Alright, so everyone I am certain knows of the tshirt competition, and that the proceeds are to go to an international gathering of spinners in NZ.What I was thinking is that it might be easiest for us to create this like a convention. Rent a venue with insurance for the three days. Have stages where people can spin and showcase. Have vendors with items available for sale or display. Have a general gathering area, etc. This way the cost can be defrayed by sponsorship, it will be easier to get airlines to discount tickets and hotels to discount rooms. Then on Saturday night we can have some honking big free spin ala Burning Man and such. I was thinking that since there is so many of these little BM things sprouting up all over that this might be a fun and different direction to go. We can also retire the relay equipment that weekend, and maybe kick off a new project?I know there are enough businesses that would be interested, what about everyone else? Would many of you be interested in attending anyway? Or is this ganna be small and intimate with us dieharders?Anyway, that is my .02 on the thing. Other ideas would be great! Also needed would be any NZ-ers interested in helping plan the thing when the time comes? And when should we start with this stuff anyway?Oh...and I was thinking November of 2003 since it is turning to sumer down under. Any other dates which might be more suitable? If need be I can start an egroup about this.....Thanks for any ideas and input!------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com

Never been to NZ but always wanted to go, so that'd give me a good excuse. Downside is that NZ is probably the least convenient location for the greatest number of people, therefore likely to draw fewer people than if it were anywhere else. This is not a slam on NZ, just an observation of geography and population distributions.I wonder if anyone might have some land they'd be willing to offer up for a camp-out? I'm not a big camper-outer, but it might be simpler, logistically.

There was a large push to have it in NZ because of it being the HoP base and someone said because of it being the "home of poi" in historical terms as well. After that, whichever country it is held in I am fine with (thinking US or UK for 2005). I owuld love to get some Maori group to come in and perform too. I think that would be amazing!!!!Camping is a good siggestion. Much fun for all but I think carrying the gear that far would be a pain in me arse! I also have no problems splitting rooms with people (I have met) either. It will be figured out. Which is why I started this brainstorming thing now!!! grinBesides, a two week vacation and exploration will be nice and much needed by then! wink------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com

Thanks Robert...can you email me with your email addy so's we can speak please?Purple Girl has suggested that Novemebr is not a good month as the weather is unpredicatable and to aim for later, but with the Holidays being in Dec and Jan most people are tapped for cash and weary of travel so....*sigh* does anyone then have any issues with very early February 2004? Or Maybe October 2003? You NZ-ers need to confer upon this and let me know which month is best. I now many of us want this, well, yesterday but 2 to 2 1/2 years give us a good chance to plan properly and the rest of us a chance to save...as well as the relay a chance to make it around. Maybe we can take a poll or something Malcolm? Right now I would have to say my vote is for the very first weekend in February 2004. Next.....------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com

I'm up for it I should be swimming in cash by then. And who knows how far along in my twirling I'll be by then. Also Pele you know if it's in NZ we are gonna have to charter a boat to take us to some kick ass Scuba spots. Far to far away to know if I'll be able to go BUT I'll be the first to push for Summer (Normal people summer, y'know July/Aug, not crazy southern hemisphere summer whenever-the-heck that is wink). Most people (like me) will be more able to travel then, no? I know I wouldn't have a CHANCE of flying out for a random weekend in Feb.1 man, 1 vote.

I have to start saving and get my shit together. I think it would be sick to meet everyone who showed up. This a dream as of now and I hope I can get everything together to make it a reality for myself. I haven't been outside the U.S. since I left Okinawa when I was 10. Other then a couple trips to mexico which isn't shit since it's like 45 min away. If I were to go, I think name tags with HOP user names and real names would be in order. Maybe a HOP meeting place. Awesome, I hope I can save enough money. We'll see.Eric

Hey people,YAY ! I am so very much looking forward to this event ever since I first heard about it. I am for NZ even though it is not easiest but, hey , it would be like doing a cheese convention anywhere else than France winkYes, planning well in advance is definitely a MUST cause for us Europeans it is a trip to the exact other side if the planet actually and I still don't know of prices and all, but I am saving money for sure cause there is no way I can miss this event. When ? I fully understand Mr Mo's opinion which is probably shared by many people on this board too (I think summer vacation are easiest). However, a venue with freezing cold weather is not what I consider the nicest thing to do... As for waiting until 2004 ... my head says "ok, if we have too" but my heart is really shouting of dispear ...Where ? Please take travelers in consideration. And help us with a place that is easy to reach without having to rent a car... Camping for sure has to be a possibility. And also the possibility of shower AND of covered place for spinning in case of (temporary) rain .Pele, the idea of performance of traditional poi sounds really GREAT smileSince we want it as a convention, it'd be great to have some workshops open to anyone with some of you more experienced people teaching us by toy (staff workshop, poi, meteor, club swinging...) or by technique (like BTB workshop or I don't know). Hope it will be opened to other formw of juggling as well cause it would be great to share.About fire ... there will be a need of fuel for sure. I don't exactly know how it works in the BM. i think people come with their fuel ? or can one buy it from the BM ??Yeah, I know these sound like details (but Myst came up with the name tag issue already so ... wink ) And organizing event is my job so I can't really control all these thoughts popping up in my head smileI am no New zealander, but if there is any way I can help, I'd be more than happy...Just can't wait to spin with all of you beautiful people.I'm all "boing boing boing" jumping everywhere with a huge smile on my face !Shine oncassandra[This message has been edited by cassandra (edited 24 August 2001).]

Let me think about it for a min.........Damn right! Bring it on!!Camping, group flight bookings, sponsors, workshops, has to be NZ for the 1st, all sounds good.Having a rough idea how beautiful NZ is, is there anywhere viable that gives a nice mix of open land, forest/jungle and on the coast for the beach? Also a lot depends on numbers, I know at least one non HoP member that'd be up for it.Sounds like everyone's got quality ideas, get it all together, and it'll be the fantastic poi fest.I'll happily help in anyway I can. Plus 2003/4 gives all us newbies plenty of time to practice, practice, practice.Book it and they will come!! M:-)~

Marlboro...your wishes will come true...NZ has heaps of places for camping next to the beach...and the mountains are never too far away....Having recently visited, I had some photos developed from when I went to Piha and Lion rock...really beautiful, near Auckland...Also...The Corromandel...totally gobsmackingly beautiful...not to even mention the west coast of the South island....(I could mention so many more but it will have to wait, I wouldn't want any of you fine New Zealanders thinking I was leaving your spot out)Maybe Auckland would be a good idea...all the major flights come in here and there is never a beach too far away.....and you can pick up a set of wheels from Central Backpackers for about $500 if not less......but camping is definatly the way forward...... shockedAnnie

Another vote for NZ here.Went over in Feb of this year, and I can tell anyone in the North, that's a glorious time of year. As for going during northern summer, well, check the news about the storms they've been having there - it's midwinter and they're in the middle of the pacific ocean. Not ideal for outdoor activities. Plus there's a lot to be said for having two summers a year, on opposite sides of the planet! And another note for the northern contingent - the 'inconvenience' factor. I figured 24 hours on a 747 would be a real killer. Well, it's not nice, but it's not as bad as it sounds, by a long way. Just take a good book and lots of tapes for the walkman. Finally, related to the above, expense. Due respect and everything, but the NZ economy is a bucket case at the moment, and might still be in 2003. Which means for those of us from countries with a strong currency, we get a lot of NZ dollars to play with, and an NZ dollar certainly gets you a lot more than, say, a UK pound in England. As for the flight, I thought it would cost an absolute bomb. But if you book the flight a couple of months in advance you can get some pretty good deals. It's a very fabulous place, and this would be a good excuse to go again :-)mikeyB

wow.... i'm stunned at all the attention this thread is getting.. it's wonderful to have so many people actually interested in this brilliant idea!it's especially fascinating because we're JUST at the very beginnings now... imagine how much planning / organising we've got to do over the next couple of years !!how are we going to decide on location / venue ? will it be a poll ? i think auckland is the best city in NZ to have it, just because it's sort of a central 'landing place' ..february will definitely be a lot warmer / friendlier than november - be prepared for humidity though smile we don't get ridiculously high temperatures, but the air is often sticky warm D: !mikeyb is right about our flailing dollar. it's so pathetic at the moment that if you come over here you're going to feel rich, i presume.. who knows what state it will be in by 2004 though.i wonder if this is going to receive any media attention ? freaky !

NZ is the logical place for all the reasons already mentioned but I think somewhere on the South Island would be the best place by far - I know that will offend Aucklanders but it is much more beautiful down here...in many, many ways. Being from Christchurch I could be biased but this would be a great city to base it in - warm dry weather, lots of city surf beaches, close to awesome mountains, lots of suitable venues (indoor and outdoor), easy to get around/across town, less expensive than AK, International Airport with direct links to Oz & US, good clubs & cafes, lots of friendly people, the country's two hottest bands - Salmonella Dub and Shapeshifter, and not least home of Home of Poi. It would fit nicely between The Gathering at New Year and Destination (www.danceonarock.com) at start of March. Weatherwise February is definitely a better time of year (generally speaking!) than November. Winter-time, ie July, August would not be too crazy as we get lots of sunny days although can be hard frosts. Summer does make it more comfortable for those who want to camp outIf it is decided to hold it in the South I would be happy to help in any way possible. I have been involved in the organising and staging of 3 day music festivals in the country so would gladly offer my skills.Sam[This message has been edited by lunaphoria (edited 25 August 2001).][This message has been edited by lunaphoria (edited 26 August 2001).]

I've been involved in planning some small conferences before--probably bigger than this'll turn out to be, but not by a lotBased on that, I want to mention the following:1. You'd be surprised at how few people it takes to organize a conference. I've led a committee of three, and been involved in committees of five.2. Apart from some peripheral work, most of the planning will need to be handled by people on the ground--I don't just mean in NZ, I mean in Auckland (or wherever). So there needs to be a critical mass of dedicated and organization-minded volunteers in the host city.3. This may sound contrarian, but I would discourage setting the date *too* far away. Pulling together the conference won't necessarily be so much work that it needs that much lead-time, and I'm concerned that if it is too far in the future, people won't have the endurance to see it through, or will procrastinate, etc. Perhaps Feb 2003 (or perhaps even sooner) would be a better target.I'll make every effort to be there, wherever it is, and I'm willing to help organize in some way--or at least kibbitz.

Time for me to chime back in....Flash Fire, people have already contacted me and essentially I am sifting through those who want to be part of the committee and those who just are in the area and want to help out. THis way I feel a well rounded committee can be built and yes from all continents so that future events can be well covered. Right now I am getting all the suggestions and offers and ideas together and then I am forming an e-group to make communications with this easier. From there things can be voted on.Adam...Early 2004 is so that we will have the time to get the money for this together. There is more than man-power in question here. Also, we need ot set it further away so that people will have time to save for the trek, since it will cost a conciderable amount for most people.I am so grateful for all the interest and the ideas and offers of help. Thank you all. smile------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com
