Heya guys!

For any of you who've studied japanese [or chinese for that matter], i'm sure you've encountered the madness that is kanji.. for those who haven't, kanji are pictorial characters representing words.

the best way i've found to learn these characters is to come up with a creative description of what it looks like, and relate this to the meaning. which means that we can actually make it into a game and help some fellow hoppers learn some difficult characters!

** you don't have to have any knowledge of the language to play - often those who haven't seen the characters before are actually able to be more creative with their interpretations! **

so, the idea is i'll post some characters and see who comes up with the most creative/easy to remember meaning for the kanji pictures! biggrin

this is pronounced 'utsu' [the top part is the kanji, the bottom is the rest of the word 'tsu'], meaning 'to strike' - the japanese equivalent of typing on a keyboard.

Not sure if this'll help, but maybe if it was written in very un-decorative style, it might help? like imagine writing it with either horizontal or vertical lines?

Perhaps remember by number of strokes too?

e.g.

yasai = roughly 10, 11

But mm.. crossed legged guy next to his wife, and a plant (roots, mid bit, bloom..)?

The second one looks like someones shocked face, like another person is about to 'strike' them... biggrin

Yasai is 21 strokes, Utsu is only 6 smile.

For utsu I'd say it looks like a person sitting at a desk, and then the second symbol is just the character tsu so thats where my brain goes next... not *as* useful, I admit!

Not that either of these were Kanji I knew, so... yay for this game smile

I still don't know yasai tho. Thats gonna take some memorizing....

gah. My mandarin's disgustingly lousy, but I'll tell you for a fact that's more decorative than it needs to look, or looks when you write it out with a ballpoint pen. tongue

Time is passing (on a boat). The left and bottom thing is the boat.. the thing on the boat is a clock on a table. Timecheck 3.30. Threethirtyitis.. ubblol like the ad.

Also, if you forget how to draw the boat, the left bit looks like a 3.

Oracle, that has too many strokes for me to even look it up in my kanji dictionary!!

Ry, my mandarin is sh!t'ouse wink
but i find that's interesting because i generally find typed characters to be LESS fancy! because they are minus the little "brush strokes" that we were always told to imitate in highschool (when we werent allowed to write in ballpoint pen and had to write in pencil!)

i would have changed ***** to phallus, and claire to petey Petey

Hey, that's a cool game! Kinda reminds me of the Heisig book ^_~

Gotta love those Kanji #-/

To "fune":

I think the left part looks a lot like a rigging and the right part like a man climbing it (upside down?????) okay. so that's probably not helpful... :/

fune..

left part is a sail and a mast. The (almost) horizontal line is the boom. The two dashes on the 'sail' are the wind pushing the sail.

I imagine the top stroke as either the outline of another sail, or sunshine. Former's better I think.

Thing on the right is a a face going ahhh. Happy to have a breeze. biggrin

yeah, but if you have it any less decorative than that, you can't see which direction the strokes go in properly tongue and i can still read the letters of finish or welsh if it has serifs on it even if i don't know what it means *blows raspberry*

and yes lou, i think you'd be right in saying that insane one's chinese... i've seen it before, i can't for the life of me tell you what it is though.
