HI everyone! I am just wondering if anyone has used cane alcohol for poi.. I am in Puerto Escondido Mexico and cannot find fuel anywhere (except gasoline which I refuse to use) - If anyone can let me know if they have used alcohol before... I think it{s pretty much my only option! Okay, thanks for your help. Sorry to use the social discussion for a technical question, but I figure this forum has the most traffic! Thanks a ton for any info!!! - I usually use parafin - lamp oil, but that{s pretty hard to find!!

man, i hate to say it, but a lot of folks i know resort to deisel when they go down to mexico. it's smoky as hell, but it lasts forever and there's plenty of it! you could also try finding corn grain alcohol. jsut watch out for boom type explosions!

thanks arashi- how explosive is diesel? Is it a lot less dangerous than regular gasoline? People around here (who don't do poi) tell me that petroleum of some kind would be a good alternative - Anyone with experience with petroleums? any feedback? I'll keep searching. the smoke shouldn't be too much of a problem on the beach if I don't get too close to people, I just don{t know how flammable deisel is.. is it like white gas? Like I said, I'm a parrafin devotee!! okay.. thanks again... I'll keep searching.

no, deisel is actually pretty safe, i would say in the kerosene range, it just isn't used because it is REALLY smoky. i would say mix in some alcoholic fuel if possible, like corn squeezins, just to cut down on the smoke. by explosive i meant the corn alcohol, which is real expolosive, but can be added in percentages to make a cleaner burn (is the word for corn alcohol ethanol? darnit i'm having a brain fart)

honestly i don't know about cane alcohol exactly. but... i think that's what they water down to make fake tequila, like JOSE CUERVO!!!! burn it, man, in the name of awful hangovers everywhere! seriously, i would guess that it would be fine to mix it in with the deisel. alcohol is alcohol. dulce, while you're there in mexico, drink some agave tequila for me, huh?

Arashi...

I am dissapointed...
What she is talking about is Sugar Cane rum which is high quality stuff!

My uncle make the bootleg variety down in Puerto Rico and its about 80% alcohol (no joke) if its the homemade variety... People call it fire water where I am from.
Well... direct translation:
agua ardiente = burning water

Its called CashaÇa (pronounced kashassa) in Brazil..

Sos...
I suspet it should be ok to spin with but I doubt it will last for any reasonable ammount of time...

Much love ang big luck vibes going your way,

You probably won't have much luck mixing alcohol with a petrolium-based fuel like diesel. Alcohol is a polar molecule, diesel isn't.

you can have both one one torc, though.

good luck!

hey drome pixie, so i hear that bad tequila is tequila flavored sugar alcohol, do they use the same kind of sugar as cane alcohol, just a cheaper version? or is the cane stuff a whole different ball game? just curious

TOTALLY different ball game.
As far as I know lots of bit of South america and the Carribean are specialists in the field...
I am unsure of the practices in Mexico but if its called Cane rum it is made from sugar cane and has a fiery knock once you hock it back!

Like they say in the south 'itll grow the hairs on yer chest boy' (well least from where ma daddy's from )

Like I say my uncle is an expert in the field!

Its well good stuff if you are a fan of the hard core... Traditionally people run around all kinds of parties in PR with a massive glass 2+ gallon jug under one arm and a glass in the other... They hand people shots and watch them get drunk! Note the one with the jug usually is on the beer its in his back pocket... They just enjoy getting people slaugtered and it is so nice to get pissed on that stuff...

I could live off fresh sugar cane, and Pitorro (traditional Puertorican name for the stuff) 'agua ardiente is just a nickname for it...

So yeah its a totally different ball game! If you like Tequila and hard core whisky then you will like this although the intense burn overrides the taste so us got to become a pro before you can drink the stuff like real water

Hope I cleared it up for you,
Drome

Ma daddy always told me 'you got the disease girl, if yous a reagan then yus gots an innar affinitey for alcohol, laike ah duuck in wwwater '

Funny though I have never been there but it feels like part of me! I wanna go to the south one day and talk the talk and walk the walk. But I aint want to be confused for an Alabama ...southernbell...
its always the baptist preacher's daughter isnt it...

Well yeah what can I say man I like alcohol!

Has some good uses! My dad has used it to sterilize wounds the good old way when nothing else was available...

Much happy drinking,

Thanks for the input. Off to Pemex it is... the alchol that I have is pure alchol de caña - es super barato. It's probably used in cane rum, but it's like 50 cents a 1/2 liter.. definately the cheap stuff!!! I{m off to make this work, because I just asked someone here what they used for fuel and they said gasoline from all i've read here, I think I will keep a distance.. Okay, wish me luck in the new fuel experimentation.
oh- the cheap tequila you're thinking of is probably Mezcal... though some of it is quite good stuff!!!!!!!!!!!

alchol de caña translates to cane rum and is NOT used in it... Its the same thing...

Is it so hard to believe that we've got our own alcoholic tendencies?! or is it just not well known... Most othe things are form other places... tequila, moonshine, sake you know what i mean...

*appologises for her latinos are considered inferior sometimes complex*

anyhow... its not me making this up... I reffered to it before see:

message nos 11-12... Sugarcanerum!

Much love and respect (sorry if I seemed to be a bit 'I know more than you about this')

Booze of varied types is basically ethanol and water. Traces of methanol if it wasn't properly distilled, possibly a few longer chained alcohols and random other shit. If you can get it pure enough (i.e. >100 proof or 50% by vol or so) it burns. Not as nicely as some other fuels, but useable.

Ethanol is *not* soluble in pertroleum products (white gas, kero, lamp oil, diesel, etc) and if you mix them you'll just get two phases. Think oil on top of water. Mixing petroleum (or other nonpolar) based fuels together works, mixing petroleum and grain alcohol wont to any appreciable extent.

well yeah by it works i just meant that it doesn't matter if they actually mix or not, cause you get them both on your wick anyway. i use a parrafin mix with alcohol all the time. they both burn and that's all you need.

dulce, does your cane alcohol tell ya what proof it is, by any chance? which as ya prolly know's double the % number of alcohol; too low and the water in it will put out flame.

just so ya know, alchol translates to alcohol... Ron translates to rum. the stuff i was using was pure cane alcohol... Not pure cane rum, nowhere close to anything good and nothing i would put close to my mouth. I'm not saying that Mexico doesn't produce good alcohol and am nowhere close to saying that latinos are inferior.... This topic has nothing to do with any of those things. I'm just saying that I bought the absolute cheapest pure alcohol that I found for the sole purpose of burning it. I would not burn sugar cane rum. I would drink it.

no hard feelings... but this stuff ain't no sugar cane rum. If it was, it would have cost me much more than 5 pesos per plastic bottle..

other than that, thanks to all for their comments and help. I had some fun burns and hope to have some more here in Veracruz.

On a related note, anybody know if there is any problem getting fuel across the border? We have a gig in Mexico this weekend and we were planning to simply bring our fuel on the private bus we're traveling on.
We thought we'd carry brand new, never opened cans and then mix it and transfer it into our performance fuel containers when we got there.

FireMike, the last bottle of mezcal I had was 76 proof. "Aguardiente de cana." Mmmm.

Maximus- I don't think there should be a problem getting the fuel across the border as people who are camping do it on a regular basis. I'll let you know if i hear anything different, but I don't think you'll have a problem.

Thanks, dulce.
Should you (or anybody else) be able to make it over, we'll be performing at the Oasis Club in Rosarito Beach, Baja, Mexico, this Saturday, Nov. 30th. Tickets still available:

If we have any leftover coleman or lamp oil, we'll be glad to give it to you. We should be easy to find--we're the fire dancers!

For future reference, we experienced no trouble at either end of the trip with our fuel. The border guard was there, national guard troopsmen with latex gloves, bomb- and drug-sniffing dogs and everything. Going in was easy.
Coming out we had to bribe a cop to let us go around the huge line of cars. Then we got off the bus and they ran the dogs through. The promoter wanted me to stay with the bundles of staffs and canned fuel in case they had any questions. They had none. We had coleman and lamp oil in original containers and a mix in a red plastic fuel can. They had no questions for me, and I was ushered through the checkpoint quickly with the other anglos while our two big latino security guards, born and raised in the US, were being asked such questions as "What is the capital of Minnesota? Which is the "show me" state?"
The gig, by the way, was a blast. What's more, we got invited back. We'll be doing it again Dec. 28.

peace,
Maximus

I'm back. Count me in for the party. You make tofu tacos? Diesel is a very smelly fuel, but it got the job done without explosions! Luckilly we ran into a party on a river in Veracruz last Saturady, so I got to light up all night to Psy-trance! And I finally pulled off btbw with fire! I had been worried about burning my face, but the first few times were a big step! With time it'll be a normal move !! Yeah!!! Thanks again for the help guys! Maximus - glad to hear your trip went smoothely. I hope your friends were able to remember their elementary history lessons... You never know what you'll get with an INS official!
