I was thinking, is there anything in your past that you see as a missed opportunity? Something you still kick yourself for not doing, saying..whatever? Not necessarily regret (although regrets are welcome here), just every now and then have a wishful thought about?

I need to go and ponder this one.

Everyday something happens that, in hingsight, I could have done differently, maybe better. But I see them as lessons, not regrets. Anything you look back at and kick yourself for is a regret, and regret rots away at you. It's all a positive lesson, even the stuff I decided to do or not do which I know know was bad. It did happen and the result of all these actions is me.

That said I do have one big regret at the moment, but it's too much to go into. I think about it everyday and kick myself. You can probably guess it's relationship based! But even that I learn from and hopefully won't make the same mistake again.

oooohhhh.... all the time. i'm always doing stuff i regret, or regret not doing stuff, but at the end of the day, how on earth are we going to go through life in a perfect way? No matter how right u think a decision is, it is in human nature to question whether u were right to make that judgement. This will invariably lead to u thinking of something that u could have done given more time say.

I figure that u cant dwell upon such incidents, as more often than not "whats done is done"

wow thats 2 quite random posts... i do appologise for my obtuse ramblings!!

I've got loads of little regrets that just slightly annoy me - mainly stuff I've not done, or done in a way that doesn't make any sense with 20/20 hindsight.
They're things that I've done that I get reminded of and think 'Why the hell did I (not) do that?', like forgetting to get a friend's phone number when I left Uni, or missing out on a chance to tell people how I really feel.

I realise that there's nothing I can do about them now though, so I don't let them get to me too much, but if I pushed them out of my head completely, I'd not be able to learn from them, right? I think it's good to have a few mistakes in your past to remind you to do things differently.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I've lived my life with a lot of little regrets, that I punished myself for quite regularly, the good old "why didn't I?"s. However the one big thing that I thought I would regret, that went against all my principles of professionalism, I don't.

About 3-4 months ago I walked away from a job, just didn't go back. There was a lot of reasons in it, which some of you will probably know. It is the last thing I would ever dream of doing, so the decision to do it was extreme. It was the thing I thought I would regret most, to not behave in a professional manner, to lose that opportunity, but I haven't regretted it once.

It was a day for screaming at inanimate objects.

What this calls for is a special mix of psychology and extreme violence...

The beautiful Beth Orton once sang something like: Regrets are lessons waiting to be learnt.

And I can't remember who said: It is better to regret something you've done than something you didn't do.

Rozi, maybe you don't regret that because personally, for yourself and the grand scheme of life it was the right thing to. The most painful regrets are those based around love, I feel everything else isn't as important. Just a thought.

I know it was not your point, but that sounds quite dangerous to me. A rapist may regret the act but that is something you should not do. Also a wannabe rapist might regret not having the guts to do it. Now which do you think is better?

Anyway just pointing out the flaws of that saying 'cause I am feeling in a pedantic mood today. I apologise in advance!!!

Regret is part of being alive.

There have been many times I turned left when I should have turned right.
Other times when I didn't make the most out of a certain situation.

The toughest for me are those things where I felt that I didn't make the most of myself. That is, I didn't use my potential in a given area and so wasted it.

Human potential is THE most precious resource and I hate seeing it wasted.

All of these things have helped shape me into the man I am today. Hopefully I won't make those same mistakes again....better to make new mistakes, just for variety.

Very true so now we have to change that saying to include the whole thing. Therefore should read thus!!!!!

"It is better to regret something you've done than something you didn't do. ALSO do what thou wilt, but harm none."

Now that is a better saying to quote next time it becomes appropriate.

'Happiness is liking peeing on yourself. Everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.'

'If *I* had a hammer, there'd be no more folk singers.'

My friend and I were talking about this recently.
Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the road less travelled by. Its hard to regret the decisions I have made as if I had not, then there are many people I would never have met through the course of my life. My friend spent two years doing a masters after a 4 year degree and now feels like those 2 years have been as waste and wants to go back to study and change careers. She regrets having studied the masters, but if she hadn't she would never have met her fiancee.

Saying that I am kicking myself now that I did not take reporter job offered to me by NHK in Japan and now am stuck in a job I have no interest in just cause the job market is so dire at the moment.

However if I had taken that job and stayed a while longer in Japan I would never have had the opportunity to attend the Dalai Lama's teachings in Dharmsala.

Come faeries, take me out of this dull world, for I would ride with you upon the wind and dance upon the mountains like a flame.

Hmmm.... I've actually been thinking about this kind of stuff a lot lately and have a tendency to revisit it over and over. One side of my family is Jewish and the other is Catholic, so guilt and regret are never far whenever I have to deal with them.

Personally, I think that regret is a way of cheating yourself out of making the most of the opportunities you have now. You will never see what's in front of you if you are always looking behind.

I've done a lot of things in my life I could be regretful of - especially a certain ex-boyfriend of mine but we won't go into that. Sure, there are things I wish had done (like seeing my grandfather when I was in LA because I don't know if I'll see him again ) and things I wish I'd done differently (like killing certain people that really, really suck), but that's neither here nor there. Life is for the living as much as its for the learning. Hope you all have beautiful days today.

Beauty is the conscious sum of all our perversions.-Salvador DaliHope without action is hopeless.

regret is saying to yourself "if I was in the same siutation again, I'd act differently."

well, you only say that because you have the perspective that time give you...20/20 hindsight as TBM says. if you could *actually* go back and be in the *exact* same situation again, you'd do exactly the same thing you did before.

you have reasons for what you do. if the consequences don't turn out as you expected, don't think your reasoning was invalid...you'd make the same desicion over and over again if you had the chance to try again. just focus on the future, trust your reasoning, make the best of whatever may happen, and be happy.
