I guess the reason we can keep the price down is because we don't pay anyone's expenses to come and provide services - its kinda central to our philosophy that we want to attract people who love what they do and want people to learn it without it having to go though the capitalist evaluation of worth, costing, level of attraction or coolness of a particular skill. Supply and Demand etc etc.

After all, many of the skills that people take for granted occur outside of the workshops (Marty cleaning the toilets is a good example!).

yeah alot of non-twirling skillz really make it the social gathering that it is.

There's a level of personal interaction happening that's impossible at events not that much bigger. Common ground really lives up to it's name.

That put a big smile on my face, lovely philosophy, that's what it should all be about. I can go to Common Grounds, because I can afford it, whereas people like me (poor students) cannot go to UberOz or similar events because I need that money for porn, milk and other necessities, and it is kinda commercial discrimination. Obviously that's how a capitalist economy works, as such discrimination is an incentive for people to work harder to earn more money and increase the nation's GDP and aid economic growth and by extension, the health and luxury in which society as a whole lives in... but it also has many negative effects, like consumerism, greed and selfishness that arguably result in capitalism being something that works well in theory, but in practicality, doesn't work (something most capitalists will say about communism).

Sorry for the tangent, in short: I like that, I think you're doing the right thing and that you're good people.

^^I should point out in saying that, that we're not casting judgements on other events - I just think that its tricky ground when you start to say X can have a free ticket for doing Y and Z can be paid to do AA or whatever. the CG team would simply rather not enter into it smile I guess its about suspending the supply vs demand interactions that dominate suburban life for a long weekend. for example - if you go to Uber you *will* be taught by some really good teachers who represent the some of the highest skills around. If you come to CG, similar people might be there, but they might take a beginners tiddly winx workshop, and that's fine smile

If I had the time / money - I'd go to all the Aussie events. I really think that we have an awesome circuit down in Oz. but my capitalist reality makes that fairly impossible (between work and mortgage, josh cant make all the events he'd like to go to).

to be sure, technical skills are an important part of twirler development however i would find it difficult to remain interested in twirling as an art form unless i had experiences where i can camp out surrounded by so many people so passionate about twirling and tiddly winx.

At a time when so much of twirling can seem homogenised, such inspiration is essential. 'specially when ed takes his top off.

It's OK. I'm not gonna get upset about being a porn depriving driver of the capitalist alienation machine meditate

And can you send me a Marty for the weekend, Josh, that man ROCKS!! My kitchen floor has been gleaming ever since he came to stay. What a honey!

I really look forward to Common Ground. Doing NOTHING (well almost) for three days is a good payoff for having to wageslave to pay the airfares wink

Only this year I'm a student too .. eep, I'll have to wonder about how it all fits with Uni assignments like the rest of the kiddies!

I'd like to offer a workshop on how to teach/run workshops.

tentage shouldn't be an issue. There are always communal spaces that can be used for crashage - however as I said, tentage shouldnt be an issue.

MCP, I'm happy to bring a spare tent. I've got 3 and I'll only be using one, and it would be great bragging rights to say that Meg slept in my tent, even if it was a different one from mine, that's a detail that can be left out. I learnt all my contact and double staff from your site, so I owe you.

Just shirk it... I'm supposed to be helping my father set up for his wedding which is the weekend after CG... (He's damn lucky he didn't call it the week before or his "best man" would be a no show... lol)

ugh... how rude are family? I still haven't made it to CG and it's not looking good this year either... missed it last year, cos it was the same weekend as my sister's wedding; wouldn't you think they'd have the good manners to clear it with us all, first? tongue

wooo! well we've had a few meetings and bought some stuff and its coming together really well! I think this year's CG is going to be the most beautiful (in lots o' ways wink) ever!!! smile we've got some really good ideas for fun workshops and other shenannagans for people to get up to....I'm a bit overexcited about some of the stuff. I have to distract myself with mundane things like uni assignments and work to calm down a bit...speaking of which...better get back to it hehe
