does someone know how to make a monkeyfist and hide the ends? is there a way to make it look smooth on the outside and hide the ends somehwere in the knot?

It is just a matter of tying the not close to the end of the rope and then tucking the end tail inside of the knot as you tighten it.

You may find a loop of wire used as a needle will help you tuck the tail right in.

It also may take a few tries to get it to work.

You may also try a Turks Head, I find them more stable. It's easy to tie around a core, and they're expandable to make them long if you so desire and you're good enough.

Does a turks head really work?
I thought you could only tie those those around something like a stick.

Sure, a turks head is a pretty versatile family of knots. Here is a doubled up 5 bight three lead turks. It can be tied around a core, or use more rope to fill it, otherwise it tends to come out 'hollow' and soft. I think they're far more stable, better looking, and more versatile than a monkeys fist.. and like you said, you could easily tie it around a staff too, either as a grip or for a wick
