Knowing who you are doesn't make you a hippy.
Apart from in your case, cos you are a hippy. Hippy.

Just the kind of esoteric crap you'd expect from a dread-wearing, drum-loving greeny like yourself. Put the spliff down and go and practise

What I learned from parkour: There might be a best spinner, but that doesn't matter. What matters is how well you know yourself, and what you can find out about yourself, using spinning.
I agree with this point. I am very competitive, with poi personally, I want to be the best, and that drives me to practice and aim to become the best. But at no point have I forced myself to practice and been really frustrated with it and not had fun. It has always been fun and enjoyable, and in the end, that's what REALLY matters, whether you are the best or not, regardless on terms of judging is just background noise, blocked out by the peace of mind obtained from the personal enjoyment gained from having a good twirl.
That said, I think that if twirling was to be judged, it would be done so in the same fashion as sports that feature both technical skill and artistic expression, the closest relatives being baton twirling, dancing, gymnastics, figure skating etc. A panel of judges would give scores based on technical aptitude (difficulty of moves, accuracy of planes and such) blended with an ability to be expressive, original and confident in your movements.
That would be how the best would be decided. But, as I hope to be the general consensus around here, so long as you're having fun, who cares who's the "best"?

I'm a a year into Poi, but I'm amazed how many people I randomly meet that are into it as well. Every time I travel somewhere in an excess of at least 30 miles, I manage to find a spinner just by carrying sock poi around. Last chap I met was my waiter in a Panera Bread restraunt. Want to meet a spinner? Carry Sock poi in your hand or in your belt while walking around a mall.

I do this all the time, but I have yet to run into any random stranger that knows what I am doing with those sock thingees.
Where do you live? O.O I was spinning in my front yard using jailhouse poi with my girlfriend and someone yelled out from a passing car,"Poi!" . I live in a Suburban neighborhood in Texas <.<

I live in the north side of Atlanta, Georgia. Oddly enough, Im teaching at a summer art camp and one of my students, a young girl about 9 or 10, knew exactly what they were. She could even do a 3bt weave. Turns out that she takes another Circus Camp where they taught her flags and poi and all kinds of circus loveliness. Now, I've searched out other fantastic spinners in Atlanta, but this is the first stranger that has ever had a clue about what this is.

While it's inconclusive as to who the best spinner in the world is, It is for certain that the best baby spinner in the world goes to this little one
Edit: Might need to right click & 'save as' to view it.

That baby's got some moves, bet he can't do that with fire though. But man, he's so cute. There's no way I can compete with that.
