And even more latest videos:

1) Advanced Beat Theory and Reel Turns: Explores different ways you can count the rhythm and beat of the poi, and how to apply that to specific moves and to dance in general. A great tutorial if you're the self-teaching type.

2) How to Make Meteors: A quick tutorial on making poi-style meteors with foam balls and colecord.

3) Getting Started with Double-Staffs: Explores some ways to get your double-staffing off to a good start. Definitely just the tip of a big iceberg but sometimes that's all you need.

Love and light from Bali,

Nick

Latest Videos:

1. Eat Drew's Book!

2. Backwards 5-Beat Weave and BTB 5-Beat Weave

3. Interview Questions from Poland Part 1

Enjoy!

------------------

And just when you thought things couldn't get any better, I bring you (yes!) more videos!:

1) The Atomic Weave: Enter the World of 3D spinning. Andy first showed this to me at the Poi Studio years ago, and yes, people have taken this idea all kinds of places since, but this is a good way to start.

2) The Mighty Banyan: Banyan is one of my favorite fire spinners ever, and I mention him in "The Beautiful Thing about Ashes." This is some great double staff spinning from Thailand and India.

We're really rolling now that we have a computer again. Stay tuned for at least one new video every week, yay!

n

-----------------------

...and less then a week later, I bring you Nick and Yuta: Poi Story! This is the Director's Cut of our COL entry, 6.5 minutes long, meaning it has the full "story line" and most of our choreography, yay!

------------------

Ok, now it's Feb 11th, 2008 as I post this. Latest video is More Fun with Flowtoys, using some great footage from a very fun night of shooting in Bali. A good example of some plane bending and 3d poi spinning. Enjoy!

--------------------

Ah, I´m afraid I´ve been too busy for posting. We´ve put up a whole bunch of new tutorial videos: Including Spiral Wraps, Planes and Orbing, a cute compilation of the workshops in Prague, Crossers, Isolations, a most Excellent Flow Toys video, and another flowers video, yay. You can find them all on playpoi.com/videos. Ooooh... it wasn´t easy to do all this though. Sometimes I wish I wasn´t quite such a silly person...

--------------

Breaking News: We've begun to put up a whole series of adventure-tutorials, filmed as Jocelyn and I travel around the world. Already 4 videos up. This is why I never have time for the discussion forums

Behind the Back Weave

Under the Legs

Super-Duper-Uber-Loops

5-Beat Weaves

------------------

Yes, it's true: Nick Strips for Money

-------------

Latest before that:

Show Your Poi! I get regular emails through my site from people who want to know more about what kind of poi to use. Usually people who aren't lucky enough to have other people to play with... and since we had such a nice crew in Thailand, I figured it would be sweet if we all whipped it out for a little show and tell.

The Beautiful thing about Ashes. I'm getting a bit experimental with this one, and a bit personal as well

NICK VS YUTA! A tale of honor, envy, friendship, and jugglers turned poi spinners. With martial arts and bad dubbing to boot!

For Previous videos, see visit the videos page on playpoi.com

-----------------

Note: this will henceforwards and forevermore be my poi video thread on HOP, unless I decide otherwise.

I am proud to say that I have been a busy (too busy) Canadian Beaver and I'm sitting on an awful lot of video footage, which I'm finally beginning to release now that we are launching the new playpoi.com. Videoes will be mostly in quicktime format (Quicktime 7.0) and on youtube and google video as well.

So, to start it off, I bring you When Circles Dream

This is the most ambitious video I have yet made. It features original music by my friend Tarun Nayar, and a lot of video, photos, and performance from a shwack of artists.

...and as some self promotion, you can get a high-res version of this on my DVD, The Scales of Poi, available right here at homeofpoi!!

Um... so there you go. I'll be posting more videos every week or two, so stay tuned.

Poifully,

nick

Oh, oh, and I've put nickwithfire back up. Didn't really realize it wasn't up. The good news is that when I went to put it back up I discovered I had a higher res version. Too bad I don't have anything higher res for Dervishly Yers...

Bummer, nickwithfire2.wmv isn't working, but I have a copy of it (low res I think), so I'm happy smile. It was definitely one of my all time favs.. One of the first poi vids I found and one of the largest inspirations, along with dervishly, Yuta's vids, and FNF vids.

It's always a bummer to hear about your clash with the States frown. I have a friend here in Eugene, Sandra (also goes by Samara), that knows you (was going to help out with your website at one point I believe) and we talk of plans to smuggle you across the border biggrin. I'm ecstatic that you've got new content out there and I can't thank you enough for the inspirations you offer!!

Peace, blessings, and gratitude,

Nick, thank you very much for the tutorial! That is really helpful, exactly the kind of thing that works well with my brain (laying out pieces and possibilities to combine later).

Are tutorials like this on the new DVD as well? I'm very behind in my poi skills..heh

Cheers,

Shawn

Edit: Just saw the thread for the DVD, where it says it's like this but multiple angles. Cool, I'll have to pick it up..

I mean, I.... shlskdffmkdjdf.

I've really gotta upgrade my computer skills sometimes.

Has anybody managed to watch it? What about right clicking and downloading it?

Bender: I appreciate the offer... do you mean server mirroring? If so I don't think I need it. I share a dedicated server in Canada, which gives me a terrabite/month or so, and it'll take a while to start maxing that out. smile

I posted this last night on the original thread and then found that the thread moved. (a little while ago apparently) anyways I wanted to share my praise of the video and this little story.
***I've only been doing this for about 4 months now and when I got my copy of this scales dvd I was really impressed by the good vibes & enthusiasum. Hell somepeople are rather protective of there techneques.
I remember when I was at the rainbow gathering this year (which is where I was first exposed to this wonderful art) There was this one spinner there that completely astounded me with this this move he did where it looked like the poi (there were 3 wicks on the chain) were literally passing through his arms. imagine the move threading the needle only instead of moving your hand down to avoid your forearm it was like it passed right through.(and no I was not on anysort of hallucinagen at least not at that point in time) anyways it amazed me and everyone else that watched as well. I find him the next day to ask him about this strange move, When I asked him about it he looked at me and laughed. ( I had asked him to show me again during the day ) he then proceeded to tell me that "a magician never reveals his secrets" or some rubbish like that...

truly a gem of a DVD. Much respect bro, hope to see more.***

Latest video: Traditional Maori Poi with Migoto

Oh, it feels so good to be getting old projects done!!! We filmed this in New Zealand last March, but I've only got around to editing it now. I had to almost entirely edit myself out, as I was so sleep deprived I looked just awful. It's too bad, as Dan looked so happy and colorful, and there I was, looking like a corpose with constipation behind him. :P

...but Migoto is the star anyway. She was great. This gives you a real peek into Maori Poi.

Migoto is a Japanese name, by the way, and she had a Japanese father but she was raised in a Maori village speaking Maori, and is very much Maori at heart.

Swoosh!

...Man, you should have seen all the stuff I had to edit out. It was painful to watch. There are a few scenes where I looked like I was going to fall over. I had to come up with some interesting editing tricks, and a couple times I've spliced the audio so Migoto can finish a sentence without the video cutting to me. Too bad, because Dan looked so colorful and happpy smile

...but yes, I'm glad I'm getting back to all these dreams... and I'm seeing now what I learned and gained and how I grew over the past couple years... though I still think I took ten years off my life wink

A couple more very funny videos on the way. One of them is (shhhhhh.... don't tell anyone) nick vs yuta... but it's all on DV tape and I don't have a miniDVD camera so I have to wait to borrow one.

The other funny video that I'll be releasing soon most definitely does NOT include me stripping for money, in a desperate and pitiful attempt to engage in some online "busking." I would never, ever stoop to such things.

Yeah, I was really happy with this one. I want to keep producing more plot based videos. If things go well I'll keep bumping it up. Eventually I think I could get a grant from the Canada Arts Council, and then we could really do something special. ubbrollsmile
