anyone know of an internet site that has rope dart lessons? I really wanna learn how to do this art it seems like it would be alot of fun when mastered. For Mech:

The kick with the dart on the ground:
Pull the rope in into a loop and so there's some tension in the rope between your hand and the dart
Stamp down with your toes on the rope near the dart so the dart flicks back on to your foot - try and make this move as quick as possible
Quick flick kick to send it out smile

"Wrong-leg" Wrap (I assume you mean this one):
Er, like a normal ankle/leg wrap, but with your leg behind you wink

I started practicing rope dart again the other day. Getting pretty good i think
Anyway for those of you who are interested in the VCD form the Beijing Wushu Team Training Video Series, Video 9 - Rope Dart, heres a kinda bit of a review for it

The video is good as it demonstrates clearly most of the techniques that are in the mpgs available on the net, and combinations can be created from these.
However; the vcds are copies of 1980s??? series, so the quality isnt too good. It is kinda difficult to follow the movement of the rope, but if you have a decent idea of the rotational movement of the rope dart, as most poi practitioners should, you will be able to follow it.

Heres a list of the different techniques shown in the vcd:

Release dart while running
Release dart from elbow (2 different techniques)
Release dart under leg
Release dart from neck
Back wrap and release dart (like what jackie chan does in shanghai noon)
Elbow and neck wrap combination
Release dart over back (in a few of the mpgs in earlier posts.)
Leg wrap and release dart with foot (scissor kick type thing discussed earlier)
Neck wrap and release to back
And an entire rope dart routine, shown movement by movement.

If i didnt feel a need to support the people creating these vcds, so that more vcds of this type can be produced, i would upload some clips from the vcd, but we would all love more rope dart instruction wouldnt we.

The vcd can be purchased from https://www.thewushucentre.ca

now that you have single neck wrap down, go for the double. When you get the double, you can start to move and turn more, all while still in a neck wrap. loox nyshe..Do you have thru wraps down yet? If not, try a search on thru wraps, there has been alot of discussion on these boards about those.

I wonder if there are any books on rope dart? I've seen books for other chinese weapons forms, it would be cool if there's one for this too.

Soft Weapons - Nine Section Whip and Rope Dart, by Li Keqin and Li Xingdong. smile That's a start. You should be able to order it on the web.

Without sounding disrespectful, I really can't see what all the fuss is about, I introduced myself to rope dart down in cornwall curtesy of Mechs rather well manufactured nicely weighted and suitably long impliment, which i rather wanted to purchase, and was unfortunately not for sale, well, i make most of (all) of my own tools, so one over sized rope dart was promptly added to the build list, have made several for other local peeps,

As for safety aspects, yes, well, i learnt very quickly that this wasn't something i wanted to get in the way of durring throws or really any other kind of manipulation, a rather heavy head travelling at speed on the end of 15 foot of rope is not something you want to be stood in the way of. Well, if anyone wants basic input on dart, i might even be able to dig out some vid footage, send me a pm or something,

sorry if this is off topic here but just saw this thread and couldnt be bothered to read all of it
my friend has been learning kung fu for 7 or 8 years and is very good with his rope dart his is something stupidly long like three times his body length because of the style he does or something, but my god he's good at wat he can do with it.....this takes masive dedication to the martial art aswell as to learning to use this weapon, i would definatly recommend learning kung fu to anyone though, most enjoyable and quite interesting cultural wise aswell

also been thinking about a new move i want to try, if you grab the head of your dart and take your hand to the opposite shoulder and throw the dart behind you back as hard and straight as you can, and when you let go turn to follow the dart and line, then it should look arther nice!

There's a smidgen of rope dart here. Well, chain actually. And it's basically spinning it in two planes then a clumsy arm wrap thing sending it shooting out about 3 feet...

confused2

not impressed...

But the other stuff is quite cool... tonfa and kama, HI-YAH!

They are guides. They are teachers. They are like Yoda, only smaller and on strings.

Not that I mean any dis-respect to that school, but those weapon demonstrations are pretty shabby..
and they can't spell "section" right (9-session / 3-session staff ?!!)

Joss - That's chain-whip (or 9-section staff), not rope dart smile
I have one of those too, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal if I take it out in public. Lots of fun though.

Not too sure myself about the legality of those in public, it's probably not something you'd want to be caught with, however if it's obviously part of a collection of 'performance art' kit rather than something secreted in a pocket, your effective changing the context, my 9 section chain whip lives with a collection of throwing knives and other 'art' props with my fire tools, I'm only guesing this since I've never had a problem, but then as previously requested, I usally put a call through to the local police when we're going out for a practise session.
