Is it really necessary for people to continue slating this guy now?

Come on, we've already frightened the guy away. shrug

my last comment was intended purely as a joke:

but yeah, I kind of feel for the guy. A little bit. Just remember kids, market research pays off!

TBH I've been keeping an eye on his site and forum just to see how he's getting on, but I fear this guy has really shot himself in the foot financially.

Oh and if you want a bit of a giggle, check the websites of his latest forum members: they're really hilarious!

I was merely trying to give some constructive criticism as to why people have reacted in the way that they have. It was not my intention to 'slate the guy', just to try and explain to him where he is (in my opinion) going wrong...

Quite.

I think it's testament to Jon that as he said, people have applied equally cynical eyes at Hyperlights and he hasn't been slated in any shape or form.
(Though seriously Jon, get on with it wink )

Market research (and well, market knowledge...) are a must when trying to market new props.

These may be an already existing product ( in India ) that's been imported for sale in the west. There's probably a higher investment in labour for marketing these things than there is an investment in cash to develop and package the product. Any guesses as to what these things wholesale for ?

The main problem, as I see it, is the " If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit", marketing ploy.

Yes! I made one suggesting the whole thing was a satire and linking to what must be the worst promotional/spin vids ever made. But it seems one must embed (or whatever the word is) vid links these days cause the post just came up with massess of space instead of a blue linky thing.

But as I look further, it seems that flyingpoiguy has come across one chap in India who does basic moves very fast, with silly equipment, and decided that this is the state of the art that the rest of the world should admire.

A regular poi is just dead weight in the air.

No, a 'regular' poi (eg sock poi) has momentum. Working with that momentum is what gives elegance to spinning, and leads into a whole world of isolations, loops, wraps stalls etc. You can also SEE 'regular poi' rather than the persons hands/body twisting around which is mostly what i see in these vids.

Hyperplanes have different way to be controlled. The handles have some weight so you can throw the whole Hyperplane in the air and it will keep turning, and then catch it again.

Um. Try wibbles. Or any other handle weighted poi. However the weight ratio is still that the head of the poi needs to be heavier than the handles to have a nice movement.

I had a look at the instructional section of the site. (um...) Using a toy aeroplane on a string means that the standard poi tech term 'plane' has to be replaced by the clumsy 'axis circle'. Another leap backwards methinks. Leap in a teacup seeing that poi terms are hardly the stuff that empires fall on, but still. Annoying. Not so much reinventing the wheel as replacing it with a paper plate.

I rather like spinning teddy bears on strings. Winnie the Poi. wink

I agree Bender - Theres a difference between constructive criticism and blatant badgering.
For me its entertaining to read, for the other guy its gonna mean years of counselling!!
I dont think he's gonna post on here again, so dont know wether all you guys 'advice' is really worthwhile now.
Remind me never to ask for constructive criticism here!!
Anyone heard of the sandwich technique + - +
Anyone seen Robert Heart about by the way? or has he crawled away in despair aswell?......Unlikely (OOOoooohhh you BITCH!)

This chap has done the equivalent of going on a bonsai site and asking for people's opinion of a plastic christmas tree.

I doubt that he will need counselling over it, Rob. I think people have been fairly nice, and tried to give reasonable feedback and advice, considering the quality of the product and its promotion. We are after all on a site which tries to do things well. Inhabited by a bunch of folks who take swinging things round on strings rather seriously! ubbloco wink

Ok, has everyone quite had enough fun at the poor mans expense? The consensus seem to think so, so I'm locking this thread.
