We've covered ages, names, how long we've been spinning, injuries and embarrassing moments. I read in one of the threads that Dangerboy is into biology or something which got me wondering...what do you do as a day job????For me, this is my day job. I also am a freelance writer. I own a production company called Creative Illusions, which helsp coordinate different acts, including Pyromorph. I also direct/teach improv theater and write for events.Other than that I have managed a book store, been a bartender at a wild bar and taught first and second grade special ed, none of which is nearly as fulfilling as performing to me (though bartending is close).Oh, and now I can also add that I am the newly inducted Reptile Specialist at a small pet store chain here in the middle of nowhere. It doesn't interfere with the performing and it is another job I love to pieces! And yes, I do know I am one of the lucky ones! tongue ------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir..."I prefer not to go where there is a path but to blaze a new one!"[This message has been edited by Pele (edited 05 January 2002).]

Freelance Japanese translator, something I've been doing since 89. Damn, has it been that long? Yes. Anyhow, it gives me lots of freedom to take a 20 minute break and go in the backyard and twirl, or knock off for 3 hours and go for a bike ride out in the hill country. Or even take a week off and visit friends in the Bay area (don't do that often enough). It's interesting work most of the time, although at the moment I am slogging through a huge Asynchronous Transfer Mode specification, which is not particularly interesting.OK, time for a twirling break.

*Of Course* I spin fire during features! (One of the first things I said to Rowan when we met was "Do you have any idea how much money you could make doing that at my club???") What kind of entertainer would I be if I'd missed that opportunity??? Now I'm trying to figure out how to integrate two of my favorite things: poi and polework[This message has been edited by Jesse (edited 21 March 2001).]

I work full-time at Discovery Cente, a science centre in Halifax, NS. I get to do buskerish science demos and design/build/fix (heavy on the FIX... you wouldn't believe the destructive power of 1000 kids a day wink ) science exhibits. I have access to a workshop here where I can make any kind of fire toys my little mind can come up with. smileI also tutor math and physics (my Physics undergrad degree (focus on force theory and crazy shennanigans) will be finished in April), model for fine arts classes, and, of course, spin fire by night for passers-by.Quite a few writers here, I see. My minor is english. Writing is on the back burner for the moment, but I'd love to start getting my stuff published as soon as I get the time.In fact, these long-ass messages I post (aside from some recent wacky hip-hop and scribbled poetry) are the bulk of my writing of late. Does anybody read these crazy things?Peace, Love, and Fire to all.-Rick[This message has been edited by Rick (edited 21 March 2001).]

I'm working for the planning bureau of the World Games in Akita. My job is mostly translation work, but I also get to visit elementary schools and teach kids and in approx. 10 minutes I get to go sightseeing as "research" for a welcome giude book I am making for foreigners visiting the Games. well look at that, the majority seem to be on the technological side of things or writers.i'm neither, i am currently studying for a degree in outdoor studies, i will do any work at all but have been and will be again an outdoor (or experiencetal) educationalist though am busy contemplating being a dish washer for three weeks to finance a climbing trip to the italian dolomites. i do spend a lot of my life working hard on the circus stuff though, probably a couple of hours a day on unicycle, clubs, balls, fire poi and fire clubs.

Well, were do I start.....this will prolly sound a bit cooler then what it really is....I work in E-Commerce Security, encyption. I basically work in a secure building monitoring machines owned by big paying customers and make sure they are always secure at any time.....and alwayz running....To get into my work I have to pass through retinal scanners and use swip cards.....every door I have to swipe through (gets annoying after a while)We have distress buttons allll round the building. Whenever near actual machines there alwayz has to be 2 ppl and because we are short staffed it sux coz ya alwayz get dragged along just so someone else can do something. I have had to go through a 3 month security clearence to give me a Highly Protected status, they basically go back 10 yrs in my life (which they were prolly seein if I was on detention in primary school, haha), they ring people and everything, just to see if am a good person :P We have no windows, everything is solid mesh walls and ceilings....it's startin to look like a damn space station, haha (the building is only new). The building itself has to go theough intensive accreditations, urgh, and audits, sheeesh, spent 9 hrs answering questions I don't even understand and that was just a basic test one. The paper work is outstanding, you drop a damn pencil in this place and ya have to fill out a log book, haha (maybe a bit of exageration :P)Anywayz, ya's get the drift, tis kinda cool to talk about but really tis kinda boring and sometimes annoying. But all is good.... smileGiZ

Wow... We do things unconventionally on the home of poi dont we! Most people ask this question when they're first introduced to each other!I love the fact that we don't identify ourselves by what we do for a job. I love the fact that most of you are probably only mildly interested in what I do for 38 hours a week. You know, it's like... 'hi, I'm Finn and I'm a firedancer' Not.. I'm Jude and I co-ordinate a recreation program for young people with an intellectual disability.*Ugh!*I mean really! How did that sort of thing start? Since when is something we do for only a small percentage of our time the most defining aspect of our character!Don't get me wrong, I love my job, but the fact that I work with people with disabilities doesn't tell you a hell of a lot about me. Does it! That people make assumptions about me based upon what I do for a living, how much money I earn and the status attached to my profession apalls me.I guess I fall into the category of people who work to live rather than live to work. What about the rest of you?Can you tell I studied leisure management at university! The old work/leisure dichotomy!Love it smileLOL.. um, sometimes I can be kind of intense too! smile [This message has been edited by Finn (edited 23 March 2001).]

Here, here, Finn. It does annoy me when people ask right off the bat "what do you do" and then we launch into a pre-scripted 5-minute conversation. I was out having a beer with a friend once, he engaged the ladies at the next table in conversation, and right off the bat, they ask "what do you do"--he actually launched into a tirade similar to yours, right on the spot. The fact that the fire people down here are not like that is one of the things I like about the crowd. So tell us, Finn--how well do you manage your leisure now that you've taken classes in it?
