*** disclaimer-type-thing ***

I do not recommend this design to anyone - it is provided as inspiration and as an idea to develope. As you can see from the other pics on the page, THESE TOYS ARE NOT SAFE. Don't even think about trying a similar design unless you are very experienced.

The wick got destroyed after about 2 burns, so now we have a bit of rope secured around the outside of the cage. The wick lasts a lot longer that way, and you get less of a molten metal build up. Also, the cage came off after a while and is now wired on rather than electrical-taped on (should have known that would happen... )

If any of you ignore my advice at the top of this post and make something like these, then please gimme some feedback about how it goes and any design alterations that worked.

Here's a vid of them in action:

I was wondering if u forgot to add the steel wool?? Or will it just burn the metal cylinders and they act like the wool? And if so what type of cylinders are they??? And YES i know they are black bush but what type and ... Cage>?

Oh yea what disclamer was that, i didn't see one.

Its all just smoke and mirrors

I should have mentioned earlier, but this design will only work with Single Malts. I cannot condone the purchase of any other whiskeys.

Looks like a cool design, easy to reload with steel wool etc, etc and I suppose it would give you a more fountainy effect out of the bottom, not sure tho I'll have to make some and see I suppose.

Why?

These were the 3rd design I tried, and the reason I wasn't happy with the previous 2 designs was the utter lack of burn time (15 secs at the most)

These have a great burn time (between 45 secs and 1 min generally)

Any other beneficial effects are coincidental but, to be honest, there doesn't seem to be any advantages other than the burn time.

Just curious, is centrifugal force enough to push the wool?

And would some steel mesh between the wick and the tube keep those big molten lumps from coming through?

I'm going straight to hell.
Better practice my fire show.

Just been doing some reasearch with Black Bush type poi, points I've noted so far include;

1. The wicking doesn't seem to be essential at the bottom of the can, the wool burns fine without it.

2. You need A LOT of room to do this safely make sure that the neighbours are away and you try it out just after its been raining (everything nice and wet )

3. It is essential that the cage is positioned some distance from the lower opening of the can, this allows the hot burning wool to peel away from the unburnt section. This also prevents the wire wool from clogging the outlet.

4. Yep, centrifugal force is more than enough to push down the wool, the inside of the cans are pretty slick.

5. Steel mesh at can opening = bad idea. Instant cloggage occured, with a white hot lump of molten steel inside the tube (didn't I feel safe! )
This may work however if the mesh is off-set from the tube mouth as with the wire cage.

Sparkly fun!!!

Nice one, Squarefish.

What's the best burn time you've got?
Do you ever have one going out early, leaving unburnt steel wool? - That happens to mine sometimes.

The problem with early extinguishing of the steel wool seems to rely on how tighly its's packed; too tight and it goes out, like any other fuel it needs oxygen to burn (except thermite, lets not go there!)

an idea ive been working on is a cage built in layers, but the only issue i keep getting is that it takes about 5-10 min to "reload" the cages w\ more wool
another design ive been using holds around 10 pads of wool in each cage, but the issue of the wool compacting on itself is really becoming a mad pain in the ass, pretty good show though........ive been getting a burn time of almost a minute of solid streaming sparks...working on making it to 5 min or so...any new designs or ideas ill def. post because this has been an issue of mine for quite some time
oooh and anybody that has a pic of these black bush poi things should get it to me, i could probably improve the design and get back to you w\ me modifications ubbloco

right then guys seriously now, a little bit of research is needed. if this magnesuim is safe im going to do it. if its not safe im not but if it is then i will. but if its not then i wont.

yes??

or

no??

my theory is that the cages spinning will force all the sparks magnesuim etc out of the bottom going in a harmless arc away from me as does the red hot metal of the molten wire wool.

or will it mould into a huge ball of molten metal with the magnesuim inside which then ignites and expodes spraying huge amounts of molten metal into my face.

i could do with finding out before i do it.

im going to do my own research but as they say two headsa re better than one

dont understand whenever i do sparks they always compact in on themselves and its the g force forcing its way through forcing the metal to sqeeze out of the bottom that causes the sparks.

it also causes big molten lumps. are you sparking differntley to me.??

if so how.?

magnesium wont explode...not the way your thinking at least, thats a combustion reaction......only when you mix mg with the proper chemicals will it to that

but magnesium i think is the hottest burning metal out there w\ temperatures higher than the temp of the sun (ie LOOK IT UP!!)

on the topic of my cages i use .....erm....methinks its called chikenwire

either way its very strong (hard as hell and time consuming to shape properly), its of a metal that conducts heat very very well so when im spinning the metal doesnt melt, i use 0 guage (sp?) and 00 guage steel wool in combinations, and the cages have a crosswork so that the wool gets airated and throws the sparks

remember to get the sparking effect you need oxygen to fuel the heat...(any sort of combustion needs 3 things....air, fuel, and heat)

either way if you get a few pads of 0000 guage steel wool and connect a 6v battery to it

youll see it start to glow, and burn, now blow on the wool and it gets much brighter...also means that its getting hotter, the brighter it is the faster it burns, and the less amount of sparks thrown off

ex.

just an example...this was before i got the design perfected..bout half the size of what i do now.......if i can figure out the time element then ill def post me findings.............so yeas......

IF THE IMAGE DOESNT WORK SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW TO DO THE DAMN THING PROPER!!!!!

umm

I think these black bush poi are extreeme versions of wire cages as you can *really* pack in the wire wool tightly into the whiskey tubes.

Jo and Liams Black Bush Poi design was a very extreme form of cage poi; a mistake while using them could be very, very dangerous.

Due to the large amounts of wire wool used and the heat from long burns, they tended to throw off largish chuncks of molten steel.

Jo put pictures of a nasty scar that resulted from using them, luckily it was on his chest, but still harsh.

Although dangerous and requiring a lot of prep for each burn, the results were exceptional- after much development they were getting minute-long burns of the best sparky poi I've seen.

Shame the old pictures and video's aren't available though.

Kat, I think you should respect sparkly poi of any type as by far the most dangerous type of poi. You must respect them a lot, but even so you will still get burnt. Always be extremely careful and always wear goggles - no matter how good, confident, or brave you are.
