Going from poi to glowsticks?

I already do poi and have been excelling at it, I decided to try my own at glowsticks and ordered a couple of pairs from HoP. Exactly how hard is it transitioning from poi to glowsticks. What kind of things are the hardest and are good to practice and what is pretty much the same. And other that very obvious things, what doesn't work or doesn't look that good with glowsticks that works well with poi? Sorry if I reposted, but I searched and didn't find anything. Fire will still be my favorite though

unless you weight the glowsticks with tape or something you won't be able to do very clean stalls with them, same goes for isolations and the likes. All the basic weaves and flowers should be fine though. Glowsticks definitely spin much faster, and are a lot more useful for doing technical wraps and catches. You could always get a pair of camping glowsticks from a local store, tie em up with shoestrings and try it out (if you don't feel like waiting for shipping) just check out some glowstringing vids on youtube or go to http://www.glowsticking.com for more help. have fun!

I've tried it, I don't like it too much, but what I think it would be nice to know is for it's portability compared to poi. I got them, I think they look nice, but I'm not too fond of the style.

I started with glow sticks and just got my first set of Sock LED Poi about two weeks ago. Comparatively I feel much more comfortable with them and have been able to advance my skills a lot faster with the socks. Also I've taken some hard hits from both and must say the Poi hurt far less then the glow sticks.

I started with glowsticks a while back and I like poi better. That's just my personal preference. I like how poi is heavier and can go slower w/o falling. Sticks are easier to carry around but after years of doing it I'm a bigger fan or my LED balls from HoP.

I just started doing glowsticks, I personally like poi better. But I love how easy they are to carry around and my goal is too get decent at it before prom Get Some ultra's and normal glowstick handles. And when the ultra's run out, if they want to continue I could stitch to the normal ones or bring more ultras

recommend getting flowtoys with crystal cases, they have bit of wieght to them(more if you get flowmass) so they still feel like poi but their shape allows you to to all the techy fast glowstick wrap/catch/string manipulation moves as well:)

true, recommend getting them as soon as you can though, they are VERY durable-i got my first flowlights 3years ago and they still work perfectly (and they use rechargable batteries which saves you $$$ over those button cells), expensive at first but it pays off, i wasted well over $100 on cheap glowtoys which broke or eventually stopped working before I found flowtoys, havn't looked back since

Sounds like fun actually. I've thought about it. BUt I can't do it in Detroit in fear of getting mugged or shot or something.
I could do it at the park maybe?
Where do you generally do that kind of stuff. I've actually never seen someone busking here before, probably because no one walks anywhere. I don't know why, but for almost everyone here, walking somewhere is like asking for death. Even ask a runner and they'll be like, "Pfft! Walk? Why would I do that?"

did you see the thread about ultra thin photon leds put in a emptied glowstick? and they have batteries that last 15 hours continuously

Around here folks do it at a couple of the well-placed parks, near the larger shopping centers or theaters downtown, on the strip near the university, in front of grocery stores... Anywhere with a lot of people (preferably wealthier ones) coming and going and spending money (spending = pocket change). You wouldn't do it late at night, but during the evening rush is usually a good time. I guess if Detroit is really that dangerous I'd find somewhere that matches this description in the suburbs, but usually the danger is exaggerated. NYC is full of buskers, so they find a way. With any sufficiently large city it's not a question of whether that city is safe, but which parts. Different areas have different income brackets, different police presence, etc., so you might want to do some research and use your discretion. And more likely, instead of mugging you someone will just take your hat

Lately, I've seen what essentially amount to battery operated glowsticks that are intended to be safety lights for joggers at night (I think). They sell for $2-4 each at places like Target.
The ones that I saw had two modes, solid and flashing, come with a built in lanyard/string and are also whistles (I saw someone spin with them and they don't whistle while you spin).
I'd say that they are a decent investment for anyone looking into glowsticking.

I found an amazing deal on glowsticks, recommended to me by Ascilith. http://www.glowwithus.com You can buy them on wholesale for like 50 cents each. I just bought 50, including the shipping cost it came out to 74 cents each. And I'm finally getting into it. It's pretty damn fun. It's pretty damn challenging at first, but it's fun on a bun That massive amount of sticks should be getting her in a day according to UPS. And in a couple hours, I learned arm wraps, leg wraps, side bicep wraps, neck wrap, double bicep wraps, alternate arm wraps, wallplane bicep wraps, and doing many of those while reaching behind me. At this rate I should be pretty good by prom and also very pissed if they don't let me do it or kick me out.

HOP have something similar (led light stick, seems to be only solid, no whistle) for AU $1.84 each, less for bulk. http://www.homeofpoi.com/shop/productDetails/Single-LED-light-stick-with-CordAs they don't seem to have made it to Target in regional Aus yet I'm going to get 10 in my next order, to hand out to people next New Year's eve. It'll be something to give those who "want a go" with my flowpoi.

I've played with those things before, very lightweight and not very bright, recommend glowsticks instead to be honest:/

I have those, they aren't painful but they're very light and break in like 2 seconds. I currently use them for practice and they're covered in tape to make them not break. Also the string they come with are really short and sting and tangle up a lot and get caught because you have to do a one know at the end thing to lengthen them. I just ran a shoelace through the thing.

I was hoping for something with less environmental impact but given they come with disposable batteries glowsticks might be better/ SpinnerO'D, are the ones you have also significantly duller than glowsticks?

Yes, the HoP glowstrings are quite duller than glowsticks. And they also stopped working after being hit together a couple of times, they cracked and it made the battery compartment not completely tight or something so it doesn't light up anymore. One of them does but they go out at random. They may be cheap, but they're not worth it because they last about as long as a normal glowstick before they break

To add, last night I discovered the song Everytime We Touch by Cascada. And I'm getting my glowsticks in today so I didn't have them. So I grabbed some unopened HoP gliwsticks that I found. They were about as bright as normal glowsticks actually. But one just wanted to turn off every now and then pretty much out of the package. And they make an annoying plastic sound, they are too light and don't carry their momentum very well. I'd say the best thing abut them is that they don't hurt unless they don't hit you're knuckles, they can be reused as long as they don't break, and they're slightly cheaper than normal glowsticks from the store.

think jameth was meaning ultras (a type of super glowstick thats really bright but shortlived) hyperlights will cost a fortune but if they live up to the massive development time they'll be worth the wait... as a side note you can actually boost the glow of regular glowsticks a bit by popping them in the microwave for about 15s just before you use them

Yes, I was referring to ultraglowsticks: hyperlight poi are a bit beyond me. Glowsticks will glow brighter if you heat them, it doesn't matter how you do it: if you don't want to microwave them you can stick them in hot water for a while (a thermos can be good for beaches and woods). The chemical reaction that makes the glow runs faster and therefore brighter when the chemicals are hotter (also they won't last as long).

I just got my glowsticks today, I cracked my very first pair of 6" glowsticks, they were harder to crack than I thought. They were also much brighter than I expected. They a don't hurt at all, I had a couple 3" glowsticks I got from Skateland and those babies stung like a mother And now I know that the HoP ones are quite duller for sure. These were significantly brighter and much heavier. Ascilith, these are good quality glowsticks. I'd say buy these from now on. They're only 54 cents each btw I got assorted colors which is sweet. And I'm very glad I got individually packaged because the yellow and green, and white and blue look near the same and I only ended up with 2 unlabeled ones. I can't wait to do this in public and for people Oh god, once we have a track party, I am being noticed. It will be such a surprise because I'm like that really quiet guy that only talks to certain people. Tomorrow or the day after I will make my 1 week glowstringing video because that's when I actually started practicing it.
