Anybody else notice that the same few photos keep popping up on the above 'scrolling photos'?

I feel like I'm either seeing Pounce or my favorite supercute photo of Coleman with the Eeyore gloves.

I know that there are lots of other photos in the gallery that I haven't seen pop up.

What's the dealy? Or is there some poor soul who has to look at me everytime they sign on? wink

And I assume that the 'random' photos on the homepage are just a smaller set that keep rotating right? Cuz they're always really good firey ones.

I'm off to bed. G'nite kids. biggrin

saying 'do a durbs' without any hint of what durb term to use is rubbish.

i tried durbsing for 'scrolling photo', 'random photos', 'hop title bar', 'title bar photo' and 'title bar random photos'.

all of which churned out pages and pages of unrelated threads.

any hints from mods or mybe even durbs the durbs master himself...?

I agree, and I'm getting really tired of having to say, "I did a search but..." or "I want to know about such and such, but don't what keyword to use." rolleyes

The trick with the search is to simplify things and utilise the filters.... I simply typed 'gallery', limited search to "in subject only" and then, knowing that the scrolling gallery is a fairly recent addition to HOP, filtered the time 2 within the last 2 months.

The more words you type in the search field the more irrelevant stuff it will bring up, especially if you don't change the search parameters from "within subject and body" to "subject only". It will also bring up search results for each word individually, so for example, if you do a search for "scrolling gallery", it will bring up ALL posts that feature either of these words.

Hope that helps.

PS - coleman - if you actually click on my durbs hyperlink, you'll see that I linked it to the thread in question...

I think there's a difference between doing a search to find a topic that's been discussed many times before and doing a search to find ONE sentence that Malcom said months ago in the middle of a mulitiple paged thread.

I still didn't find the answer to my question about where the photos on the home page came from but I'm still reprogramming my search algorithms. I will have to see if my funding comes through before I can search further.

I keep seeing the same pictures day in, day out. I'm seeing a lot of pounce and a lot of people doing "foot poi" on a very regular basis!

I wonder how random it really is? I wonder, if I am on HOP at a totally different time than I normally am, will I see a different batch of pics?

that was the last question asked in the other thread and it was never answered frown

loads of other people noticed the same thing too.

and nyc also asked if the home page picture was randomly from the gallery.

so the durb didn't help at all really... shrug

The trouble with "random" things is that computers can ever be random - you can't ask them to "think of a number", the most you can do is perform a complex formula based on something fixed (say the number of letters in the picture title) - which is why if you ever set your PC/iPod to "random" play, it often plays the same tracks, sometimes always playing the same 2 back-to-back, and probably why the same photos keep appearing at the top smile

Damn... Y'all are blind.

In the other thread Malcom explains that it only takes photos that have been viewed 50 times.

If you need any help doing a search Flash, PM me and I'll explain how you can limit your search to more specific words. Or ask someone who actually works here. kiss

Neither can humans.

PHP's built in rand() is pretty good thou. For better results thou, it's quite easy to implement this thing into scripts.

So wait... the popular ones get more popular and are shown more and more until they hit the magical 2000 and then they're never seen again?

Hey, probably not really adding anything by saying this because of the whole once-viewed 50 times thing.. but I've seen one of my pics up there once, when a lot of them have been viewed over 50 times. I'm not complaining, it just seems odd that I do see the same 20 pics or so almost every time I come on, whatever time of day or for however long I'm online (4hrs at the mo)...

It's a shame there isn't a way to view like 10 thumbnails randomly from all the galleries regardless of popularity or relevance.. I love looking at people's amazing/random pics!

What a wonderful miracle if only we could look through each other's eyes for an instant.

I'm slowly beginning to realize:

The easiest way to get what you want is to convince everyone else that they thought if it first.

I mean... Darn. You all beat me. Now there will be random images rather than the same ones that kept bothering me. Curse you all. I have been outsmarted again.
