Wow does there ever seem to be alot of people from Calgary.
After spending this past weekend at the Connect X festival in Saskatchewan, I've developed an interrest in learning poi. Anyone mind of a newbie joins them in practice?

I'm in the southwest, down near WestHills shopping center. I also have another friend who lives within walking distance of Sandy Beach in fish creek park. We were actually thinking of going down there to practice some spinning.

where are you?

Its cold? It was 30 degrees there last week! And it is about that here this week( west coast) . Hmmn. Maybe you are comparing it to Texas?
Welcome! Sorry I missed you. I was just there, but back home now.
Good luck getting settled

Yeah, it is actually fairly mild here.
But... when you come from 98 deg Texas heat, it's pretty chilly here.
We'll get used to it- hopefully pretty quickly!

Welcome to Calgary!
The weather can be really uh.. interesting, here. Mostly I find it inconsistent, so it can be a little tricky to get used to. Heck, I've been here for 6 years and still haven't really gotten used to it *grin*

If there is anything you want to know about the city, please feel free to ask. Post, pm, email whatever, I'll do the best I can to help out. wink

Well, it turned out that Friday was just one random cold day.
Or maybe yesterday was just one random really hot day.
Or maybe the weather really is a bit wacky up here.

Thanks Drayce. We've actually got a few friends up here- one of whom we're currently staying with- who are showing us around.

biggrin

Haven't been here in a while.....sorry. I'm in the NW. I usually practice at Princes Island or Bowness park ('cause it's close). We should figure out a day for all of us to get together somewhere...
...soon....before the snow.

Blayze- someone we met up here mentioned that a lot of people spin at a park on Sunday night. I'll find out which one and PM you (when they get back from burning man).
Yes, spinning will have to be done before the snow and the cold. smile

Hey everybody,
I can't believe what a nutter I am. I've spun in Riley park a couple of times in the last two weeks, but I never see anyone else (except the people who come up to me and tell me they have friends who spin). Let me know what time you're planning on heading out, and I'll be there on Sunday for sure!

Hi there, anybody want to be part of the Great Canadian Poi Adventure?

My little brother, a video artist, and myself are traveling coast to coast, leaving on the 15th of september. I'll be teaching workshops in a bunch of cities, and we're generally looking to make friends and have adventures. Dates/places are posted on playpoi.com.

Just thought I'd letcha know.

For anyone in 2 minds about doing one of Nicks workshops... do it!
I've only ever met Nick once, at uberpoi, but found him to be very patient and an excellent teacher.
In one workshop (45 mins or so?), he gave me enough stuff to work on to last a good many years of poi spinning- things I wish I'd been taught as a beginner.
I'm incredibly sad that I fly out of Calgary the day before Nick arrives, so won't be able to attend his workshop... believe me, I will be making the journey out to one of his poi retreats.
Please make him feel welcome in Calgary!

Oh, and, for anyone in Calgary who's interested...
We're going spinning tonight at Princes Island Park. There will be me, Spitfire, Blue48.... and maybe Blayze?
So (as long as it doesn't rain), bring your fire toys, your glow toys, or anything else you'd rather play with ( eek ).
We'll be there from 8pm. (Well, 8ish- we have to find our way there without getting lost first!)

Well, last night was lots of fun, and the first time I've spun fire in a few months. biggrin
The really light sprinkling of rain did good to keep us cool, and stopped whilst we played with fire.
I'm definitely going to be there on Sunday. biggrin

I feel sad I just found this thread now...

I was in spinning Kananaskis all by my lonesome for a year and a half and then I leave for a year and all you spinners materialize in Calgary!
Bah.

I'll get together with y'all when I come back-- catch a ride into Calgary and stay with my sister for a night or two.

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Nove - When are you coming back? More people to spin with is always a good thing!

Blayze - Glad to have finally met you. Hope you had fun with the fire; somehow I missed actually seeing you spin...

It was good to finally meet everyone on Sunday!
Blue - I left right after I saw you spin (you're awesome by the way). Erin and I were frozen, so i didn't stay to spin...although lighting myself on fire would have warmed me up. smile
I have so much to learn from you all! redface
Sorry all for being somewhat anti-social....I promise I'm not a snob...just shy!
Hope to see you all at the workshops this weekend!

I had great fun on Sunday night (despite the cold! eek ).
There was a good atmosphere, people were friendly, and the drummers made spinning a whole lot more enjoyable. smile

Blayze- I still have to figure out who you are. I know I blinded you with my headtorch when I was hunting for my fuel (sorry redface ), but didn't really get a chance to chat with you.

Well, as from Saturday, I'm away on travels for the next 2 weeks. But after that I'll be back at the park, with 50 layers on, and as much fire as possible to keep me warm! biggrin

Blayze,
Thanks so much! I'm still pretty self-conscious when I spin with fire, so that means a lot.

See you all (except Mand frown) Saturday!
