While I've been out of the poi scene for a bit now, I still love it and try to keep it in my mind. An opportunity came up for some possible cross-pollination between different "skill objects", so I couldn't resist putting something together. I noticed some people just started a discussion at the end of the TT2 thread about how different props make different tricks possible. That was in reference to fire vs glowstick vs poi, but I'm going to go out a bit further afield.

Last month was the 2004 World Yo-yo Contest, and for those of you that don't know, one of the styles of yo-yo play (AA) has quite a large overlap with poi. If you have a yo-yo on each hand, sleeping at the end of the string, swinging it around, that basically IS poi, while also having the option to retrack and rethrow it at any time and various other kinds of tricks that are only possible with yo-yos (for instance, certain kinds of wraps only work because you unwrap one string while the other yo-yo is retracting, giving room for the string to pass).

What I decided to do (while also using this opportunity to re-learn Premiere after a bunch of years), was create a video which condensed everyone's freestyles down to the tricks that are either totally possible with normal poi or might be translated if someone gets creative enough.

Click here to download the video (don't right-click this link to save it.. click it first and do that on the following page).

It is about 4 minutes long and is 35megs. It is encoded in XviD. You can get that codec here or it should also work if you have DivX 5.0 installed.

Let me know what you think and if you find any of the moves interesting! If enough people are interested, I could also make this availible using Bittorrent. But BT works better if a lot of people want it, so I dunno if the demand is enough?

Happy Spinning!

Yeah, there's a lot of great players in Japan. They do well in all the divisions, but especially the two-handed looping. For the record, John Ando lives in Texas, though he can speak Japanese. smile Patrick Mitchell is from the US and Geigle is from Germany I believe...

Urology, the guy from Pro-yo was Yohans, the son of the owner of Playmaxx (makers of Pro-yo). Playmaxx was actually sold to Duncan a while back. That combined with Steve Brown coming on board who added charisma and good ideas and new yo-yos has pretty much turned Duncan around into a company that serious players actually like again.

BTW, if anyone wants to see some of the full freestyles, you can see the top three in each division at The Glass Lab (scroll all the way down to the Observational Footage heading). The poi stuff is in the Double A division, but be sure to check out some of the others to see some different styles...

Single A is with one yo-yo and doing complex tricks with the string and yo-yo. Triple A is the same but with two yo-yos at once. Offstring has the yo-yo not connected to the string, with tricks a lot a diabolo. 5a has a small weight (like a cancelled casino die or a bouncy ball) that you hold in your hand (and can throw in various ways) instead of having the string attached to your finger. AP is judged purely on artistic merit.

Also, a great 17minute overview of the Worlds experience is on the same page I linked above, but under the Singapore header, marked Worlds 2004. There's also a shorter but very good video made by one of the Japenese players here. Yet another good one from a Brazillian player here. This has really been the year for clip videos...

But back on topic of poi-ish stuff. One interesting thing is that wraps where the weight of the poi actually hits your body are very difficult with yo-yos, since that really kills the spin. A couple of people did some simple arm wraps that way, but I didn't put them in my video since it wouldn't seem that impressive to people used to watching glowstick videos..haha

But that is why the rope-dart-ish wraps became really popular early on. I saw yo-yo people doing neck wraps and the turning arm wraps and stuff before I saw it really happening in poi. But those are also a bit harder with shorter string, which is more common with the poi. Though nowadays I think some poi people use longer but wrap around the hands for some tricks?

I don't know who was first with the air wrap / tangler / hyper loop stuff. Probably the poi people, though it seems it started happening around the same time, though it only started being used extensively in actual freestyles for yo-yos in the last year or so...

I'm curious, how much of the stuff in the video has anyone seen already? I've been kind of out of the loop besides seeing some of the glowstick.com and tekno turtles vids a while back. Hiraku's behind the back tangler (last trick) was pretty much what really inspired me to make the video in the first place. Has that been done already?

Cheers!

First of all - thank you very much for the video. Very very nice job !
To answer your question: The trick you are talking about at the end is the behind the back tangled buzzsaw, played to the side. Has been done already but dont know many players who do it, or play it clean.
The only thing that i personally disliked (from my Poi perspective) is the cleanliness of the "Poi-Elements". I think it is ****** hard to do these things with Yoyos, but in my oppinion the beauty of these lies within its clean parallel/splittime effect. I personally would prefer to see more of the clean stuff than the extreme "tangle-turning" wink
Is there any Glowing Yoyo footage somewhere ? Really would be interested in the nighttime effect of Double A Yoyo.

Thanks again !

Really inspiring video

andy,

That is a good point. I've seen some slow nicely formed regular weaves and such done with yo-yos in the past, but there's some factors going against it in this case.

First is the fact that it is a contest performance. While people generally want to do stuff that looks nice and gets the crowd going to a certain degree, the judging is mostly on the difficulty and number of the tricks (and even the audience is mostly players themselves and so know the difficulty of various stuff), so there is more incentive to do as much physically hard stuff as fast as possible to rack up the points. I think when people are doing demos for the public, it tends to be more clean and eye-pleasing.

As you mentioned, the nature of the yo-yos is a factor too, in some ways. The long sleep times that ball-bearings brought enabled more poi-ish tricks, but they still only sleep so long before running out of spin. So if you go faster, you can get more stuff in before having to catch or regenerate (where the yo-yo comes back and outward again without catching, which adds spin again).

Actually, though, "looping" where the yo-yos retract and unwind constantly in an oval path is kind of the normal mode of two-handed, so that part tends to be where the focus of smoothness and symmetry happens (and I didn't put too much of that into my video), with the poi-ish moves added in as flourishes. Then again, that seems like it is changing lately with more wraps being integrated into the performances. But we're still at the stage where things can be a bit rough in a competition as long as they are innovative. If the growth settles down a bit, then I'd predict things will clean up a bit more.
