Any educated guesses out there? Anybody?

I bet it's a _whole_ bunch...

Ravers, plus burners, plus punks , plus goths, plus circus freaks, plus travelers, plus new zealanders (not ravers, they get their own section, freaks! ), plus tribal peoples, plus clubbers, plus martial artists, there's more but this list is getting overlong... we could be a whole nation!!!

fremen, firemen, fremen... only "i" am missing

(sorry, frempersons, firepersons, frempersons just didn't have that "zing" )

Anyway, how many?

Do they have to concider themselves spinners? Most martial artists that I know do not because of the differentiation in style, form and movement.

Does it have to be limited to poi and staff? Bellydancers use double veils and canes. And let's actually not forget cane dancers, who can do some cool things.

Really, where are the limits. I mean if you want to get technical, a person who can flip a pencil between their fingers, a baton twirler in jr. high, I mean....really, that number shoots into the hundreds of thousands then.

But if you are talking strictly the styles you listed then I would say a double digit thousand, towards the low (under 15) end.

There are just too many variables to even really guess though.

I'd define a "spinner" as someone who would not object to carrying that label. I think it's a broad enough term that nobody who twirls staff, spins poi, or performs any of the other centrifugal arts (sword, hulas, fans) would object to it.

Jugglers aren't "spinners," per se. But if we include them, then there are millions, maybe even tens or hundreds of millions.

Spinners? I once did a napkin estimate and came up with 100,000-200,000. Of course, napkin estimates are based on made-up assumptions, fuzzy calculations, magic, hand-waving, smoke and mirrors, so go figure.

okay, since i obviously am not alone...

let's get scientific. i mean people that would consider themselves spinners, that at least have their own equipment and practice with it once a month (or more). flags, staff, baton, chains, meteors, whips, glowstringers, clubs, rope dart, yo yo's, list how many you think are in your area, and let's start counting, and see if any obvious areas aren't represented.
i figure, in texas alone, there are about 2000? people, with all the occasional stringer rave kids added. but we are pretty extensive here... along with california and washington, i'd say among the biggest in U.S. anybody else see lots of stringing going on at raves in your area? how's northeast rave scene lookin? If i were to take a wild stab at the whole country, (i've been around a little) i would say...
10,000? 15,000?

Perhaps a good place to start would be to ask Malcom how many different people have ordered from HOP since it began.

then take that number and work with it.

Thats an idea...if someone could research what % of the world's population prefer to buy their goods online...

Multiply that figure by the worlds population...after multiplying it by those who would prefer to buy offline (to get non-net spinner figures).

Then find out the poverty or subsistence levels for westernized countries where spinning is popular, add that to th epercentage coz those people may make their own or borrow others.

Then add all the other 'spinning arts', such as Pele suggested (bely dancers martial artists, aussie whirly wooden things..."

Then add all policemen who walk their beat twirling a truncheon...

Then multiply the whole figure by 3, coz we are sure to have missed lots of others out.

THAT, would be my aproximate guess

there's only 6 the rest of the 'performers' are just small bit very agile snails who dress up as fire dancers and via a series of complicated mirrors and lasers to make it look like they can fire spin.

i thinks there might be more than we think...

just read an article about pagan customs (still upheld) in a wee part of Germany where part of me family hails from.

Here goes: as part of Fastnacht (last day of carnival before assuming fasting) the village youth prepares a huge iron wheel and stuff it with rye straw which has to be harvested with a sickle and entirely prepared with handtools.
After sunset the enire village gathers to watch the spectacle after playing music, singing songs for just this occasion, and drinking.

An eight meter long wooden stick is used to roll the wheel down a hill which has loose straw in its path so it too will burn. It is rolled about three hundred meters to then roll into a stream.
Young folk would spin prepared wooden and lit brooms in circles (yay, fire spinners !!).
It takes ten of the strongest young fellows of the village to roll the wheel down the hill.

This has been done since people can remember.
The fire marshall stands by (they also grew and prepared the special rye straw this past year)
I just love how the ole pagan customs survive unter the mantle of christianity. Helau !

Why?
