Right this will be a challenge. I'm sure people somewhere in time caame up with this but i will put it up cos i have never seen it on a thread.

Isolated pendulums.

if you pick up one poi and just swing it like a pendulum in front of you, making sure the string is always tense (ie. dont swing it too high)

Now when the poi is going left lightly but quickly move your hand about 6-10 inches to your right. Do this again when the poi is swinging to your right and move your hand to the left. If you do this correctly you will have a certain amount of control over the size of the swing and when you want it to stop, which way you want it to go etc.

Now try doing it wth two at the same time (best, i think, to try this with them in front of you swinging towards you then away at first) Once you can establish a certain amount of control your body is your oyster.

I like these cos once you get the hang of them you can make your poi 'tick' to any beat really well.

And here's a starter trick for anyone still reading and understanding.

Hold your poi deadweight in front of you with one handstrap held up at eye level. Now with the other poi put your hand level with the poi head of the higher one.
Now start ticking them but try to tick the higher poi hread and your lower hand in syncronisation.

Fingers crossed it will look like you have an invisible bond between the poi head and your hand, and is really trippy.

I'm just starting to do them and grabbing and releasing the string so the poi 'ticks' around erraticly but always in time with a beat.

Well i hope it is something new or different for someone out there cos i like them and they were really hard to explain.
if anyone don't get it say and i'll try again .

twas briefly mentioned at the end of the first post here ('shopping bags') but was then taken quite spectacularly off-topic and subsequently well hidden with a dodgy thread name.

'taking the weight off' moves with pendula can create some really nice looking stuff.

i love the one above the other idea

Very nice with double staff.

and spoons.

WARNING Isolated Pendula (aka SpinnerCrack) are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE and can seriously damage your shopping.

it's when you start trying it with your arms while walking around town, that's when you really should start thinking about going to S.C.A.R group (Spinner Crack Anonomous Rehabilitaters, for those who dont know) The next meeting is at the bus stop just in front of you see?....be there next week, bout seven alright for you?

Hey no way!
I was trying them the other day...it was bloody hard to get them looking in-line...i found small beats was easier...
... then tried to put my lower arm in the way of the higher poi so it made mini pendulums...
which would work nicely with 3 beat weave stuff I reckon...

ok, so I've got a problem in terms of working out a description of a move, it's just bugging me. I have been spinning a mostly isolated corkscrew pattern with both hands. The poi head crosses over the top and underneath the opposite hand, but at no point does the poi head spin above the hand that is spinning it.
Hope this makes sense to someone..

lazy, it doesn't matter about the poi head - in fact, its extremely hard to get them to spin above the hand if you are in horizontal planes due to that gravity stuff... wink

as long as the poi change from spinning in a plane below the hand to spinning in a plane above the hand at some point (i.e. two planes with opposite poles), you can do all your normal weave-type moves.

in the horizontal, these planes are more accurately described by the surfaces of cones:

isolating cones describes weirdly shaped objects but the crossover theory doesn't change.

as long as your hand switches to above and below the point of the cone, you are doing weave based moves.

dude, thanks for clearing things up. Again. wink
so I'm guessing that's a semi isolated corkscrew.
So my next question is (and maybe I should post this in the 'deconstructionist approach via pendulums' [think that's right] thread)
Is a pendulum only those moves where the poi move between different points in one plane, or can it describe a movement which operates in two or more planes:
i.e a conical pendulum

(and yes I realise that all poi moves are 3 dimensional, I'm just simplyfying terms as much as I can)
