i has a brand new toy biggrin

a scythe is the thing that the grim reaper has with the curved blade. my one has wicking instead of a blade. funnily enough, it still cuts grass despite not having any sharp edge ....

making the thing wasn't easy. i had to have the handle specifically made by an engineer mate of mine because i just couldn't find one of the old farm tools that had a metal handle. looks really impressive tho smile gets me gigs in it's own right smile

hehehehe smile

i just want to know how many of these things there are in the world. i have heard rumour that there are two others, both in the northern hemisphere, but haven't come across any proof for or against it.

i know very well that there are no others in this city (melbourne) and that the only other people with wierd toys (i also have meteorites and orbs) are also professionals .. but i want to know HOW unique this thing is smile

I has one! I just bought a real scythe and kevlarified the blade. Spinning it is like a cross between a staff andx a hula hoop, so much damn fun.

I've 'made' several of these (scythe's) for 'professional' uk performers, along with a number of bespoke exotic fire props,

wooktastic - is the handle made of wood? i'd be worried about it burning thru and the kevlar going flying. never a good thing while on stage.

marco - wonderful! i have heard rumours about you and it is nice to know they're true smile how many have you made and are they used often?

fake teeth - have used one myself to cut long grass up at my family's property in the bush. whipper-snippers were just not good enough smile

dizzyphoenix - if you care to read the rest of my post, i actually make reference to other people with wierd toys.

Bender is one. he goes to edinburgh gardens the same as i do, as well as the Angel Circus. He does wonderful things with a 3-section staff, as well as fans, as well as doubles, as well as poi, as well as acrobalance etc etc etc (i bet he's blushing, or laughing, or both .. he does them a lot)

and it's not the only wierd toy i has either, i own meteorites, orbs, a meteor, fans, clubs as well as my staffs, tho wierdly i don't own any poi. i make custom toys. i fabricate ideas. i have made several wierd toys for other people, and everyone i know who has wierd toys gets paid gigs every so often, even if it's only once a year.

dunno. melbourne's twirling community ain't that big

The main handle is made of metal (i think steel, hard to tell because it's powder coated) and the two little handles are made of wood.

Are you talking about the straight handled scythe or the traditional curvy handled scythe, mines curvy handled.

ah but you also say that they are profesionals (or at least semi pro) and I am anything but.

2 paid gigs in nearly 7 years and both of them fell into my lap by accident. but i digress

I have a meteor/rope dart and fire fans, which are more of the uncommon variety of toys.

A scythe or a trident would be rather nifty though, though if I were to have one or the other i would probably incorporate that into staged fighting. twirling a trident/spear on its own is bound to get comments like 'ooh its just a staff with one end lit!' tongue

my thingy is one of the curvey ones. tis why my mate made it for me and not me. i don't have the tools to bend a tube without warping it, and 45mm steel pipe?

it's looking really intimidating at the moment .. koz it lives outside in the porchway it's gone all rusty except for the places where i hold it while umm posing and twirling .. i just love the theatrics this thing allows smile

oh .. and on that ju-juitsu poster .. i want the little hand sickle on a chain .. i know how to use one of them ... >:)

I also need to get pictures. Friend of mine looks like Neil Gaiman's Death, I really want to teach her to use a scythe just for the pure cheese value.
