The next post contains an attempt to quote and reply to a post (from the buddhist thread)-

Fire Tom, you are entitled to your opinion:

….as it gets funny (strange) how you can't stop to attack me for questioning your belief system and criticising mainstream Buddhist' approach. I will cease to pay attention to your postings/ to take you seriously if your attitude towards me remains like this - I am part of this 'world outside your head'.

A question is generally a request for information, not a diatribe. I’m not attacking you. Though, if you are criticizing a persons belief system, and you say you are, then you may encounter a little resistance.

This is a very good question:

…Having said this: to me it's funny how the 'self' ("ego" in this case) is condemned to be the "source of all evil/ suffering" - certain that it doesn't deserve this verdict.

I’m not prepared to even try to answer it, as you think it’s an attack.

Though, I will be interested to see how others answer.

My reply goes here.........

"You can't outrun Death forever.
But you can make the Bastard work for it."

Obviously, it's a real mess- the 'quote function' just can't seem to cope, and this has been a problem for some years.

Often, by tampering with the code I can get it looking right, but it's sometimes a real pain having to sort it out.

Can someone fix it?

First problem is that it substitutes '"…" for punctuation marks.

Second problem is that it includes my reply (and signature) in the 'quote'part.

Does anyone else have the same problem? Or, is this just some weird issue with my computer?

Ive had it seemingly work sometimes and not others. There was a post about how to make it work at some point. Something to do with capitals and backslashes

Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

I've not had the first problem, but the … isn't replacing " marks - it's replacing something else - if you have a look in Stone's post in the Buddhism thread, there's something else in there. I have no idea what it's called though.

For the second part, it happens when someone quotes a post that uses quotes but has no name inside the quote tags.
In the original post, semicolons are added into the quote tag automatically. When someone then quotes that post, the combination of : and ] (the end of the quote tag) messes things up a bit.
Taking out the semicolons seems to work to sort it out.

Not sure if that helps much. *shrug*

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Bovril, I think it was something I did.

I generally just type in [quote ] comments……… [slash quote]

That’s probably caused the problem.

- this is the wrong forum, sorry to say but it should be in "technical discussion"

- you have a full mess for some reasons:

a) every
 Written by : xyz

needs to be closed

every
 Written by : xyz

 Written by : abc

sub-quote needs to be closed

b) when you use " " within quoting it has the potential to go weird. I have pointed this out in another thread about the same topic, problem is still not fixed, what to do?

c) whenever someone is not quoting their source it gets potentially messy, i.e.
Written by : QUOTE YOUR SOURCE

In this case it's been Stone.

So taking your OP of this thread:

Thanks for that FireTom- so basically the problem occurs when someone either does use the 'quote' button, but then strips out the source, or, when they do the quote without using the 'quote' button and writing the code out themselves, without including a source?

And, that doesn't manifest as a problem with that actual post, but, when quoted later in a later post, as a 'nested' quote, it becomes a mess?

So- to test that out

So, Stone- if writing out the quote code yourself, if you're not going to put a source, I think you need to, after writing 'quote' in the square brackets, ensure that it's followed by a : and, at least one space, before closing the square brackets.

As in the following, which, though having no source, does contain the colon (:) and a space

It was, but not, I feel, with the same degree of clarity, given the amount of confusion on that thread smile

I'd like to make it clear that I still regard this as a 'bug' in the quote function, as-

although it could be argued that the problem is that people are creating the problem by using quote in the wqrong way, the fact remains that the 'quote' function itself is not consistent.

For example, when Stone writes out his quote thing, it seems to work correctly in that post- gibberish only appears when that initial quote-containing post is then quoted again by someone else.

It is thus inconsistent- it should either not work on the initial post (so providing useful immediate feedback), or, if it's going to work on the initial post, it should then consistently handle it in all subsequent re-quotes.

But you can make the Bastard work for it."
