I love using big words and really impressing people (well, make me feel like I'm impressong them anyway) however reading through the dictionary is a real bore (trust me, I've done it). I always seem to find the page with all the most uninteresting words on it.

What I thought was people could post up big/long/interesting words with a definition and we could all expand our vobaularys and become pretentious farts and strut around with our noses in the air while using stupidly long and complicated words.

B.T.W. This would probably help us spot other HOPers in the general public.

The word of the day from dictionary.com is pretty good.
today's word is:

perfunctory \pur-FUNGK-tuh-ree\, adjective:
1. Done merely to carry out a duty; performed mechanically or routinely.
2. Lacking interest, care, or enthusiasm; indifferent.

The best thing is that you can sign up for the word of the day to be emailed to you, for those of us (like me) who are too lazy to look stuff up every day

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I'm just going to add "obstreperous" because i use it all the time (mostly to describe myself) and no one knows what it means. It's sort of like stubborn and pig-headed to the third degree. I have all these wonderful examples of it in my house...

We have a similar word in English:

Antidisestablishmentarianism

It means: opposition to the withdrawal of state support or recognition from an established church

i think it is the longest word in the dictionary. But.... I could be wrong!!

P.S Cassandra: Just wanted to say hello. I'm a friend of Smokybowl Dave. I look forward to meeting u when u come to London, as I've heard LOTS of good things about you!! Vive La France!!

Another word that I like a lot is "Lacertiform".

It describes something that is shaped like a lizard!! I don't know many things apart from lizards that are shaped like lizards but if you find one, you can describe it as being lacertiform!!!

WOW, loads of impressive words for me to play with. This is so cool but I do feel as though it has been carried out in a slightly perfunctory manner, I personally think it is most obstreperous not to be better about the whole thing. [skip the next two because they're just impossible without starting a whole new thread] Do not worry though, I don't hold it against you, I know that because of your lacertiform appearance people are often cruel to you and this is bound to couse a certain amount of bitterness.Besides, how could I stay angry at such callipigious people for long? So with no more procrastination I hereby sentence myself to 20mins mastication on a rubber apple before painting a pretty picture of it.

I always thought "dangling participle" sounded really dirty, that had me rolling on the floor in seventh grade english class, but I also used to smoke a lot of pot back then.

Can't think of any clever big words off of the top of my head, so don't feel too bad Cantus. I must be losing my perspicacity...............

I liked the first one that had the pronounciation written out, because it actuallyhad an accent to me! That made me laugh.

I like the word quintessential, it means the absolute, the peak, the ultimate...in brief.

I like the word lackadaisical, though I have no clue how to spell it, it means to be lazy, essentially.

And the fun one to say....Onomonopia, again I am sure my spelling sucks. A word which is spelled as it sounds such as "ribbit", "woof", "bawk" and "meow"...at least according to my professor!

Isn't that onomatopoeia, Pele?

The formation or use of words such as buzz or murmur that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to.

Taztastic , thanks

Arashi, Thank you for bringing up that word... Callipygous ...
I love that word. It is often used to describe the venus sculptures from Prehistorical times... It refers to large "hips" and all indeed. But here is what I like about it (not only because I am ... damn callipygous myself ) :
etymologically speaking it comes from
kale = BEAUTIFUL and
Puge = Bottom, butt

gotta love those greeks

I personnaly *love* all the japanese words based on sounds AND repeated twice for example :
Butsu butsu = bubbles

Can't get enough of those

And besides... Cantus paints pretty pictures

(I think If you say that sentence cvery fast, it will sound very cool )

shine on
