Just recently, one of my wrists started clicking as I spin. I also just got over a bout of teninitis in my wrist...I want to know if anyone else has this problem? It doesn't seem to be harmful, just disturbing.

somebody that takes aikido would be the real person to ask. they do lots of hard wrist work. i'm pretty sure this is what someone that takes it told me... (but if you really want to know for sure, go to an aikido dojo). the clicking will work itself out as you use your wrists more and more. it's just the kinks getting worked out. do gentle wrist stretching movements. the key here is gentle, don't tweak or you will aggravate the area.
i've had lots of tendonitis problems. i'm not sure exactly what tennitis is, if that's a typo then i can certainly give you the lowdown on nutritional therapy for all kinds of tendon problems. there is a tennitis but i though it was an elbow thing(tennis elbow). anyway i'll save the list for whether or not you have tennitis or tendonitis.

as a gymnast of ten years id like to say DONT STRESS! my warmup consist of cracking, clicking and crunching nearly every joint in my body before i feel flexible enough to start training. occasionally i'll get a continous annoying click like yours but if i shake or stretch it hard enough it usually goes, if not, it goes in a week or so. this is probably not the safest or effective method, i'll probably have arthritis when im 25, but oh well.

Arashi, i'll be in Austin in a few months, watch out

I've found I have three distinct kind of bone joints sounds (thanks Mike ) :

A. when I crack teh joints of my fingers etc .. which I beleive is just cracking a little bubble of air in the liquid between two bones. Soo relaxing, probably not too good and end up with twisted bones later ... this one goes "CRACK"

B. When Accidentally I doa bad move and I hear a nasty "schkrrrrruntch"... not good, not good...

C. this "CLICK" sound I get in my wrists and ankles and I can repeat endlessly ... dunno what it is exactly, nothing nasty I suppose and most probably what I think you have..

does this make any sense to you ?

and also i can crack my knuckles one handed, and i can do it continuously, so i dont think its the air thing with that hand, i think my finger joints are just messed up...

oh well, thats all my clicking joints, except for one hip, but that hasnt arisen in a while, and i hope it wont either, it was painful...

okaleedokalee here's what i know i'll post it here cause it's good info for all of us handy types. plus i never wanna type all this again. i'll try to represent the western and eastern medicines both. western first.
as the tendons of your hand/fingers go through your wrist they are moving past a lot of moving parts. they are protected from all this mess by tubes or "sheaths" (that's vagina for you latin buffs) that they pass through. if you flex the back of your hand you can se how your tendons do a dive underground as they approach the wrist. there, all the sheaths are wrapped like a present in a bundle by the thingy that gives you carpal tunnel when it goes out. anyway all those sheaths need a certain amount of lubrication to make things move smoothly. tendonitis is simply an inflammation of the sheaths or the tendons caused by a lack of said lubrication due to overuse of the joint. the tendons rub the inside of the sheaths and it hurts like hell. a western doc will tell you to just stop doing the repetitive motion that caused the problem. gee thanks. problem is every time you move your hand at all you scream in pain.
carpal tunnel and tendonitis will have relatively the same symptoms. they are caused by the same poor diet choices.
eastern docs will say this. each of the organs is described in terms of its elemental energies. they didn't have microscopes to help describe things with so they came up with other ways to classify things. the kidney is the organ in question here. it is the water organ and is in charge of keeping everything wet and happy. the lack of liquid in the sheaths is caused by a kidney imbalance, which has the effect of drying out the body as other organs take precedence. or if there are other problems, the kidney may be imbalanced due to an imbalance in another organ which is then causing the kdney to get thrown off. seeing an acupuncturist at least once so they can read your organ chi levels is very helpful. all they need to do is take your pulse.
eating things which support the kidneys is very effective but it takes a little time and a lot of discipline. even harder is not eating the bad things which caused it. first of all coffee is very verry bad for kidney chi and is usually the main culprit. if you want to get rid of tendonitis that's the main thing to do. other acidic foods like the nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, etc.), citrus fruits, and chocolate are other no nos but fuck i ain't never leaving chocolate. nutella helps.
cool, wet foods like cucumber and cherries are good. the best thing for kidneys, however, is black beans or adzuki beans. eat them every day and you will be surprised. kale (and other leafy greens, the more bitter the better) is good for cleansing kidneys but it is a bit hard on them so go easy. i had tendonitis so bad i couldn't use my wrists for like 6 months. cutting out coffee and eating black beans constantly gave me back the use of them. yerba mate is a superior coffee alternative that has many medicinal properties despite it's moderate level of caffeine. i live on the stuff. it is a sacred and widely social herb in south america. however it still is bad for you and going cold turkey is the only way to get cured. much to my dismay i still can't take capoeira and aikido and gymnastics and udder wrist intensive activities cause i am an unfocused eggplant. hope this helps. tendonitis bites. any questions?

Is tea bad? I've never even seen an adzuki bean in my life...And I try to keep hydrated, but since the weather's been warmer, I KNOW I'm not doing as well as I should.

I live (oops, WORK ) at a sushi restaurant, so I get a lot of soy, which I have heard is good for me.

Basically, I don't know too much about eastern medicine, and I really appreciate the info.

salmon! i forgot, but salmon and other red fish are grrrrrrreat for tendonitis. how nice to work where you do. and yes, anything with caffeine (including tea) is bad. moderation is the key when you are too hooked to give up caffeine completely. caffeine creates what is known as false fire, which burns up the water chi in the body. a healthy chi balance will alow for the same energetic results as caffeine by just being healthy. i used to have much more sustained energy before coffee and college came into my life. ride a bicycle!
drinking lots of water won't help your tendonitis necessarily. it will keep your kidneys healthy, but you need medicine to cure it. drink water straight whenever you drink it, don't flavor it or your kidneys will have to filter out whatever you put in it. oh yeah, cranberries and cran juice are good too. they go in the bitter kidney cleaner section with kale.

Ty, i get exactly the same problem, i turn my wrists or ankles and get a click, i find if i tense my wrist, turning my hand with fingers facing up, then release forward, the click is even louder, both wrists and both ankles. Little less on my ankles tho. It started when i began aikido training, and has not stoped no amount of streching helps. It's just wierd.

i used to do a lot of clicking in my knees and wrists from horseback riding, it got worse a few years ago
doctor said that the repetitive use causes the clicking, it may not hurt now but it most likely will later
hormones can deteriorate the lubrication in your joints too (so he says) so stopped taking those and that helped
one of the things he had me take is glucosimine and chondrotin and calcium complex, and the one that is really supposed to help is a vitamin B complex, exclbut you have to be careful with that because it can give you vivid dreams--i started sleepwalking
it all helped, still click, but had to start with natural vitB, as was mentioned green leafy veggies

hmm arashi has made a great post!!! clap

Only thing for me to add is: There are teas that are more no-no than others, as they draw more liquid from the body than others. I experienced black and green tea to have this effect.

And what I personally advise here (and have to write on top of my very own list) is the proper consumption of water every day!!!

Varies by individual and circumstances (when you are working in an airconditioned/ heated environment, anything with dry air, or the opposite extreme - anything that pulls liquid from your body), but it's believed to a minimum of 3 litres/day... of course the body also extracts the liquid from the food you eat. Some foods are taking more liquid from your system than others (for example rice more than noodles).

I play the drums and my wrists have been really crunchy in the past but it's more or less sorted now. I put it down to omega 3 oil capsules (cod liver or similar) and my powerball . Powerballs are great for anyone with wrist and forearm trouble. They're a way of exercising really gently, with no big movements so there's no strain, but you can feel it really working the muscles. This builds strength without the joint taking a beating. I know a drummer who used to have tendonitis so bad that he couldn't move his hand out of a stick-holding position. He sorted it with cod liver oil and altering the way he played. Drumming transfers quite easil to spinning, so looking at the way you spin is probably a good idea too, making sure you don't strain the joints in 5 beat weaves and such. Stretching's good too; I tried googling for some good wrist stretches but to little avail. Climbing centres are full of advice on this though, so it's worth finding your nearest wall and going in for a word.

Will those capable of telekinesis please raise my hand?

When I went to have my back checked out at the Chiropractors, I also had my wrists looked at because they're able to click and I'm able to touch the underside of my forearm with my fingers ON the same arm/hand... I can probably bring it down further so my palm is almost flat against it, but I dont wanna try that seeing as I was warned not to do it again. wink

Anyway, the chiropractor's advice was to get one of those squash/stress balls, and to try and crush it in your hand repeatedly until you tire of it in order to strengthen the muscles there, he was also saying to try and keep it up. Just have a ball near your computer and whenever you're not doing anything, just pick it up and do the exercise. He said that doing that will probably stop the clicking.

... I havent gotten a stress ball yet to try it on, lol. I can be rather lazy sometimes... o.O

Physical therapists are much better than chiros. Much more school and a better understanding of musculoskeletal problems (since they study more than just the bones- imagine that!)- at least in the USA, don't know about other countries.

Anyways, about wrist clicking- is it painful? Painful clicking is something to be worried about and seek medical advice (REAL medical advice, not a chiro, try a hand specialist in the realm of an orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist.

Non-painful clicking- usually a sign of hypermobility (lots of movement at the joints). Are you a generally flexible person? Usually strengthening will help, like the gyroball. I would also recommend wrist curls (take a light weight and curl your wrist palm up) and reverse wrist curls (same thing, but palm down). Try to balance the strength between your wrist flexors (the non-hairy side of your forearm, usually stronger) and extensors. Hope this helps.

BTW, caffiene does NOT cause tendonitis. Take it from someone who has had and gotten over it.

As a martial artist I'd say cod-liver oil and glucosamine is a great supplement for healthy joints, to be taken daily, it takes a month or two before any effect would be noticed though.

other important thing is lots of anti-oxidants, fruit, green tea, black tea's not as high as green, and putting milk in apparently kills the benefit.

All humans are basically lactose intolerant at some level so don't overdo the milk in general.

lots of fresh fish is always good, it's good for your brain too apparently.

a low gluten diet helps too, less bread, more rice etc.

It's not that I'm advocating Japanese/Chinese diet, it just does actually work very well for staying fit and healthy into a ripe old age smile

I'm also going to go to one of the skater shops and buy a wrist brace. If my wriist doesnt get better by the end of term, I'm seeing an acupuncturist!

EDIT: The best the skate shop could offer me was this HUGE piece of body armour - a monstrosity - i'm going to improvise one with a bandage and a metal ruler - the student way biggrin

So after a month my wrist is better, yay! 3 weeks of wearing a wrist brace (pushing a heavy door without it usually hurt me ...gah I'm a pansy) then 1 week of spinning staff with my wrist-brace securely attatched, it's all paid off.

I wasn't willing to change my diet (I'm abusing my fast metabolism while I can!) either, I did get a powerball gyro thing, it's a cool toy, but I don't know if u sing it helped or not.

Anyhow, from now on I'm going to wear my wrist brace when performing, and I'm going to get a second brace for my other hand as well. It seems I can still do all the moves I could do before, but I can do them without bending my wrists - for example, if I do a snake, or a multi-beat figure-of-8 with my staff, my whole arm twists, instead of just my wrists. Less pretty for performances, but I'd rather not have arthritis by 25!

The brace I got was £13 from boots - pricey! But you can't put a price on your health can you?

But yes, for spinning staff at least, I'd recommend to anyone that they protect your wrists! I was really scared I wouldn't be able to spin again, I'm so happy that I'm ok now! smile
