I don't know about you guys overseas but here in Australia we're getting an overload of TV advertisments about ringtones. Apologies to those overseas who have no idea what I'm talking about.....just look up crazy frog on google and you'll understand smile

Every second ad you hear the 'Crazy Frog' ringtone and all of the Crazy Frogs friends and their songs which cost something like $4-5....and advertisments about games you can download on your phone for goodness knows how much. And you might think 'Well if you don't like them, don't watch them'. The thing with that is...is that they are on every other channel. Especially on the music channels on Austar. But it's worse on Austar then it is on standard TV, I hope standard TV doesn't get as bad as Austar.

I can't BELIEVE how it's sucking people in. We're allowed to have mobile phones at school during recess and lunch/before and after school and there's been one too many times that I've heard kids playing stupid ringtones that they've purchased.

It's like it's exploiting kids ideals of being 'cool' and having the new and up to date ringtones. Surely the mobile companies are getting millions of dollars anyway. I can't imagine how much they'd be paying channels to advertise them just about every second add. Does anyone else think this is a problem?

Now I really don't watch TV much...maybe an hour a night and occasional flicking on the music channels. It's getting to the point when I get really frustrated and angry whenever there is a phone ad that I'm losing all interest in watching TV.

What would happen if everyone started losing interest in TV because of the ads...then would they stop?

Here in Germany, (I've never seen it in Canada) on MTV and VIVA music channels, the commercials are ALL ring tones. Many times have I seen the same commercial played up to three times in one commercial brake. The tones are HOIRRBLE, and annyoing, and I really hate them. When the commercials come on, I have to mute the tv because I can't stand it, at ALL. Grr.... I don't even know if people buy them or not, but the commercials drive me mad. I hope it's not like that when I get back to canada! I miss our funny beer commercials...

thankfully, I don't watch that much TV, and when I do, it's probably MTV or VIVA because sometimes I like seeing music videos while I iron - which is the only time I watch it! Unless I want my brain to melt, like on a friday afternoon after a stressful week... But I still mute the horrible commercials!!

Yep, we get it in the UK too!

Its a complete nightmare, surely they realise, that after hearing the censored tones on adverts every 15 minutes, the last thing anyone wants is to have them playing on their phone too!

The tones are HOIRRBLE, and annyoing,

This sounds like a 'Quatermass/Dr Who' scenario, with our nations youth being brainwashed by wierd sounding, but stangely apppealing, digital ringtones smile

Seriously, IMO, all advertising directed to children is a disgrace. They, of all people, are least able to defend against such pressure.

The fact that there are so many adverts would suggest that they do work, and that a lot of money is being gotten through them.

I think once a 'product' becomes a school yard craze, then the sky's the limit in terms of profit.

I guess mobile phones are ideal for this, the people who are going to have to fork up are the parents, and they won't know the extent of the problem till they get the bill.

Also, IMO, mobile phones and dodgy scams seem to be especially well suited to each other.

I wonder if this is a case of the companies selling these things knowing that, when the bills start coming in, there's going to be campaigns to get them banned, and that they're basically pushing it as hard as possible to get as much cash as they can while it's possible?

That is a good point. They are probably making the most of it while they can....but I can't help but think about the millions of dollars they're getting from the stupid frog.

I even made this to help voice my opinion.

I'm sick of the adds aswell. Only decent music time now is Rage.
It annoys me that all these kids things its cool to buy all these stupid things, it really annoys me that kids as young as 8 are getting mobile phones now. Why does a kid that young need one? They shouldn't be somewhere that their parents dont know about etc.
Then all these parents complain that their kids are racking up huge bills. it's stupid and crazy.

As for ringtones and pictures, if your phone has infa red or blue tooth, you just buy the adaptor for your phone for $25-40 and you can install as many ringtones and backgrounds for free. If it's on the net its yours. I haven't paid for any of mine and i've got the tones i like and lots of cool pictures, even ones that are on the adds.

I once thought that banning mobiles for people below 16 was stupid because im below 16 but if its the only way to kill that damn frog then it must be done. Seriously though have you ever seen it on anyones phone whose over 16. This crazy frog craze makes me ashamed to be young because its us who keep the ringtone companies in business.
Mabey the government could outlaw that stupid frog simply because its annoying.... well i can always dream.

Did anyone in the UK (or elsewhere if get it!) watch the episode of Holyoaks where Tony and Mandy bought little Tom a mobile? I understand where they are coming from but come off it he's way to young!

These ring tone commercials are taking over all channels adn slowly6 but surely we are going to be swomped on everychannel. One or two here adn there i wouldnt mind but they are actually causing stress and rather than muting i turn over the channel.

Its the same with injury lawers adn personal calim adverts where you have a pathetic re-enactment and an actor saying how please they were they got £3,500 for falling over in a reallymonotone voice! The worst one is the waitress in the resturant who slipped over a bit of food which hadnt been cleaned up! If she'd been looking were she was going then she could have avoided it!!! It was a kitchen!!!

hehehe, i especially like the hidden contract bindings that those ringtone companies have. In austria/ germany they will charge you 5 euros a month, after your first download, even if you arent getting anything the next months.

also i find it irresponsible to have these ads, as the main focus group are children and idiots.
i dont care about grown up idiots paying stupidity tax for ordering bloody ringtones.
but children dont know better.
i have read about kids spending as much as 2000 euros on this crap over the course of a few months. They dont realise the expenses that are connected to this.

Seriously, it's a wired world. My friend's kids played with cell phone toys. Tehre's "My first laptop" toys too, and there's picturephone Sesame Street toys too. It's the way of the world now, we're all connected.

I've got a phone too, but it's prepaid, my credit stinks.

These mobile phone ads are slowly taking over the world.

It can't be too long before the protests/petitions/complaints come in...

I get really stressed when I see them. I used to be able to handle them but now after discussing it and learnt that it's all around the world it's really becoming a problem!

The big challenge for me on my last phone was that I wanted my phone to just...RING.

Not sing to me, not rap, not play a Beethoven concerto. I just wanted the stupid phone to RING. Even a simple digital ring ("beep-beep-beep-beep-beep") would have been fine.

And that was not an option. shrug

Oh dear, how tragic!!

I hate all (well, the majority of them) ringtones, so always have my phone on vibrate. As for the adverts i put the TV on mute as soon as i can. Weird thing is these censored adverts come on late at night - like between 11and 12pm when the late night poker is on!! And yes they are spreading to all channels, but the trend will die soon, once they become to dear or the kids get bored.

It is truly disgraceful how the 5-16 range are the most profitable sector of society - how many films have you seen which were made in the past few years which was for adults only? I miss good old violent films or ones with loads of shagging in them. Everything's too PC now redface

I think its sad that ringtones (typically a dodgy remake of pop songs) outsold cd singles for the first time a few months ago...a sign of the times I guess...

In the US I've only seen a few of those adverts with the frog. I've seen more banners for them on xanga and such. The TV commercials were REALLY REALLY ANNOYING.

I am proud to say that I do not own a cell phone. I cannot be gotten ahold of MWA HAHAHA. It's a great feeling.

Does anyone else ever feel chained to the telephone? I like to just not answer my house phone sometimes just to show that I don't have to. The rining phone does not own me!

I mean the ape one is seriously ridiculous! Its an ape doing a fart song! It makes me puke, and the worst thing is im supposedly in the age group that goes for it the most, 16 and I cant belive anyone my age would fall for that crap!
