This came out of a conversation I was having with another HoPper.
Do peole here spin for social reasons - i.e. to meet people, to go to places/events, to intereact/teach with others
or for selfish reasons - they love doing it, they love self-improving and (possibly) the ego-inflation it creates?
Just to clarify - I don't mean "selfish" in a negative way - perhaps "self-motivated" would be better, nor do I mean ego-inflating in a bad way - just that warm feeling you get when you know you're good (or at least getting better) at something?
Is there a difference? Do they go hand-in-hand? Is there a right and wrong reason to spin? (No
)

sadly my social circles have a very controlled hierachy ....and any act persued outside of shopping, guys, anorexia, shopping, the piss taking of the less socially gifted, and shopping is inconceivably wrong.......so i don't do it to make myself look in anyway better coz i know most just take the piss anyway! i also don't do it to meet new people....... i do it simply for the enjoyment.........i spose it also helps me escape because it's hard to think of anything else when doing it.......

Ultimately, I spin for myself. When I first got into spinning, it was a personal challenge to see if I could do it at all.
As I began picking up tricks, I watched one of the first Houston Spinners with awe and set a goal for myself to become as good as he was and is. He's still one of the most graceful spinners I know...his transitions are very fluid and his "dance" moves are incredibly graceful. I still strive to be *that* good. I'm a perfectionist, for the most part, so when I try something new, I practice until I get it perfect.
I learned that things aren't perfect in spinning, and that's ok. It helped me relax, and, as I became more fluid in my own transitions and moves, I began to spin to help center....it became my form of meditation. It still helps me unwind.
There is definitely a social aspect to spinning as well, though. I don't do it to meet people, or wow people...not intentionally. I have a group of friends here in Houston that I met because of spinning. A friend introduced me to "these crazy folks who play with fire" because she thought I'd fit right in. Those crazy folks became a part of my extended family.
I do have to admit to an enjoyment of performing...something that really took me by surprise. I wasn't a performer before spinning, and was quite shy (still am in some regards). Spinning helped me find a bit of self confidence...performing aided in that as well.
What I get out of spinning, and my reasons for spinning, though, are my own. Different people do it for different reasons. For me, there is a personal and social aspect to spinning, but at the end of the day, I spin for myself. I get joy out of spinning, and it helps me unwind from the daily grind. When it stops being fun is the day I'll step away....I hope, though, that day never comes.

I think I must be lucky to have never met a spinner who span to impress others rather than for themselves. Not that I've met many others but they've all been nice folk.
I admit it feels nice when I'm spinning outside somewhere in the summer and another spinner turns up who can't do something I can and they wanna learn from me. It's very flattering but the enjoyment of that comes from sharing my knowledge of tips, hints, full moves etc not simply "donating it to a needy cause". And 9 times out of 10 even if they're pants they still know something you don't so the cycle continues v.nicely
Meeting new folks because of spinning is great too, the community aspect of poi is wonderful if you are lucky enough to be able to involve yourself in it, such as this lovely place and the merry funksters who attend these hallowed pages.
Apart from that (
) and foremost to it all I spin for myself, there's nothing better than nailing something new, especially if I've discovered it myself and perfecting it in my living room when nobody's in

I quibble with this; while I can see the reasoning, and once would have said the same, I feel that, even though someones ultimate motive behind such a donation is that it fits with their agenda/way of seeing the world, there is still a big distinction between them and the person who spends it on stuff purely for themselves.
This, however, I like a lot-
and I can say that, if I were the last person on Earth, I would most definitly spin, juggle etc etc; so I guess that makes me a self-orientated spinner.
I would also take full advantage of the empty roads and motorways on my big wheel unicycle

As for performing? I like it because it adds an element of pressure to your spinning, I believe you have to be able to hit your moves 100% if you are going to do them in front of a crowd - something that just isnt there at local spin meets. There is also a bunch of other stuff you need to consider when performing which you dont if you are spinning on your own.

i don't reckon i'd still be doing poi after two years if i hadn't had spinning events to go to that were full of lovely people.
and i don't reckon i'd still be doing poi if everyone else that did it was mean and horrible.
but if i was purely socially motivated, then i could go to spinny meets and just socialise rather than spinning. But on occasions where i've tried to do that, i've always given in to the urge to spin
i'm self-motivated to spin for the pure joy of 'zoning out' with my stix or sox, and also for the sense of achievement gained from improving my abilities.
i'd still love to bounce around with poi if i were the last person on earth. But i don't think that i'd be so motivated to learn stuff anymore.
it wouldn't be nearly as fulfilling if there wasn't anyone around to go up to and say:
"ooh! ooh! look at this! look at this! oh. bugger
well, it was working a minute ago..."
it can be difficult to be proud of your achievements if there's no benchmark to measure yourself against.
so in conclusion... erm, what was the question again?

I started spinning for the challenge of trying something new, and am still spinning for that reason. When I'm watching a truely spectacular display I Think "Wow, how does s/he do that?" Rather than "I'll never be that good, I'm giving up." It's not always been like that with many other things I've attempted.
If there's a gathering going on near me then I go to see if anyone has moves I don't know how to do. When you've got a burn going on with lots of people spinning fire together, there's an amazing heat generated in more ways than one. It's great to be part of it.
Or at least it was until kerosene started giving me contact dermatitus.

Me, i spin cos its a fun way to meet people, relax, is an awesome party trick, esp. when you start firespinning, and it gets you fit and improves all sorts of things.
So, in a sense, i dont spin selflessly, but im not entirely self motivated, either.

no silly...Katinca and I started spinning on our own, and started a spin meet and then met all the lovely people! Anyone who was around in Adelaide(my home town ) 4 years ago would tell you that it was a pretty lonely place for twirlers. There was no option but to twirl for the internal benefits.

The ideal is the combination.I am doing it for me because I like it and I like other people to watch because they smile
When I play, I think a lot, i imagine things,i see and i hear the fire.It is both the most complicated and simple feeling I can feel so far.When people watch it is a kind of performance so there is a little presure... but when people clap their hands in the rythm of the music and smile,makes me very strong.There is a kind of communication between us.And it makes the feeling go stronger.It is like my thoughts by that time are all acceptable by those people.

i dont' think u can seperate them...i think that yes, you do it for the social thing and the chance of meeting people you might actually become friends with...but you wouldn't do it if you didn't enjoy spinning...

I'm quite happy to watch other talented spinners, but i don't actively seek them out... unless i've run out of new trickes!

I first heard of it when me and my mate where in her back yard last year with her dog and she had been taught a basic weave. So an hour later i had picked it up. I loved it found if very easy to do and was egar to do more. I have always enjoyed dance and the motion it creates reminded me of dance. I then cam on this site to get new moves. I have never met another spinnert in person apart from in cornwall but they all seemed to do it to 'be the best'. I hated this competition,.
Since i have been doing it to get beter myself. I always wanted to be able to do somthing i enjoy and love really well. Plus i think it looks amazing seeing others do it.
Since coming on here it has shown me more people who do it and i can be amazed at differnt people being so good at it. Im really looking forward to Reading festival where i plan to meet people and spin together. Never ever used fire though just my weird lil made spinners lol.

I love the social side of twirling
...and what an icebreaker to be able to ask a complete stranger a question about a move or fuel etc.... instant common ground between twirler & twirler, or twirler & spectator....I don't often wander up and talk to random people except at occasions where i'm playing with fire - People who love to play with/watch fire in my opinion are some of the nicest people i've met in a long time - You do get some attitude & ego involved, but on the whole everyone is generally lovely and the atmosphere relaxed at fire events.

Since there isn't another spinner that i know of within the least an hour from where i live, I have to spin for myself and by myself. This doesn't bother me though. I spin as a kind of stess relief and for the satisfaction of figuring out new moves. I guess i spin socially a little because I like to show people what poi is and entertain them.
