What aspects of fire staff construction are important to look for when buying one?

There seem to be quite a few different designs and I'd like to make the right choice.

Having a staff that breaks down into parts for travelling makes alot of sense to me.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi Raphael,

This thread here from the staff forum

(https://www.homeofpoi.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t=000143 [if this link doesn't work it's the bottom thread on the staff forum])

is a good link into all good threads on making staffs. It also gives pointers on what to look for in choosing your staff; length is important, as is having a staff that can travel easily. Mine doesn't!

To be honest the best staff for you to buy is right here in the HOP shop, the 3 part staff which you can break down and adjust to different lengths.

Hope this helps, pm if you need more info...

ok

nice gripgood balance(if you want collapsable) good tight conections so it doesn't wobbleI personally have the
quote:
concentrate inner core fire staff
which is very nice.
apparently the

quote:
leopard
is also very tasty especially as its telescopic.

Garbo, i cannot know until i handle a leopard staff, but generally telescopic staves aren't as secure as screwed in staves. click-on connections are strong enough for vacuum cleaner tube extensions, but will it handle the stresses of being twirled? To be confident of the strength of one's firetoy has a very real impact on one's twirling. it's only common sense.

raph, it's Callum's 'innercore' 3 piece breakdown staff. you can even see the 'concentrate' logo on the staff. i have have tried many staves, and this staff is head and shoulders the most professional staff i have ever twirled. 'nuff said! made in melbourne, baby!

I personally prefer to make my own, it is easy and totally customisable. Most that are on sale that I have seen have been really crappy!!!!

I have a quick question for you innercore/concentrate staff users.... I bought one off this site, and I love it, with one exception. One side of the staff seems to come loose after a couple of drops or a few contact rolls (without hitting the ground). My question is this... can I tighten the staff by mechanical means? Pliers will marr the aluminum, but I have this rubber strap type tool that will adjust to fit any diameter of tube and won't scratch. My worries are if I get it too tight, will the aluminum bend, or otherwise exacerbate the problem??

Weighting is tricky. The weight of the shaft and the weight of the wicking will really change how your staff feels. My staff is wood, 52" long, with 3" x 36" wicking rolls at each end. I'd say it's on the heavy side--my wrists really took a beating when I was learning on it. I've made similar staffs with 3" x 24" wicking, and they feel surprisingly light (but maybe I've just been conditioned).

Wow. I'm suprised people are recommending so many things.

I would say that it all comes down to personal preference.

I had to design and build my own staff because no one carried what I wanted. Most of the people I know are really pretty spicific about what they look for in a staff, and I have never heard a concensus on one uberstaff.

So I would suggest play with all of your friend's staffs, and spin everything that looks like a staff untill you figure out exactly what you want, then find someone who sells it or build your own.

Jesus helps me trick people.
