Are you a confident Twirler? Belly Dancer? Juggler? or just like to Entertain? Are you ready for the spot light? Here is your chance.... Pier 35 @ Melbourne Docklands will erupt for the Victorian Pool and Spa Associations Gala of the Year. A prestigious event featuring spectacular water front veiws and gormet dining. You'll be impressed by the level of sophistication and class, and bored out of your mind with the ceremony and awards... Thats why we need YOU! We need to turn this somewhat conservative doo into a FIREY FANTASIA Ideally I would like to gather a number of individual fire twirlers (both poi and staff) or a group performance, a couple of EXTREME jugglers, hell even some sword swallowing should surely wake the party up! Rather than a stage act, I see the dining room a light with twirlers and dancers taking to the floor, dazzling and hypnotising the audience with an up close fire experience. Wages will be negotiated depending on the number of hours and experience. If you have what it takes, then I want to hear from you! There are only a couple of weeks of organising left... dont miss out on your chance to be a STAR! Contact by email: jade.ferriere@hotmail.com

Hmmmm.. Can you give a specific date please? Im currently in Melbourne right now, but im travelling to Sydney and Brisbane too. I leave Australia on the 27th of November. Ive been spinning sticks and poi for 5 years in the UK, juggling for 3. Also, will there be Melbourne Shufflers there? Just a thought though- whats the lowdown on safety? Are you providing spotters, fire extinguishers and fire blankets? Are you providing fuel? Will there be a medical team onsite incase of a mishap?

hey, chris and myself (jamie) would be very keen to do a show!! Apart from fire i play with contact balls, juggling balls and do hat manipulation. chris currently performs in a four person show with 'cirque mystique' and we are currently working together on some of our own routines incorporating comdey, dance, acrobalance and lots of fire including staff, short doubles, contact staff, contact doubles, triple staff, poi and fire eating. chris is also working on four long staff but i dont think he is ready for fire yet.

Monkey, is Mr Ex-Shaolin calling us slobs?
Anyway, I'd like to draw everyones attention to This thread, but particularly Vyvyans and Knoxious' first posts.
After reading that thread a while back, and realising the implications of performing for free, I decided never to perform for free again, unless it is for family, friends who are fire twirlers, or charity.
Fyre_Magik, you are yet to answer my question about whether or not fuel will be provided by you, yet you answer my other questions, I dont know if this was intentional or not.
You say:
Written by: Fyre_Magik
Victorian Pool and Spa Associations Gala of the Year. A prestigious event featuring spectacular water front veiws and gormet dining. You'll be impressed by the level of sophistication and class....
Wages will be negotiated depending on the number of hours and experience...
and you then go on to say:
Written by: Fyre_Magik
I would like to encourage some amateur twirlers interested in doing the show for FREE / to gain experience
So what do you want?
Crap amatures (in general that is,( Brenn and Tumblehat, this is not suggesting you are crap)) who will perform for free...and be crap, or do you want organised professionals who will leave everyone talking about them for the rest of the night and remembering what an amazing show was put on, but who you have to pay?
In my opinion (and which I know to be the opinion of other professional fire twirlers), by giving away your services for free to organisations who blatantly have the money to pay for peoples time, you are simply ruining other professionals livelihoods as these organisations will not pay for people to do well, what others will do not nearly as well, but who will do it for free.
By getting amatures to perform in Written by: Fyre_Magik
an up close fire experience
you are putting the spectators at risk from a) being sprayed in fuel b)serious injury or c) possible death.
Well, I suppose if you dont want to hire professionals who will make the specators remember what they saw, you could always hire amatures who would make the spectators remember how someone got seriously hurt.
But you can tell them not to worry as you didnt have to pay the performers anyway.
Ok, apparently SPASA is a "not-for-profit organisation" which "is made up of pool builders, manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, technical servicemen, sub-contractors, installers, consultants and other allied trades"
Hmmm.. its seems one of you have the dates wrong perhaps?
"Pool & Spa Expo is on again Feb 2007
Annually held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre Southbank.
2nd - 4th February 2007"
Unless they are having one now, and one again in Feburary because everyone needs an excuse to get in a hot tub with hot chicks in bikinis
Or im just getting galas confused with expos?

yo yo chill out dude!!!! you should check your facts first..there is no way we would do somthing like this for free!!! its true freee performers would simply be undercutting the market which is exactly what performers do not need to happen!

Yes UCOF I imagine you are mixing your expos with your galas. typical This is a long standing discussion re payment/freebies/payment in kind for all musos and artists... it is one I have an interest in from both sides; performers and organisers. The bit that worries me with this one is the 'up close' ness. There is not only the skill of the fire spinners/jugglers to consider, but the random behaviour of audience, who no doubt will have been drinking...and up for potentially ghastly 'laughs'

This an email I got back from Jade with some more details like times and stuff. Make of it what you will
----------------------------------------
Brendan,
You sound great! I was hoping to hear from some more amateur twirlers like
yourself. Unfortunately our budget is limited for this event so I was hoping
that if I could get a couple of amateur twirlers, I could supply the
firewater and safety equipment in return for your time. If this is OK with
you, then we will organise a time to meet. I am just confirming a couple of
other people with the hope that we could all gather at the venue to give us
a visual and idea of how the night will run.
Again, if this all suites you then drop me an email when you have the chance
and I will keep you updated on when we shall look to meet.
Details of Event:
November 10th 20006
Watermark Bar - Docklands, Melbourne
(It is a relatively small venue, outside with standing room on the edge of
the warf)
Starting @ 7pm there will be a band playing through until 10:15pm.
Now it is up to you how much time you wish to donate.
You can arrive at 9pm do a 15-30min show, then enjoy some finger food and
the band, before another show at 10:15pm or alternatively arrive in time to
do one 15-30 min show at 10:15pm only. Its completely up to you.
Finger food and nibblies will be provided which you are more than welcome to
enjoy through out the night.
Well have a think about it and if you are interested I really look forward
to hearing from you.
Talk soon, Cheers
Jade

A 30- 60 minute show in a tiny, undefined space for a few dollars worth of fuel, a wet towel and a sandwich?
I rest my case.
Oh hang on, do you get to keep the leftover fuel? Now that could be a bargain (at $4 a litre)

I also recieved an email back from Jade, he/she didnt like the sound of how much experience i had. Now i understand why. I have started a post and please read it before taking any gigs http://www.homeofpoi.com/ubbthreads/show...rt/1#Post728291 Because of some problems it is causing us. Anyways, if there are performers there that are not getting paid i will not perform. I am standing up to all of the organisations that will not pay for our services. Jai.

UmbiliciformCraterOnFace Thank you so much for your ever experienced words of wisdom. SPASA VIC is a NON for PROFIT Organisation - Not a high turn over, corporate organisation as you so diligently put it: Written by:
"organisations who blatantly have the money to pay for peoples time"
I have a contact in the company that asked if I could assist with locating a couple of fire performers in Melbourne. I myself had only had a month or so experience when she first saw me twirling which caught her interest. Being relatively new to Fire Dancing I was very happy to stumble upon this website, providing a means to shop, chat and meet new people. So when she asked if I could investigate on her behalf I thought “No problem, I will put a post up and see the responses I get”
Initially I was informed that the performers would be paid for their time. Hence my first post. However, since recently sitting down with the organisers to the discuss budget, I was informed that the quotes I had received were well outside of this.
For this reason I rectified my initial post to state:
Written by:
"twirlers interested in doing the show for FREE / to gain experience "
This does not LIMIT people responding to AMATEUR’s, rather, people that enjoy performing and are happy to donate their time. I know that a number of people that have responded have a number of years experience with group or individual acts. For these people the LOVE to perform is sometimes greater than their NEED for money.
I myself will be performing on the night. With only a few months experience twirling , my first aid Cert and fire safety training, you have to start somewhere. And I hope that this gig will provide an opportunity for people who have been wanting to put their practice to use and entertain people, but not wanting to do it as a professional career.
In response to your to your slander:
Written by:
"you are yet to answer my question about whether or not fuel will be provided by you, yet you answer my other questions"
I responded to your question on the 16th of October:
Written by:
"Fire blankets and extinguishers will be provided on site for safety requirements. Currently looking further into a medical team or St John Team."
So you want to know what I REALLY WANT…
Fire Performers interested in donating 30mins – 1hr of there time. To perform @
Watermark Bar – Melbourne Docklands November 10th 2006: FYI - the Spa EXPO has NOTHING to do with this GALA!
Out door, standing venue. Performers have the option of performing one or two gigs:
Join us @ 9pm for a 15-30 min show, then enjoy some finger food and live band before starting the Finale @ 10:15pm for another 15-30 min show.
Or Alternatively, come along at 10pm to join us for the Finale of the night for a 15-30 min show. Before the venue turns into a night club at 11pm.
A meeting will be scheduled prior to the event for performers to meet at the venue to familiarise themselves with the floor layout and size. Firewater, and safety equipment will be provided on the night. Finger food and non alcoholic beverages will also be available for entertainers.
I appreciate that for professional performers time is money. So I apologise for any inconvenience my first post may have caused. For future reference I will be sure to have all of the info before I jump online.
For those of you who feel this event is Destined for DANGER and DISASTER feel free to join UmbiliciformCraterOnFace’s campaign against it!
But for those of you who have been waiting for a break, here’s your chance to put that practice to use. Not professional, but confident? Send me an email jade.ferriere@hotmail.com
Finally, Thank you to all who have responded. I apologise if I have not gotten back to you personally, I am working my way through the emails slowly but gradually.

I really dont want to start this turning into something unfriendly.
So everything I say here, is in a passive tone of voice. Not anger or annoyance.
Written by: Fyre_Magik
SPASA VIC is a NON for PROFIT Organisation - Not a high turn over, corporate organisation as you so diligently put it: Written by: Me
"organisations who blatantly have the money to pay for peoples time"
Ahem, I also wrote, after I bothered to go and find out about SPASA on their website, that:
Written by: me
Ok, apparently SPASA is a "not-for-profit organisation" which "is made up of pool builders, manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, technical servicemen, sub-contractors, installers, consultants and other allied trades"
See. I said that. I see that they are a "not-for-profit organisation". Thats why I said that.
Secondly:
Written by: Fyre_Magik
In response to your to your slander:
Written by: Me
"you are yet to answer my question about whether or not fuel will be provided by you, yet you answer my other questions"
I responded to your question on the 16th of October:
Written by: Fyre_Magik
"Fire blankets and extinguishers will be provided on site for safety requirements. Currently looking further into a medical team or St John Team."
....and the fuel?.... like I originally asked?
I reminded you to answer about the fuel too, seeing as you had answered about the safety equipment, and the St Johns people.
Thirdly:
Written by: Fyre_Magik
Firewater, and safety equipment will be provided on the night.
So you go on to casually drop it into your reply, but not where you answered the other questions.
Fourthly:
Written by: Fyre_Magik
For those of you who feel this event is Destined for DANGER and DISASTER feel free to join UmbiliciformCraterOnFace’s campaign against it!
I have no problem with your event, nor to I think it is destined for "DANGER and DISASTER" in fact, I wished you the best of luck with it:
Written by: me
I hope it all goes well for those of you who chose to participate, if you do indeed choose to. I just urge you not to let people take advantage of fire spinners like we usually are.
Good luck!
Fifthly:
Written by: Fyre_magik
For these people the LOVE to perform is sometimes greater than their NEED for money.
Companies assume fire performers will donate their time for free because of their genuine love for the art. This happens time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time again.
I dont need money. Thats why I DIDNT get a working holiday visa when I decided to visit Australia for two months. This is a holiday.
Sixthly:
Written by: Fyre_Magik
Thank you for your ever experienced words of wisdom
Well, my five years and a half years of spinning and performing beats your Written by: Fyre_Magik/ Fyre Fly
Newbie to Poi, the site and the community
so you could do well to listen to those more experienced than you. I do when they are talking as I might learn something very useful to me.
And lastly while Im on a roll:
Written by: Fyre_Magik
In response to your to your slander
Well.. technically, what I did was defamation that is, "when a person publishes to a third party words or other matter containing an untrue allegation that is damaging to the individual's reputation." (http://www.yourrights.org.uk/your-rights...en_libel_.shtml )
Things written on the internet, especially on an internet forum like this are neither Libel, nor slander, as Libel ("publication is in a permanent form - e.g a book, magazine or film" (posts can be deleted/ edit and thus are not permanent), and Slander: "in a transient form - i.e. speech" (obviouly this is text)
But hey, Im not pedantic, and as your repuation wasnt actually damaged, if I continue to be as technical as my spinning, what I didnt was neither defamation, nor libel, nor slander
To summarise: All I want is for performers to be paid, regardless of their level of experience. Companies saying its not in their budget is pure nonsence. If you want the service, you have to pay for it. Like prostitution.

if you are a beginner and you doing it cheap just for the experience don't get ripped no one should have to make a loss in the entertainment industry unless they make a gamble. at least do it for a free meal free transport to and from the gig and leave with some form of payment to pay for the eventual replacement of the equiptment if you really wan to be a performer go to the insurance company and see how much the public liability insurance is and then tell them you are a beginner and see if it is any cheaper if you do gigs like this for free you are just wrecking the industry and these companies need to know that they will only get what they pay for
and the company running the show might be not for profit but the companies that are part of the organisation make alot of money and as i under stand this is as promotion for them cheap advertisement all they have to do is make a donation to the charity that supports them instead of putting it into advertising nice one but [censored] you
