Just curious, how do you guys view glowstringing?

couple questions to focus/start off the discussion:

Is glowstringing and poi one and the same or different? If it's different then how do you define glowstringing and seperate the two?

Do glowstringers have a unique set of moves outside of traditional poi moves?

Should the difference in each tool/medium (glowstring vs sock poi vs fire poi) be emphasized? Or should all of them be spun the same way?

How do you define/develop style and originality in poi? Should the same principles of style and originality be applied to glowstringing? Or can glowstringing have their own principles and methodologies?

Are there differences in cultural background and philosophy between poi and glowstringing?

The topic is closed now. It's sitting in the glowstringing/poi section. It's a rather offensive argument started by yours truly in order to get more glowstringers off their lazy non-dancing bums. And UCoF, by 'they' you mean the punks with glowsticks on strings?

Dave....

Another thought I've had is that your poi style (although extremely unique within poi) seems sybiotically related to your meteor 'style' which is a (b) catagory.

Do you find that looking across all genres - from all the (a)s through to all the (d)s - you can explore your *individual* preferences more completely?

Do you think your wide range of 'inspiration sources' has assisted the development of your style?

Jo.

Yes, it helps.

But, on a deeper level the real help is the underlying attitude that I developed well before I even knew poi existed- it came from pushing hard in juggling and achieving a deep and instinctive understanding of the factors that lead to success in learning anything whatsoever.

I come from a background of extreme negativity, my school life and family life taught me that I was inept in most things, in particular anything physical requiring co-ordination or fitness.

What I learnt from years of improving at juggling is that practice is the key, and negative attitude the main hinderance.

Juggling was the first thing I saw myself as being 'good' at something. Additionally, as I always maintained, juggling is a superb discipline for understanding what learning is about- it's hard to learn the basics, and then, it never stops being hard. Progress in juggling is continuous butting up against things that you cannot do (yet).

I found poi to be a breeze, relative to the years of juggling.

Poi is not easy, but IMO, on the whole it involves less of that continuous pushing against things you can't do. Partly this is because you can spend much time in between 'pushing', just letting go, getting into the dance flow and basically 'style' polishing.

And that's great, I've always said that the good thing about spinning, compared to juggling, is that 'style' polishing is within the reach of even fairly new spinners (whereas juggling is so much about technique and 'pushing', that you'll only see a 'dance' from an extremely accomplished juggler).

What I learnt from years of juggling was that my previous assessment of myself as inept, was incorrect. I learnt that, for everyone, commitment will always triumph over any initial lack of co-ordination.

Poi, meteors, distance unicycling, and, in fact, everything; came to me much easier. Many people getting into a skill will be held back primarily by that nagging doubt that they'll never actually learn it; that, despite the fact that they have seen others doing it, that they in some way lack the potential to excell.

Juggling immunised me to that doubt, and IMO that is the main thing that led to my poi/meteor style.

That's the deep answer; in addition, of course, other aspects such as mixing with jugglers/spinners/skilled people in general, direct transference of ideas between the seperate arts etc, etc all help greatly.

Sorry if that's verred off topic, but it's the only way I can answer the question.

Well, if people are interested...

However, well worth having a scoot around and reading other posts to get a better picture of the gs.c community.

Apparently this goes back a lot further than a few months, but these are the most 'meaty' threads on the topic I've been involved in since seeing the site.

I don't paint a pretty picture of myself btw... eek

But NYC draws a masterpiece of himself a few times... smile hug

nice post Dave thanks for that - I'm still don't think you've answered which type of 'catagory' you think glowstringing would be?

Let's reflect on the fact that this thread is on HOP.

HOP is a well moderated (both by actual moderators and the actual members). There's far less 'flame' threads than in years gone by, and, when they rarely do happen, they get sorted. It's not just the mods; we're a mature established community who, through experience have seen that pulling together beats mindless arguing.

Certainly there's many, many forums on the net that, to me, are a bit of a joke- basically kids trying to boost their egos by provoking and engaging in hostility.

Now I'm not saying glowsticking.com is anything like that, but I do get the impression that perhaps the threads on this subject over there, have got a bit heated.

It doesn't have to be that way here (and, if it is, then the thread will likely be pulled and everyones hard work go down the drain).

It's a clean start.

I'm not sure that all this 'hiding behind desks' and 'Oh, no, not again...' type comments are that useful in ensuring that this doesn't degenerate.

Let's start positively?

edit - nice post Dave thanks for that. I'm still very interested about which 'catagory' you think glowstringing comes under?

I'm still thinking about that one Jo; i'm not even sure that I can meaningfully pick one, but I will ponder it.

yeah but we actually have to discuss it rather than have an aside on how we discuss things here dave!

i'd prefer an all out brawl with some honest on-topic opinions in it to a thread filled with polite sidestepping and procrastination (not saying that that is what you are doing, but i have seen it happen a *lot* on hop).

what do you think about the parallel of comparing sport juggling to artistic juggling?

both take an equal amount of time to achieve (~10 years?) and are under the same general term ('juggling') but are so stylistically different that a practitiner of one cannot do anything like the other, even though they are (to the world at large) 'the same thing'.

do you think this could be applied to fire poi and glowstringing or do you feel there are other more fundamental distinctions?

Just that I disagree with gs.c owner 'CynicDave's impression that videos from glowstringers would be binned and not considered because HOP hates non-poi.

Don't say so on gs.c though or your post will be deleted and you could -even- be banned. You have been warned.

And Jo, CoL? I would feel strange and out of place submitting a glowstick video to HoP. See my post in the CoL forum.

I have never seen a CoL, nor have I seen much "techy spinning" outside of HoP. I'm just a humble 18 year old kid that enjoys dancing and trying to learn what he can and give back what little he has.

If I watched a CoL you'll see a bit of everyone's spinning consolidated quickly into my repetoire.
