Has anyone tried to bring a staff on an airplane (non-breakdown variety)?? Carry on? (heh) or stuff it in a tube and send it underneath? (or does it get smooshed under someone's luggage?)
What about smells of fuel residues? Im only traveling across the US, not international...I might just ship it UPS instead,

Just had a friend fly from Australia to Canada with his sticks. Had to be in checked luggage, not carry on. The airline told him that there couldnt be any fuel residue on the toys. He put fresh wicks on and they all got through no problem apparently.

I travelled through europe on various planes without any problems. I just let the burn out properly on their own the night before and then wrapped them in plastic bin bags and taped them up properly. Then just checked them in. Nobody batted an eye and it was a big bundle os fire attributes. I guess as long as it looks clean and dos'nt stink of lamp oil. All staffs made it through safely and undamaged. Mind you I guess they might be alittle more strict in America. Certainly from what I've been reading there are some daft laws about glowsticks in clubs and fire in public places. I guess more or less the same rules apply for UPS pakagaes as for airport luggage anyway. Safe journey and happy flying.

Never had any problems getting my saffs on the plane. Checked in mind you , not carry on.
I always carry them in a special bag so the people at the airline can´t see what they are and if asked I always reply that they are "performance batons".
Never, ever mention the word "fire" since that can get them nervous and you into trouble. It have happened to a few friends of mine.

had to leave staffs at coolongatta airport in australia. be warned, they smell residue tehy aint lettin it on the plane, staffs were wickless but they said if it has been burnt before there can be residue so it cant be let on.

This is an interesting thread. I was going to take my staff to Greece last summer, didn't burn it for a few days in order for it to dry (though the wicks were burnt and still smelled of paraffin), wrapped the ends in bin-bag material with sellotape but bottled out because I didn't want to have it confiscated.
The bag idea is good though..

I would seriosly doubt they would Let you carry a stik in your hand luggage, camera tri-pod bags are good, or if carrying lots of stix the zip up golf bag rocks, cheak quarintine laws about carrying wood, I once had a set of stix confiscated in australia cause I made them in indonesia. clean wicks are good but impractical if jet-seting so my advice go secret squiral and disguise them as some thing a airport person wouldn't look twice at. Funniest airport moment. In Tasmania and the lady at the check in asked if my stix where in danger of exploding! Then called a security officer to personally escort my stix to the plane?

I travelled from Aust to Heathrow and then back again with a long staff and a short staff with chains and shit, the long staff went underneith the short one witht he chains and shit came on with me but the took them when i borded and gave them back when i got off. As for residue, i used mive everynight for a month at the Edinburgh fringe fest and then took them straight on, no bags, no cleaning, not even wiping them down and i had no problems. i have a firend who took juggling battons on with him and they had no probs either so pop a pill and just chill

I put them in my jean case (a bag I have yet to patent! vid of it coming!) and all they told me to do was to take it to oversize luggage. The woman there was fairly grumpy and asked what the smell was coming from the case, I said it was paraffin and she just looked at me, grunted, raised an eyebrow, said she hated the smell of anything petroly (if thats a word?) and passed them through!

If you put model helicopter blades on your staff, either side of the grip mind you. Then you went into a palm spin and
tossed it up it would stay up
for a really long time once you got the blades whirling. as a more increased risk of hand loss but what's life without DANGER.

From travelling the world here is my input on carrying fire toys. Always read the DO NOT BRING ON AIRPLANE guidelines. Nowehere does it say anything that remotely describes what fire toys are. SO they do not need to know. Dont bring it on your carryon baggage. Thats just recipe for disaster. Dont tell them neither... why.... because of fear. If they dont know what it is they will have fear and say no. I got searched and they found my fire stuff. They did not care about the bong, two chillums, three pipes and the smokless toker I had.... they cared about the fire toy. They called the FAA and I was told that they laughed at the customs people and told them it was ok. So.... its ok.... not carryon and itll be fine.

I'm flying with Virgin to Canberra on Monday 10th Jan, coming back to Brizzy 23rd, a couple of days before Moonfest. I'm going to check with the airline tomorrow, but my concern is this:
What if I get to Canberra with no dramas, and I check beforehand that it's fine to bring my staff back with me but I get some difficult staff on the way back to Bris who won't let me bring them back? I'm terrified of arriving back a day before moonfest with no toys! Has anyone had this happen before? If you say "But I was told it would be okay on the return flight" does that count at all, or is it really up to who is there on the day?

I heard the Canberra airport is VERY strict on security....so going into Canberra won't be the problem but coming out will be.
As long as the wicks aren't burnt there shouldn't be a problem....if they have residue on them though you will have hassles especially with the tightened security.

Yeah i figure had it not been for past international indescrepincies, i.e sept 11, they wouldnt even be fazed, well maybe it being a object that can be dangerous but obviously security has been tightened, i put my staff in a pvc pipe case and put it in secured baggage, as long as you dont try and hide it im sure it will be fine

sureau i don't think you will get any trouble with your fire toys just try get all the smell off it don't mention fire and if asked there performaince batons i have used canberra airport several times and haven't had any trouble but with qantas hope this helps

I have had equipment taken by airport security in the past. Just poi heads and I had extra kevlar so it worked out ok. But it was definately an interesting scene trying to explain to the airport security in hemasillo mexico, in spanglish, what they where used for... luckily someone came over and was kind enough to translate for us. Since then I have been really sketchy about fire toys and commercial airlines.

I've been lucky the last few months. I just had them wrapped tight and covered with socks then tied to a backpack. No problems. Six times in the last three months.....but this is Alaska and no one really cares up here.

It's probably a good idea to wash as much fuel residue as possible off of it beforehand, but people check strange sports equipment all the time so no one even bats an eyelid when I hand my garbage-bagged staff to the luggage people.

I am leaving for South Africa from USA. So i took a shower with my poi (anyone else tried it?).I cleaned them and then put them in the tumble dryer (anyone else tried it?) I figured if they can withstand fire and bullets they can handle a dry spin cycle :P. Wish me luch, i hope i dont lose my toys!Ill keep you posted.

I have my staffs in their staff bag, and at the top where they stick out I have tripple wrapped a black bin bag round them and stuck it together with sticky tape.
This should be fine I think.

Im taking firestaffs that are wrapped much the same as yours by the sounds of it........... although im also taking 2 tech stafs which can no longer be recognised as they now are absolutley coverd in bubblewrap!.....what great stuff that is
