This board here is the first one I ever entered on the internet and I am glad I did. Realized it yesterday cause I found myself thinking of the HOP and all the beautiful people on the board, thinking about you as I think of my friends and family (eeer... actually my friends ARE my family..) To those of you I am in touch with personnaly and those whose post i just read with great interest and pleasure without always responding though : I love you and thank you with all my soul. smilethat being said, entering the HOP I also discovered a whole new "online" world and vocabulary (apart from the foreign language issue) and the most surprising one to me was "ONLINE PERSONNALITY"wowI know my personnality has various faces : happy, sad, gentle and nice and , yes, ugly or "cheap" pretty much like anyone. Personnalities evolve of course... and also I know that when I dance with fire my body language and personnality, or should I say my "attitude" (?) are not that of an everyday work attitude... But I see it as one house with different rooms... And as i write here on the board I am "naked" (don't give me that dirty look, just dunno any better word wink ) or so I thought .... But hidden behind our computers, who are we ? I sometimes feel I am actually even more honest "online" because there is nothing to prove, but sometimes I find myself holding back from saying something and not entering a thread, whereas I probably would say what I think in flesh and bone reality... (editing this bit, cause I see how unclear my english was, thanks Super !)So what is the meaning of "online personnality" ? why "flame" someone ? is there less respect online because people feel "protected", like people behind a mask who'd dare do things they'd never do in every day life ?Don't misunderstand me, I feel warmth and respect here, but this just got me thinking in a more general aspect ... What do you think ?gee, we are all over the world and talking and sharing, isn't that amazing ? But I just can't wait to SEE you actually see the faces, the eyes and the smile that go with the words. Some of you have met here and there, lucky you smile I can't wait for that gathering in NZ in 2003 !!!Do I make sense ? I am confused myself on what exactly is my point, just wondering...Shine onCassandra[This message has been edited by cassandra (edited 08 September 2001).]

well, i think i'll have a go... certian people i feel i know pretty decently on here. or at least how thye choose to represent themselves, but i feel it woudl be a very twisted web to have anyone prominent on here be fake, since so many people know them in real life....

anyhow, as to myself, Kyrian is basically me. it's a nickname of sorts (albeit as made up as zel, long story) but it was funny cause peregine actually introduced me as Kyrian the other day... and Nyx left a message for me as Kyrian which was just funny. Kyrian is a little more me tho, if that makes any sense. Sometimes in person i am shy to hug people or to say stuff 'cause i'm afraid people will think i'm too forward. (unless i know no one from anywhere before whatsoever *including online* and then i'm very outgoing )
Kyrian is a little more outwardly loving and friendly than i feel like i can be with a lot of people. ah well. The other thing about Kyrian is that she is almost all positive, and i am not always as perfect, i guess you could say. Oh well, she is pretty much me, and as long as you seem comfortable with me in person you can get all the happy hugginess and such of Kyrian too

Hmmmm....

I've tried to avoid this thread as long as possible. Been taking time to consider myself on and offline. I'm more or less identical in both states. Apart from the constant smiling and generally how touchy feely I am. I'm a big hugging person, and much prefer speaking to people face to face than via email etc. I like to see peoples eyes when I speak to them, which some people find somewhat of an invasion.

However, I guess I am very ME on here to. Ignoring the fact that if we were all sat in a big room having this thread out as a conversation, i'd be the one who is really animated about what they're saying. I kind of talk with my body and face, not just my mouth.
*Sound suggestive - oops*

I'm a much more personal person in the flesh. On here I feel distanced. So maybe I am NOT like this in real life at all? May be I think I am, but I'm not......

Shit!! Thought I had it then....

* Dibs runs away back to her drawing board to sketch her 'on/offline' personalities *

My mental state (I am sorry to say) is the same. But I prefer to express myself physically, and feel on here I am restricted in doing this (obviously) therefore, I conclude that ............

...fuck!!!! WHAT DO I CONCLUDE?!!!

The opinions of Cantus pretty much are the opinions of Anonymouse Sunspot. As to my own opinions (those of anonymouse) I'm not sure what aspects of my personality I'm gonna let shine through with this one.

As to whether I'm truly Cantus' friend - I only have his best interests at heart. Cantus just wishes he could post himself. But a promise is a promise.

He'll be back eventually.

Sepa, lucky you that you took me rant as a joke cos some people don't understand that I am joking when a serious discussion is baking.
In the offline world™ my joke digressions aren't really registered until people see the accompanying gesture (an akwardly raised eyebrow, a baring of smile, a Bridge of Madison County.)
I find what Sunspot says of online interaction rings very true.. that we avoid the issue of appearances, and that it shouldn't matter at all in the first place! D'ya often find a guy's eyes wander on south when the cleavage overtakes your conversation?
Internet cameras are a step closer to this problem haunting the online world™.
Sexual tension has its advantages, but i prefer it in the offline world - even if it is messier! I guess it comes down to numbers too: more people are inclined to interact openly when they are not threatend by the hurdle of physical appearances!

What on earth is "grufty" sis?

Rozi sent me/anonymouse a wicked picture of a big fat mouse. Just thought I'd tell ya.

Yeah, yeah I'm a poo head. And to think I adopted you when all the other famlies just walked by your bed in that orphanage. And I feed you and make you bake me cakes and let you climb on me and take me off adventuring. And this is the thanks I get. You commit me to pooheadom.

Well this is the straw that broke the camel's back me laddo (and no mistake).

Erm. Hi.

I came back.

Did you miss me?

good one Bender

good topic, though much of it I've heard before a few times. I'm not much for roleplaying online, so I don't play a character.
Having said that, everything we do is always autobiographical - always says something about ourselves.

Xaeda: another INFP; I get INFP/J although I expect that's changed a bit now - should do the full one some time.. you'd make the third I 'know' (using the term loosely). Stat's wise, that's accurate my only bitch about it is that many people use it like a star sign.
You spin damn well, I learned my basics from your vids. And I'm perfecting my fingerspins slowly (hopefully will see how I fair with some smaller staffs tonight).
And being disorganised doesn't mean you're not an expert. I get accused of being one and my desk is... well.. lately I've been slightly more organised

Screen anonymity. Most communication is non verbal, so what ends up on the screen is typically slightly out of context (main cause of arguments). It pays to think out a comment.

Yes. Raymond Phule is a whole lot more... excided and... yeah in real life He's really cool. (Although I only saw him the first time he did fire poi, so that might have added onto the excided part).

being unlike MikeGinny one consistent "i am who i am" (as YHWH = "god" said), i'm always with Murray Minstrel on this one, though i go further:

quote:
Online multiple personalities - when one is tired let another out to shine - hide behind each, but let all show aspects of the whole.

We are legion. We are many.
Storyteller/plant/mouse

i put out that the other parts of you don't have to hide, for an extrovert, they can all be at play, even if one or a few of them are more in play, without hiding the others except in the artificially narrowed senses or imagination of someone else perceiving ya!

& i'm also with maladmin (tom) who sez:

quote:
[. . .]So far as multiple personalities go I know I have them, I'm different at work than at home, and I tailor myself to fit in with different groups of people. I think this is a good thing so long as each personality is allowed to influence the others since it lets you develop what is you.

[. . .]Take care everyone

coz even going beyond selectively giving a group the things ya got which fit them, you can even reach into what you don't have yet. . . i'm radical. posing ain't a bad thing either, we do it all the time, when you do it hard enough. . . hard enough, with enough of your heart, a substantial part or two of you, it becomes for reals.

What a lovely thread that was. It is great to plunge in and swim around in it again, even if anonymouse has become the minstrel

When I was posting then, it was a lot more rarely. I was posting to some of the deeper stuff then, & didn't know as many people as well, and so wasn't joining in the personal stuff as much. I was kinda shy & serious.

Another part of my personality is showing right now, just as it would in real life. Talking more, shorter comments, in jokes. I am having to restrain myself from my usual sarcastic comments, cos although I feel so comfortable here that I could make them, maybe my knowing wink that said it was a joke, still wouldn't be seen.

Do you find that your online mood/personality changes day to day? Or is it more constant than your offline personality?

It was a day for screaming at inanimate objects.

What this calls for is a special mix of psychology and extreme violence...

isn't it like gambling when you meet them offline? I am quite pleased with my record so far - most of the time, meeting 'net people offline has been an incredibly rewarding experience. More hits than misses! for the odd abusive person, and end to dialogue. for the fantastic friends, a lifetime of friendship! It is for those gorgeous souls that keep up the socialising.
emailing becomes a chore tho!

I am the same way online as offline. Its way too difficult to keep track of various personas and creations like that.

My "persona" in the SCA is just like me, just with a different name.

you a gambler, .bender?

well, aren't we all, always, really, we sometimes pretend we aren't to use an intentionally oversimplified view of how much we're gambling, how much is going on around & involving us.

so Raph is a non-gamble, as i do take Raph, seriously, at his word, much respect for repping what he feels, at my best gamble-of-a-feel for him. just as one or two others here say they are a single, consistent personality. yes, if you feel you need to keep track of different personalities, they may not be strong enough to need to play for yous to bes fulfilleds. may your one identity be victorious, Raph & other single-personality friends of ours!

Sparkie Cass, thank you I have figured that one out in the meantime cause that thread was posted a while ago (will be in Brissy in March so we can throw a Cass party then ? )

I must say I am still not so sure I like the idea of playing with different online personna on HOP . I quite like people who are themselves

FYI, Raphael is indeed the same in real life, only taller

Is there more chance to be disappointed in meeting someone IRL after first having met them online or see them first, have a certain opinion and then get to discover their souls

Looking forward to your input

If I wanted to create an online persona, being a fencer wouldn't be my first pick. A professional tennis player, or some other sport would make much more sense if I wanted to impress the masses, most of whom think that fencing deals either in barbed wire or stolen watches.

I am too busy and just not interested in playing any role other than my own.

Cass, I don't have a soul, I traded mine for a crepe with nutella and banana.

*slurp*

Its easy for someone sitting behind a computer screen to invent themselves. The only problem then comes when you meet face to face only to discover that it was just a pack of lies.
Kind of like the guy who seems all tough and in control of EVERY situation..then his wife walks into the room and he becomes a quiet little house mouse who only says "Yes, dear."

The internet has vast possibilities that I frankly believe have barely been tapped. It also makes deception of this kind quite easy and the kind of personal petty conflict that we have all seen on HoP lately quite safe.

Better to think before you hit the send button.
