Okay...so I was mentioning this poem to Flash Fire and told her I would send a copy to her, but then I thought that this is such an amazing poem that is should go on the bb for all the phenominal women here to read as well. So while I this is me giving it to Flash Fire, I truly feel every woman should read this. And if you read it out loud to others, with conviction, it is capable of giving people goosebumps...which is really incredible. smile
I hope you enjoy it.

PHENOMENAL WOMAN
by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies
I'm not cute or built to suit a model's fashion size
But when I start to tell them
They think I'm telling lies.
I say
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips
The stride of my steps
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please
And to a man
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees
Then they swarm around me
A hive of honey bees.
I say
It's the fire in my eyes
And the flash of my teeth
The swing of my waist
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say
It's in the arch of my back
The sun of my smile
The ride of my breasts
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say
It's in the click of my heels
The bend of my hair
The palm of my hand
The need for my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Well, since we all know a phenomenal woman, I am sure, it isn't so ironic!
I am glad that the men on here are enjoying it as well! wink

Nice to see someone else "collects" quotables.

I started in 1992. If I found a poem, a song lyric, a statement, anything that moved me, touched me or really made me think, I wrote it down. I have a few books of these now. When I go back and look at some of them, I think "Wow, what did I see in that?" and others I understand now in a whole different way. It is neat.

Not all of them have been positive and uplifting in nature either, but I feel I have become wiser for them, and I *really* enjoy sharing them (ask Kombi Guy. I prolly made his eyes cross, lol)

Maya Angelou has many spaces in my little books. I've had the pleasure of seeing, well, feeling too, her speak a couple times now and it always washes over me. She is truly amazing.

hug to you too Mags!

Cheers!

I've got a few books filled with poems and quotes too! I'm so glad I'm not the only one, I was beginning to think I was strange! One of my favorite poems was written by my friend, when we were 16 and a bit messed up. She writes beautiful, slightly morbid poems. It hasn't been published, but I'm sure she won't mind me sharing this one with you...

Cry On Me (My Friend)

Intensely turning
inside out,
failing, falling,
filled with doubt;
Why can't your thoughts be clear?
Wasted, wasting
fragile form,
need someone there
to keep you warm
Can't bear to let them in too near.
Reach beyond this
twisted haze,
frenzied hate,
left in a daze,
Open up the skies grey shield;
let it's warmth flow through you.
Feel it seep into your bones
that strength you're so damn scared of.
Turn it out,
let tears explode,
watering the stubborn soil within you.
Hold close, keep safe
those tiny seeds of self
starving for air.
Pain will crush you,
but you live.
Words will drown,
but the sea will smooth into calm,
and you will breathe,
and you will step
further
than this.
Let us, let me
brush your tears
away.
