of these tricks I have one piece of advice:

I know only ONE MOVE - It lasts for as long as i'm connected with my poi and is a VISUAL INTERPRETATION OF THE SOUND I HEAR.

This Jedi stuff isn't a competion, it's a level of controling ones body beyond that of everyday life. To react to sound faster than an impulse between your brain and body. To realise the poi move only in your Mind.

And YES, there are plenty more moves out there that aren't listed here - This is only the first step - but if you need someone to tell them to you, you are not ready to hear.

There is a great difference between KNOWING and UNDERSTANDING......

Hey Coleman, it's been too long...

Anywho, can someone please tell me why throws are not in the jedi set???

While I was at Samothraki I had plenty of time to practice getting some sick throws tight into my regular spinning.

I've been playing with combining throws / airwraps (hyperloops?) / and under the leg moves. Getting the throws to drop in on the beat, then straight into air wraps and so on.

I've been doing some slick double throws,
e.g.
split time,
spin forwards,
left side of body,
[turn to face poi plane]
right hand throws poi under left arm,
left hand throws poi [to follow other 1 spinning throughthe air],
right hand catch [poi spinning in same direction as when you let go],
left hand catch [as above],
into airwrap - stop both poi on wrists
reverse out of airwarp
REPEAT ad infinitum

Also, with my throws i've been playing with e.g.
outwards butterfly (or 5bt ttn, whatever)
throw right poi behind back,
poi spins across left shoulder to right side front,
catch poi so that it spins inwards,
TOSS IT STRAIGHT BACK where it came from, i.e, from front right side, across left shoulder,
right hand catches 'blind' behind back on left side.

Perhaps not Jedi in their own right but can add plenty of spice to other Jedi moves mensioned here. Especially when dropped in DEAD ON TIME.

Oh, and to everyone i met at Samothraki,

Matt

And another thing

[slightly off topic]

Is JEDI now a recognised religion in the UK, since so many people put it down on their census forms???? I heard it was.

If so, doesn't that mean that we can have religious ceromonies and play our religious music as loud as we like, perhaps all day Sunday. Also I've heard you can get massive council tax cuts if your home is a registered church / religious meeting place.

I think we should start taking advantage of such religious luxuries

just tried that elbow grip thing - I can't really get it to work, but my best effort looked quite insane and reminded me of some contact staffing I saw at poi in the park... the way I was trying it was to spin my right poi backwards, send it right over my shoulder until it hit the inside of my elbow and held it there for one spin and then back into my hand.
I suppose this is contact poi in it's own right, and with a few variations linked in this could be a pretty mad new style you've found
We're off to the liquid connected party down in London next weekend, but stay in touch and we'll hook up sometime after that
