If you're interested in getting files though other P2P networks as well, you can use Shareaza (Shareaza.com) for torrents, ed2k and gnutella 1 & 2 downloads. I've found Azureus to be to bloated, but then again, I don't really use it enough to know whats good about it. Let us know what you settle on, and why!

Appologies. Bittorrent, is kind of like kazaa and other file sharing programs. For the one I have used, and I think this is th ecase for all bittorrent clients, you have to look up the file you want to download ( www.thepiratebay.org is a good one), then once yo have downloaded that file (which only contains the information ABOUT the file you want such as the total file size and who on the internet has the file) you need to open it through the bittorrent client. This will then set about downloading the actual file you want, be it a movie or a rip of an album. I think thats about all the info you might want, but I probably forgetting something...

I've been looking for a file sharing program since winmx dissapeared, but can't find anything that doesn't require my credit card details! Any pointers in the right direction? Or an exe file by email perhaps?

Winmx, may still be alive, but it's not what it used to be. I hoping more people find out and install the patch and it'll recover to it's former glory.

You got Winmx working I presume? if not the patch is available through these guys. http://www.slyck.com/I didn't have much success with shareazza, but there seems to be something going on with either my ISP, or antivirus software ,, something to do with tcp ports. I could get a feeble amount of search results, but I never managed to actually download anything.

hi everyone and thanks for your comments and reccomendations. i chose azureus in the end. main reasons being the good help files (there's a wiki dedicated to it) and that it had some nice display options i'm still having 'nat' problems (presumably cos i've not set up my norton firewall properly) and thus only get yellow smiley faces when i really want to see green ones but it seems to be downloading stuff okay so i'm just ignoring that for now. toby - i have used kazaa, winmx, gnutella in the past but i'm pretty sure that anything other than bittorrent would be useless for finding the type of files i am looking for now. cole. x

if you're using azureus then www.torrentspy.com (my fave) www.thepiratebay.org (already mentioned) and www.mininova.orgare all good sites to get your torrents from. havent found a site thats good for really obscure stuff yet though. B x

they're exactly the sites i've been using isohunt is good too but seems to have almost identical info to torrentspy. i downloaded a snes emulator last night which rocks plus i got a ripper/converter pack with dvd ripper and a converter for video to psp so i can watch all my movies on the go (when the psp eventually turns up...). it also included a .mov converter which should come in quite handy too. cole. x

www.emule-project.net
www.amule.org
www.mldonkey.org
I go for the open source programs because they don't; eat all your bandwidth, share all your files, spam you with ads, cost money.
eMule is simple enough, and so long as you can leave your computer running for ages (so you don't loose your place in download queues) can saturate your download bandwidth when doing a dozen files. You can always set limits on up/download though (and schedule limits so it can go full throttle overnight, but let you DL other stuff during the day)
aMule is a bit simpler and runs on macs too, and mldonkey is the mutts nutts, as it supports practically every P2P protocol in existance, the only problem being it's for Linux/BSD/OSX/Cygwin, and takes a bit more work to get going.
BTW eMule found your file.

erm, can we e clear here that you guys are not going to be sharing files illegally, as this is agsinst the rules of the HOPbb. And that you will only be using this P2P software to download files that contain no copyrights to them at all, like share ware progs, and trial software, and that of course you will, once the trial has run out, go out and buy the prog.....

as file sharing of copyrighted files is illegal, then youw oudl be breaking this provise, that you have sid you would adheir to by using the board....
site rules section - Unsuitable posts, photos and videos
and while i know it does not in detali say, you may not talk about file sahring, illegal or legal, if malcome was prosecuted for allowing , after a sort, you guys to talk about this on his site, without stopping you, it would mean that he would face large fines, for promoting file sharing, as some other boards have done,
and im not saying its true, or not, but they could potentially use isp tracing frommals hop srv to track down some other the users on here and prosecture them to....
not being vendictiv cole, just know that these progs work on a series of ports, and its very easy (with lots of time) for an isp to now track the usage of these programmes.

funny thing is, until your post mech, there was no suggestion of illegal activity at all... and talking about illegal filesharing is a very different thing to actually doing it. we discuss things such as illegal drugs and terrorism in the discussion threads but we don't *do* it. worse, there are files hosted in the hop gallery and hundreds linked to on the board that breach copyright laws and nothing is ever mentioned... all the p2p networks and clients discussed here are legal so i didn't really see any problem. if someone had started making a listing of where to find illegal copies of software/movies/music i agree, that would be bad, but that isn't what this thread is about at all and yes jonnny mutorrent rocks and i have indeed switched to it myself. cole. x

There are links to fileshareing networks on the thread. On DrBoo's thread there is a link to a search result.
It's best to stay on the safe side don't you think? Mech is right about forums being shut down (I admit, they have been much worse than this) and I don't want Malcolm to get in to any leagal problems because of this (However much I doubt it'll happen)

so anyway, moving onto topic. And hoping Mech isn't reading I was hunting the web for stuff and found a link to a file I wanted via a torrent client thing. So I pressed it and the default program to open it with was bitlord that aparently I already had on my computer So i opened it through bitlord and WOW! !!! What an amazing download speed!! I got a whole album in minutes instead of days and yesterday watched the southpark where they kill chef and it downloaded in 5 minutes!! FIVE MINUTES!! I'm never going back to winmx now, all that queue management is rubbish in comparison. Now if only I had more than 200meg left of my 160gig I'd be getting right jiggy with it (legal files only of course )

Bitcomet, as almost everyone I know uses it. Never had any problems with it, plus the fact it comes with links to torrent portals in its own browser makes searching pretty easy.

I've just been using the original Bittorent client. Not much in the way of options or extras, but I like it simple. I think the more important question is which site do you get your torrents from. I tend to use www.isohunt.com It's found most of the things I've been looking for, but I'm sure it's not the 'best'.

mentioned here on the last page by lavatwilight, torrentz.com is a tracker tracker (if you see what i mean). i'm still using mutorrent as my client. the only drawback so far is that it doesn't let me set priority on specific files within a torrent. but seeing as i'm not generally in a rush to download, its not that much of a problem really cole. x

i personally use bitcomet, ive used azreus and the original bittorrent client but didnt like either. havent found anything better than bitcomet really and as for a file-sharing p2p program, i use soulseek http://www.slsknet.org/ much better than all the others as long as u know how to use it properly. most users on it, dont let jus anyone d/l off them, so if u go into the rooms n get chattin to people you can trade things etc... only one thing before you use soulseek, u have to make sure all your files are sorted n arranged properly

My guess is it's a Java problem. Have a look at the support forums, and go and grab the lasest Java. Are you running 10.4.6? Run software update and grab anything you can from it.

cheers sym. i ran the software update (which added some stuff but no java related items) and i tried to manually reinstall java from apple, but that told me i already had a newer version installed. mac help said 'make sure the bsd subsystem is installed' so i found a file called bsd.pkg on my install disk and clicked that - that said there was nothing to install so i'm guessing that meant it was already installed? lastly i tried running it with rosetta forced (just because it was the only thing i hadn't tried yet) and that didn't help either. do i have to manually launch java vm or should it just get accessed when i require it? i think you are right though sym - i don't recall seeing any javascripts running on webpages i've visited so i'll test it out later by going to some that i know have java on them and seeing if they load properly. at least then i will have identified where the problem is originating from... cole. x

First off, Java and JavaScript are nothing to do with each other at all. Installing Java will not change anything to do with JavaScript working on web sites. The system updates include Java, or some update to it more often than not, so I guess you'll have all you need. I assume you went to http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/j2se50release4intel.html to get Java from Apple? If that doesn't work, download a new copy from the site. Try a beta or CVS copy to see if it has the problem.

some bad news for the jolly roger and pals "Swedish police has today taken all the servers of The Pirate Bay into custody. The police chose to do this despite the fact that the services provided by the worlds largest bittorrent tracker are fully legal in Sweden. The servers where located in a protected area, to which the police had no legal right to enter, but this was ignored. Piratbyrån (the Pirate Bureau), a swedish pro-pirate lobby organisation, also got their servers seized, since they where located in the same room. Two operators of The Pirate Bay are in police custody, and can't be reached." source: wikipedia cole. x

heya folks I've just recently started getting into bit torrent and was wondering if any of you techo torrent savy had any sound advice about speeding up transfers rates up/down etc. Whats the best way to seed.. and use trackers etc... Im using azureus. I really like it and i've read the wiki help files back the front and up and down. Most, but not all of it makes sense to me. I also got a plug in to auto set my max up and download speeds... Anyone know what the Distributed Hash Table does?. I have a rough idea of what its supposed to do... but how dop i get the most out of it? but i would like to hear about it a bit more about this stuff from folks who know how to write tech in english

what speed is your connection (up and down) and what kind of d/l speeds are you getting from bt?
i have a 10meg bb line and don't get great speeds imo (averaging about 30-40kb/s).
where did you get the auto speed setting plug-in...?

With torrents your best benchmark is to download at legal torrent (like http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/) and have a look at the speed then. Failing that, try downloading a new torrent with loads of seeders, something like a new pop album thats about 60mb with about 40 people seeding. If you find the speeds are good on them then there is little more you can do. any slow torrents are caused by slow peers and or a slow tracker. The best thing to do in that case is just leave it downloading for a long time. It will help eeryone wanting that file.

The symetrical line meas that i can upload and download 'potentially' with the same transfer rate. A spped test put mine at 2.5mb. Fastest i've donload at was 860kbps. From microsoft..
Contention ratio is the amount of people you are 'contending' with for you 10mb line... In ireland, most are 24:1 or 48:1 that means you are sharing your connection with up to 24 or 48 peopla at a time...
We were lucky to find a company that provides a far, far superior service to the rest of the competion. But now we have to move out... So want to download as much as possible in the next five days...

I'm on a lowly 1meg line, but I downloaded an album last week in less than 5 minutes. Like Sym says it depends how many seeders/peers etc there are and what their connection is like. I'm lucky that I'm with Telewest Broadband and one of their main servers is only a couple of miles from my house, I'm sure that helps get a decent and consistent connection. I used to be on the 4meg line and was on it from almost the first week it was available from Telewest, when I dropped to 1meg as part of our tv/phone/web package I didn't notice any drop in download or general web surfing speeds.....go figure. I use bitlord and it's not the best imo, not that I know what the best is but there must be better out there. Thanks for the nod towards bittornado Meg I'll go grab that this evening I think

This seems slow for your connection speed, when I lived in Bath I had a 8mg connection and the speeds where like 300-400 Kbs (dependant on the number of seeders) Have you set up the port forwarding on your router? and allowed them thru your firewall.
You can check it on this site
Here is a guide for setting up a router.

iswipe looks very cool but there are some downsides There doesnt seem to be any tech support, whatsoever. It freezes about once a minute. It finds the file on search, brilliantly. It lets you select it, but doesnt appear to actually download it. Which is a bit of a pain. Azereus on the other hand is sweet... but i would like a P2P option aswell I called up my isp and cinformed that i am suposed to have 4mb up and down. Im only getting less than fifty on BT but the techs assure me that no port forwarding is needed... i dont know anything about ports though...

Which? Open up a brower and type in : 192.168.1.1 This *should* be the router's setup page. Log in (the UN and PW will depend on if you have set them yourself, otherwise they will be seta as the default -go have a look on the manufacturers webiste or in the instruction manual) to this page. Under something like "advanced" ther should be one called "Port Forwarding". Click it. Google which ports your BT client uses, and enter them on the router's set up page. Click apply/ save and you may then need to restart the router. Then again, that might not work. But i reckon the tech people you spoke to when they said it was nothing to do with port forwarding, were talking rubbish. It depends on what program you are using and what model of router you have. I dont think they can simply say yes or no. Give that a try and let us know how you get on. Good luck.

yes, they would have been talking rubbish. Google can't tell you what ports BT uses, because each client is different and you can select almost any port. Look in the Azereus to find the port.
You will also need to know your own ip address (you should change it to static so it doesn't change when your DHCP session ends) by typing ipconfig in a command prompt.
You could also try setting up UPnP.

Thats what I meant by google for the ports. I just looked for " Azereus port forwarding " and found this: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Azureus_FAQThere must be the info you require, but I am at work and cant spend any more time pressing each of the buttons on this big chunk of plastic I have underneath my hands.

Cheers guys...
thanks for the links jon, I've been reading that whole wiki back the front for about a week now. Im getting it slow enough but sure enough.
My ISP assures me that i am get a bit rate of about 5mb... up and down... thats alot... I've managed to download at almost 900kbps from sites like apple and microsoft. Spped tests are all so different that i dont trust them.
This morning i was getting 100kps from azareus so i guess it has alot to do with other peopls upload rates and the amount of available peers and seeds too. Theres just so many bloody settings... I might switch to a different one
Also, I took off the speed managing plugin, it was saturating my bandwidth and i couldnt surf at all... it did give me a good idea of what my line capacity was so i was able to take say, 60% of that and set it.
I dont and cant have a fixed IP address with this particular ISP. Well, I can change to a business connection and get one... And seen as how im moving house today, thats what i might do. For now though, i'll make do.
Cole... What are you using for P2P outside of bit torrent?

I was talking about a fixed IP within your DMZ - from your router to your PC - not with your ISP.
I doubt you'll need a fixed IP from an ISP.

just thought i'd come back and sing the praises of demonoid.comits a members-only bittorrent tracker, which means you get people seeding for much longer (and as such, feel obliged to seed for a decent amount of time yourself). i love it - anyone who wants to join, give me a pm/email and i'll send you an invite cole. x

WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THAT THE PSP WAS SO HOT?!?
I just bought it for gaming and had no idea it even had memory let alone MP3 and movie capabilities!!!
Just downloaded season 5 of family guy for it yesterday.
I really don't need friends anymore. And certainly can forget about spinning fire... the new SSX game is coming out soon!
No WONDER Cole hasn't been here much lately. He's been working on his thumb blisters!
Oh, and for anybody else that's an SSX3 addict, there's this video that non-addicts will only find mildly amusing.

Probably a bit late for this, but..
Best thing to use fr=or torrents is BitLord, used in conjunction with a site called something I cant remember.
But Torlock and Torrents.to are very good.
DO NOT USE PIRATEBAY!!! Your more likely to get a virus than any other site, and your more likely to get in trouble, as it is one of the most well known sites, and the authoritys enjoy getting you in trouble.
