This space is for all those funksters busy improving their technique by learning new moves - made-up or traditional.

Tell us all about it! We love hearing about our fellow poiers/staffies/misc. toyers succeeding with new things biggrin

It's just hard to keep up with it all sometimes, so if we keep it together you'll be certain to get a little feedback.

here a pat on the back in advance from me

I've been able to do the five beat btb weave--about half the time.
I've also worked out inverted weaves.
And butterfly reels in straightjackets, and a funky weave/reel also crossed.
They're pretty cool.

Yay for learning the weave, Lynobi! weavesmiley

How does an isolated crosser work, Rovo? I've been playing with crossers a bit lately and incorporating them into my weaves.

This week, I have mostly been learning: low wave, some reverse butterfly moves including double backbeats, horizontal weave and a very basic buzzsaw.
Now I need to work out how to shorten and lengthen my chains without stopping. confused

I once learned every move that there was,
Every style, Every technique.
Then I woke up, and forgot it all,
So now I struggle to dream.

I mastered the 3 beat weave last night, it was becoming a bit of a pain in the bum, as it was the one big sticking point in my progress. I took up poi about 2 months ago and I have been practicing like I'm possessed. I spent the last month doing it perfectly one hand at a time and just falling apart when I tried to put it together. I eventually cracked it by practicing crosses and a "2 beat" then throwing in an extra beat.
Oh and I've also recently worked out compound circles, they need a bit of tidying up - see icon wink

Just the other day, I wanted inspiraton so I sat down to watch through Nicks Poi Video... Whilist watching I saw that girl doing a behind the back weave... And I suddenly understood how it should be done. Then the next day I did my first btb 3bt and even 4bt, altho not clean yet so I still hit myself alot.

Thats a grand step for me since I've been doing poi for quite some time but never dared delve into btb stuff before... or really thought I needed somebody to show me how it's done... since I have not been able to figure it out within the time of roughly one year...

YAY!

Cheers

Isn't that video great Mireneye?

I just watched it through last week, then went out and randomly started doing all kinds of things (mostly messing with the planes, crosses etc) that I previously wouldn't have thought of, or would have smacked my nose trying - it was like something unlocked in my brain!

Yea, kash... I watched it several times before, and usually everytime I watch it, I seem to pick up something new just days after watching it.

There's definietly some mysterious force behind that video.

Incredible!

seperated butterfly, moving up and down with pirouettes. i.e low seperated butterfly to high seperated butterfly/ turn 180 degrees/ high sbf to low sbf/turn 180 degrees/ rinse and repeat. The high low movement is sort of like a stall that goes between your arms

I can get through about 3 360 degree turns before I lose my planes and end up in windmill!
NB
by seperated butterfly I mean the move that looks like OO

Have you tried here? Or here? Both are good places to get a few ideas.

Personally the thing that helped me most with 5bt reverse was thinking of it like this - the hand that twists round the other one on one side of your body then pulls both hands back across to the other side.

So, you're in a 3bt rev weave and your poi are on your left hand side. To make it 5bt, your right hand twists round the left hand and then immediately pulls both hands over to your right side. It's as if the right hand/wrist forms a hook and forces the left hand to move across. This move across has to happen fairly quickly or you'll get smacked.

Once on the right hand side, your hands naturally untwist and you simply (?!) repeat the above in a mirror image. And voila! 5bt reverse weave weavesmiley

Watch the video to see what I mean, and good luck smile

I've worked out doing a 3-beat weave with 3 entire beats under the leg. It's mostly just for fun.
I'm also starting to get turns in straightjackets.

Ok, so its a transition from giant windmill to six beat. When your left hand gets to about ninety degrees from left side of body, the other hand comes into it, and does the sixbeat contortionism. Looks very nice while doing a fountain.

There is nothing to be afraid of. Virtual reality will eventually rehabilitate your mind and eventually your body. Everything will be allright, i promise. Just concentrate. Try some music.
