So theres a move that Ive been doing with double staves that I just translated to poi. Its still rather shloppy but I think it has some potential. Its sort of like an isolation, except youre only isolating a single axis of the poi's rotation. In other words, your poi end up moving only in a straight line rather than a circle.

The best way to get what I mean is to stand in front of a mirror spinning one poi at your side (closest to the mirror) and try to spin your poi but having it only move straight up and down. Its easiest if you let the head trace your legs in the mirror. What youre basically doing is moving your hand forward and back (the diameter of your poi's circle) so that the poi doesnt have to move on that axis.

Still havent played with it enough to find anything really interesting but Ill be sure to work on it. In the mean time, play yourselves and see what you can find!

Cool idea, but it wont look much different to someone watching.... it may just look like an ellpise that's longer in the same direction you are moving your hand...

Reason is, if you move your hand at the same speed as the poi head, the poi wont be moving relative to your HAND on that axis, but it still will be moving realative to the ground and to anyone else watching.
it still might look cool, try it and see what happens! :-D

Ah but what if each hand is doing one of these either a) parallel to each other but going the opposite direction or b) doing these perpendicular to each other. In the wall plane these might look quite nifty with fire/glow stuff...

Yep, bouncy poi indeed... Its hard to do this smoothly without turning it elipse but looks rather nifty when ya get it. I can usually only get like 2 - 3 revolutions straight right now. I did, however, figure out you can do this in TTN form too with your poi going up and down parallel to each other but I have yet to get this looking anywhere near good smile

You should speak with Simian about this - he's been playing with something that sounds similiar a bit. Mainly with staff I think, but also with poi.

Whatever he's doing with it, it makes my head hurt wink

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I seem to remember talking to Simian at Spitz about something similar- I was doing the same thing but with the motion being horizontal rather than vertical- works rather nicely smile

Simian and myself to a lesser extent have been playing with squares in which the poi move around all 4 sides of a square - but the isolations required aren't linear.

Well couldn't you just move a point isolation in lines or squares or even sign your name with it?

(wonders how long it'd take before I could isolate "NYC")

point isolations for more than one beat only exist in people imaginations.

in real life it is called 'flailing' and usually involves disappointment.

squares are the holy grail.

grail rhymes with flail.

draw your own conclusions...

From what I've managed to get from simian, you move your hands left and right and the poi go up and down. That also requires antispin I think.

If you were using a blue glowstick on a string, and also had a red glowstick as the handle, you'd end up with a blue vertical line and a horizontal red line, which crossed over each other in the middle.

Does that sound about right?

I dunno. The one I usually do is an anti-spin split time butterfly buzzsaw flower. Theres actually a shot of Nick Woolsey doing it at around 2:15 in this video. Its not actually a perfect square but close enough smile

Stars are possible actually... Not sure exactly how, I cant do them, but all it would be is some wonky timed version of an anti-spin flower.

anti-spin is just isolation with bells on.

if you want a line of reasoning (first time for everything i guess), look up my pendulums thread (a search for 'post-modernist' should do it wink) and compare and contrast anti-spin technique with isolating pendula at the peaks of their swing and moving the pivot point.

now I'm not sure how cole does his.. but you can use airtraces(ie contactless traces) to make them...

traces involve pulling the poi rather than letting it go head first.. pull up stop your hand, as the head nears your hand (from momentum) pull right.. as the head nears hand, pull down.. and so forth.. the trick is that you have to go at least string length, and you have to have hella timing to get the slack out as the stick reaches hand level.. or your edges will be off...

I never put much effort into them.. but cole makes them look quite nice.. I'm jealous.. hug nice one bruva.. nice one..
