I've been Spinning fire for about 6 months now, but soon enough I'm starting work on a version of Beauty and the Beast the musical. For the show, part of what I have to do is design Lumiere's hands. On the broadway and national touring version, these have a little butane torches inside that burn about one ounce of butane per hand per show. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of a place or way to make a butane torch that would fit these purposes. It needs to be relatively small, and has to light on its own from a switch or button inside the "hand". I've searched the boards for something that could be of help, so if I overlooked something I apologize. Thanks in advance for the help! biggrin

You might want to consider looking into Fickle fire have a look at this site https://www.daytonamagic.com/Fire%20Magic/F07.htm
essentially they're small metal containers with cotton / kevlar, usually ignited using a flint wheel, and is extinguished with a small folding door that closes the oxygen off, there is a fairly long thread in 'other toys' under fire painting , that looks at fakir and fire trails etc

Well we could help you out more if we know how big you wanted the flames on his hand? and how long do they need to burn for? And will it be moving and jumping around? or stationary?
These things matter when you're dealing with fire wink

They need to be about 3-5 inches tall I suppose, not very thick. They need to burn off and on throughout the whole show, turned on in short bursts. From what I've read the broadway version used about 1 ounce of butane per show. The Flame isnt actually on his hand either, perhaps a picture would better help explain what I mean. smile

I know it's hard to see, but I'll add another if i find a better picture. Basically I need to create a device to fit inside the glove, seen at the top left corner of the picture. Hope that helps a little, and thanks for your help and patience with me. biggrin

Ok, to point out the obvious, things you'd need:
Electric ignition,
Butane Storage device,
Valve regulator thingy (makes sure the butane is released at a steady rate, and the fire doesn't travel down into your piping),
some pipe or tubes.
It shouldn't be to hard to make your self, and it'd be alot cheaper to.
It's just going to be something like a large butane torch (similar to the small lighter sized ones you can buy at corner stores) from my understanding, so it shouldn't be to hard to make.

check out a few chef websites - they often use butane torches to light ovens and hobs and for caramelising the sugar on top of creme brulee smile

here's one i found earlier.

is that the kind of thing you were after or do you need a yellow flame?

smile haha thanks for all the help guys! I'm gonna go ahead and try and make one, being careful as always. The Chef ones probably wouldnt work without some modding, and it needs to be a candle like flame. Haha again, thanks for the help, its much appreciated. biggrin
