if they can be classified as such, you can do weave type and butterfly type moves with fans, depending to some extent on the type of fans you have. Some of the fans dancers in our troupe use throws and even roll the fans across body parts. Learning transitions between moves is really the hardest part I'd say, fans aren't quite as easy to change direction as poi or staff eh wink

I have to agree with Musashii. Transitions are the hardest for me, though I still can't catch anything that I throw. Dancing around and slowly moving fans can be very sexy, some do it exclusively and the twirling and tossing isn't even missed.

Admitidly i dont actually do CJ but having read this thread it seems that people are havinmg trouble thinking of new directions. Heres a quote from a dead guy that might help "with out contries there is no progression" basically think of what CJ is and do the opposite and you cannot fail to be doing the unexpected and innovative. People may make fun of you and say 'thats not CJ' but who cares what anything is if its hard to do and looks good they'll start learnin it soon enough.

Does this site actually exist? Or am i talking to all my other personalities?

Do fans count as contact juggling then, rather than being a twirly/spinny thing?

I anyone finds the nonfire huge fans that Jamilla was talking about tell me please. I'm looking for a set. Actually I'm just looking for the ribs of a couple of giant collapsible fans that I can cover with my own fabric.

OK Arsn how IS your fire fan spinning and tossing going. Have any hints for the newbie? biggrin

I just got some fans for Christmas, so I guess you could say I didn't really JUST get them, but I haven't played with them much because I feel so limited on what I can do. I don't know the design of other fans but mine are heavy with handles and they are fixed, meaning they don't close. I've tried spinning them around my fingers and thumbs but that tends to give me blisters and I lose the momentum. I have a feeling it's all in the wrists. Any suggestions?

Just three words. Practice, practice and practice.

Sooner or later you'll develop calluses and with that ugly word practice, you'll soon find the right amount of thrust that you need to give them to keep momentum going. And your right, a lot of it is in your wrists.

Yeah, after playing around with them a little more I have discovered there are a lot of simple moves you can do with them that look really complicated and cool. I lit them up this past weekend and someone got a video of it and it looke surprisingly difficult. I think I often underestimate the appeal of the basic movements and that causes me to feel limited.

i prefer fabric fans,

i find there's more u can do with a completly fluid set of fans, spinning from the rips of the leading edge or hodling on the to leading edge itself, to spinining multiple sets at once.

I've also seen them made out of many different materials, from lame, to tye dyed silk, to being colour chaning, to having LED's embedded in the ribs of the fan.

Maybe for stilt walking you want to check out a few of the bellydance sites. They have these huge fabric wings (watch out for strong winds) called Wings of Isis.
I found one with a picture... Have a look!
