And then you can point it at cold sweets (at least one kind we get in Germany), and when they burn they turn into dark brown sausage-like shapes and keep growing.

you can't use paraffin for the nice colours because it's non-polar, so the polar salts and acids won't dissolve in it. But methylated spirits give you nice colours.
(be careful with the boric acid though, it's been found to have testicular toxicity in rats, so you don't want to play with it too much)
