is this thread still going? if anything it seems staff spinners are to busy cracking jokes, talking absolute rubbish and dissing poi to come up with any decent philosophy...

How can you say that Poi is harder than staff and then say that staffs are stubborn bastards, what you mean is...you can't do the staff...because it is harder!!!

Does that make sense??

Well i know what I mean!

There both different.

I prefer poi, maybe because I've never learnt to do anything with my staff but occassionally I spin it around a bit for a change just because its also fun. Different fun.

Poi and Staff philosophically speaking (in my view) are two halves of a whole, both are not so much about what the ends of the object(s) are doing, but what the hands are doing in the middle, the difference comes that poi is all about avoiding the other hand, and staff (from what i can tell with my very basic abilities) is all about connecting with the other hand.

As for one being harder than the other its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, they are both challenging in different yet similar ways.

You people aren’t taking this topic in a very scholarly fashion!!!

Thus far the following 'Fire Staff Philosophies' have been postulated:

Epistemological Philosophy (Philosophy of Truth) E.g. Plato - Perfect Forms etc
“One true perfect way to spin” (counter clockwise and backwards )

and,

Metaphysical Philosophy (philosophy of ‘non’ or ‘alternative’ reality) E.g. Descartes
“There is no staff!!!” – (Yes that Lazy Bum Descartes dreamt it up before the Kid from the Matrix…)

There are many more options people!!!!!!!
As I see it we’ve still got many more staff philosophies to try out such as…
Ontological
Esoterical
Existential
Nihilistic
Continental
Post Modernism
…Ignore ‘Phenomenological’ …it smells funny.

How about…

Analytical Philosophy (Philosophy of logic/science) E.g. Bertrand Russell
If the take the follow information:
(A) = ‘I don’t want to light my pants on Fire’
(B) = ‘I can’t wedgie myself with a burning fire stick’

Insert into the Logical form (Modus Tollens).
If (A), then (B).
(Not B)
Therefore: (Not A)

If ‘I don’t want to light my pants on Fire’ (A), then ‘I can’t wedgie myself with a burning fire stick’ (B)
‘I wedgied myself with a burning fire stick’ (Not B)
Therefore:
‘‘I lit my pants on Fire’. (Not A)

Thus the first Deductively True “Analytical Fire Staff philosophy” is formed

P.s. All philosophers currently turning over in their graves, or grinding their teeth on their keyboards…please excuse the gross generalisations and inaccuracies in the above statements

What about contact staff?....when the hands are generally just pretty props waving about and having no effect on the staffs movement at all....I am currently trying to keep my staff spinning with the LEAST amount of hand interaction..(admittedly I use my wrists and forearms) to get that beautiful FEEL for the movement

its still about connection though, on a greater scale, rather than mainly hands, its everything but hands

lol well since you ask dave, in a private message from pyromania42 about spinning in cambridge, i was (and i quote) "officially deemed The Person Who Knows :-)"

and in here pyrojulia said she wanted to "meet the legendary Vampricacid!"

Just been thinking, How can you say contact isnt about connecting, its probabily more about connecting than normal staff

lol ive pretty much jst read this whole thread, its hilarious!!!
neways
even though im still a newbie and havent been staffing 4 long. i dont think poi could be nearly as hard as staff (cept 4 not getting it tangled up) but back to the topic, "staff philosophy", all my urges are telling me to say "be one with the fire" but that could apply to poi aswell, but i reckon wat kyrian said about 'fluidity' is pretty good and Vampyricacid's little message down the bottom "If It Don't Flow, It Won't Go." I Say......
ummm i dunno wat i say...
but yer "If It Don't Flow, It Won't Go" and "Fluidness...." is good,
if some smart person could mingle those up into a smart little saying i think we might have done our job as staffers!

I reckon the difference between staff and poi is:
Poi it tends to be u dancing with the poi spinning around you where as Staff seems to be spinning around you and its doing the dancing. I dont know if that makes any sence, but it does to me.

i just made it up on the spot!

however, it could refer to fighting, where spinning simply confuses the opponent as they dont know where the strike will come from, and if the fight is worthwhile in the first place?

*head explodes* its not meant to have a meaning! damn my subconcious!
