My own are pretty boring... rolleyes

The pair I made for girlfriend for christmas are beautifull ubblove

They're wood and have complex celtic / tribal pattern burnt all over the exposed wood using a soldering iron (hours of fun frown but worth it biggrin ). Then they are varnished and sanded for a finish. The ends near the wicks are covered with aluminium tape.

The grip is made out of green and red hemp string. I didn't have the time or the expertise at the time, but I'm going to carve away the handle so that the string is fluch with the rest of the wood.

my sticks (wot i hardly ever use cos i don't know how they work) were made by one mr blackass of scotsedinburghland.

i stripped them, sanded them, spray-painted them with matt black oven paint and gripped with bicycle inner tubes.

decoration on these black beauties is minimal - red insulating tape on one, white tape on the other.

will be switching the red tape to white (with more stripes along the length this time rather than just to secure the grip and to mark a centrepoint) after their next respray smile

guess i should probably burn them one day... ubbangel

I like the non-ravey style on my staff...so I just have brown and black leather nicely woven together by my girlfriend - looks beautiful, and the leather is really nice to spin with! Only trouble is it is hard to see for throws in the dark...............................

I don't have a practice single staff, but do for my doubles:

they are painted red and yellow, with glitter sparkly paint over the top redface
and have red and yellow ribbons on the ends

I think they are pretty to use for daylight stuff

I dont really practice with my practice staff but my fire staff has groovey bright pink holographic tape on it just either side of the handle. But reading all the cool things you've done with your staffs i may have to find my old broomstick and decorate it biggrin

On a slightly different note; is there any way to get rid of the horrid black soot stains on an aluminium staff? Getting the excess soot off is easy but it still leaves yukky stains, any tips?

ysee i tried the burning thing when i made my staffs. broom handles varnished and leather bound. i wanted to get some patterns and went as far as designing the celtic or aztec patterns i wanted but the soldering iron just would not burn the wood!!
seriously i tried for ages.
i thought you need a special burny tool clearly i just have a sub standard soldering iron

my original signature was tooo long.
this one is shorter

yeah,

you get special 'pens' for burning work, they are hotter than soldering irons and have a finer tip. If you get a good soldering iron they are hot enough, but they are more expensive.

I can't remember how much mine was but it was cheap, less than 10 euros. I don't know what to say, you shouldn't be having ia problem, if it's made for melting metal, then surely if it can't burn wood it must be broken?

What kind of wood is it? Maybe if it's a harder wood, it might explain it?
