Lots of useful threads about hyperloops\airwraps\knots\tangles\nexuseses\randy badgers.

Please post random rubbish in this thread to keep it bumped biggrin

Read These First

Airwraps and Hyperloops

A funky article by Dom, introducing and explaining the terms airwrap and hyperloop.

Includes this important observation:
Written by: "Dom"

"The word "hyperloop" was first used on this board by Glass in October 2002. Since then there has been constant debate about what a hyperloop actually is. Ultimately a hyperloop is part of the airwrap family of moves and it doesn't actually matter what it is or what it's called as long as you're having fun."

[Old link]

an excellent 'how-to' guide for the most basic tangling move from Professor Coleman. The thread that started me hitting my poi together on purpose.

[Old link]

This thread is basically what got all the techie people into Hyperloops and Isolations. Here you can verify that this stuff is all Glass’ fault spank

It's massive and has lots of interesting stuff (if you skim past the occasional bout of arguments/accusations)

Butterfly Threads

[Old link]

Dom & Dantana explain the whole tangly butterfly thingy

[Old link]

Dantana, Coleman, Poibox and Nix? explain the whole tangly butterfly thingy

[Old link]

includes MORE useful stuff about butterfly thingies from Dr Dantana. He knows his thingies he does…

[Old link]

Starts off describing recoil-wrapping one-poi from a butterfly tangle. Goes into more general butterfly tangly advice.

Buzzsaw Threads

[Old link]

In fact… it’s a tangled buzzsaw smile

[Old link]

OK thread, but not enormously informative or helpful.

[Old link]

advice on how to keep buzzsaw tangles going. Good stuff.

[Old link]

Oli explains stuff about adding and removing twists from tangly buzzsaws (with nice diagrams smile )

[Old link]

not particularly informative or helpful

Helpful Theoretical Type Threads

[Old link]

More than what it says in the title. Messed up tangly conversations.

[Old link]

i reckon this is a very useful thread for advancing your understanding of tangles in general.

[Old link]

The effects of rotating hands contrary to spin direction. Reducing the amount of time you spend untangled.

[Old link]

Horizontal tangly stuff and a bit of general chatter. Definitely worth checking out.

Wierd Moves n Stuff…

[Old link]

Three awesome new tangly moves (with video) from the Reverend Rev

[Old link]

another great thread by le chat bleu with many funky ideas to play with…

[Old link]

Good description of and advice about… between the legs airwraps

[Old link]

(but... aren't all hyperloops atomic? confused)

[Old link]

Groovy idea from Tommy Nixford. Needs long poi.

[Old link]

Stuff about how to get lots of beats in airwraps

[Old link]

Stuff about how to get lots of beats in airwraps. again...

[Old link]

stuff about tangling poi then stalling them...

[Old link]

"...like some freaky astrojack/meteor mutant monster!"

[Old link]

Horizontal tangled throws from Dr Dantana

[Old link]

“you can put bouncy balls in socks then go tangle tangle bounce bounce tangle bounce.”

That’s about the size of it. It’s a short thread smile

Other Useful Bits

[Old link]

General advice about learning. Very useful.

[Old link]

Argh! Terminology debate! Mummy, i’m scared...

[Old link]

sometimes hyperloops make you sad PART ONE!

[Old link]

sometimes hyperloops make you sad PART TWO! ubbcrying

Only included for the sake of completeness

[Old link]

Given it's useful sounding title, this thread is quite shockingly pointless ubblol

[Old link]

Some stuff about turning with hyperloops. Not enormously useful.

[Old link]

Some random stuff – ball chain, 3 beat corkscrews, teabags and cone-shaped gravity…

[Old link]

Mainly descends into terminology confusion frown

[Old link]

simple question? About hyperloops? ubblolubblolubblolubblol

[Old link]

oh god, don’t mention fountains, you’ll only upset cole…

nice post on tribe though (except the little calling-people-silly-names-competition), at least it confirmed my suspicions about some people's discussion-skills... I'm quite tempted to keep following the debate though I think it might be best to leave it alone, doesn't look like it's gonna get productive anytime soon!
But thanks so much for reviving that thread!! I should've durbsed for it, but it seems I'm lucky biggrin

can we make "to durbse" a new verb, or is it one already? I've never met Durbs, but durbsing sounds cool to me.

does anyone know when the first video recording of airwrap/hyperloop appeared on HoP? if so, which video was it?

Unfortunately, HoP doesn't rush to vid everytime something comes out. Kids in London have been hyperlooping for years before I ever saw it on video.

I'd bet you could find some threads from way before the first video was posted.

I know that Glass and them were doin' it back in the day. And those guys are vampires when it comes to showing up on film. biggrin

well, i was a late starter with poi (first picked them up around 2002) but for what its worth, the first time i personally heard of a 'hyperloop' was here.

i first saw a hyperloop on a video called 'drew & stick' (produced and performed by glass from this board - it was a stick video and only had two poi moves in it!).

my friend jonnny worked out how to do them from that video and subsequently taught me smile

i can't remember where i first saw airwraps but i definitely learnt what was termed a 'hyperloop' before i learnt general airwrap theory.

i discovered a lot of what i know about tangles for myself (misunderstanding of a maxi plus led me to buzzsaw hyperloops and beyond) and from discussions here (hug2 glass hug2 arashi hug2 dantana).

i don't think anyone here would ever claim to have been the first to do this type of move though - possession or orignation are not what dom's quote is about.

I'd assume not.

If you want to know what Glass was on about at the time, you could always ask him.

Glass was the first guy to talk hyperloop theory to me back in the day, but I was very late on the scene.

Not sure where this is going.... keep in mind there was a HoP board before this one too... but I think if you asked some of the old timers directly, they'd tell you.

Or perhaps dodge the question with a series of lovable smiley faces.

That's when Glass showed me isolations and some wacky butterfly variants... which I just now figured out. biggrin

you won't have missed anything wes.

most of the talk on hop regarding airwraps/hyperloops was started in a thread called 'the jedi set'.

if you read that and then search from hyperloop/airwrap threads from that date onwards, you should see the learning progression that the spinners posting here on hop went through.

the video thread i referenced and that you were asking about can be found here.

hope that helps,

I find it a bit funny how how up in the air the tangler origins are.

I could have sworn that when the hyperloop stuff first started happening on HoP (I was more active in the boards then) that I'd already seen yo-yo people doing it. I'll try and see if I can dig up when the yo-yo players started to do it, but I think there's some confusion on who did it first and/or whether they learned it from somewhere else.

One person I was just talking to thinks that Kazuyuiki Sugimatsu may have been the first yo-yo person to start doing it around 2000. He's going to e-mail Kazu and ask him if he learned it from somewhere/one in particular.

A different yo-yo player says he's pretty sure he saw it being done by a poi person before 2000, possibly at a US juggling convention (oh what irony that would be..heh).

There might not be any way to really track the exact roots of it at this point. Not that it matters much in the end, though it is kind of nice to know for historical purposes.

Fascinating Fact

Chief Sitting Bull was originally named "Jumping Badger."

Among some American Indian tribes, it was customary to give newborn males temporary names. The names were changed later, as the boys developed character and showed courage in manhood.

If the chinese made them up thousands of years ago and locked them away in the shaolin sock drawer does that mean my spork is smaller? and does load capacity effect the killing properties of abovementioned eating utensil/disembowlment apparatus? will we ever know?
