Ok, try removing all your codecs from the device manager..oh wait I said that before. Did you do it? Try downloading the nemo codec pack from your choice of P2P software.

I have downlaoded the Mino (which i assume is the same) codec 5 beta release.
Should I have gotten the final previous release instead?
I installed at...and it still doesnt work.
However, I just learnt, that when I thought the computer crashes after closing either media player or divx, it doenst actually crash, as its just happned now, but i had my music playing away, divx crashed, closed it, then computer wouldnt respond to mouse or keyboard (I have a wireless pair- will this matter?)
I am now doing a full reinstallation of SP2.

Yes. I removed every single one of them just now. Then opened media player...then tried to open a song. It said it downloaded the Frauenhoffer (MP3) codec fine, installed it, then I think as it was about to play, it then crahed, with the same error.

Now after looking for the error from the PCTV program, I think its the ffdshow.ax that is creathign the problem.
Heres the error report from the PCTV thing:
AppName: pctvassi.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: ffdshow.ax
ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 001f943f
The Mod names on both are the same.
Is this whats wrong?
Turns out that "ffdshow.ax" is the Mpeg 4 video decoder (look http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0052.aspx at the bottom)
So if I delete that..
will it all work again?
well...im going to delete it anyway..
whats the worst that could happen Dr Pepper?

I think everything is working fine again.
i would like to thank everyone here for trying to help me, but ultimatly so rubbish that I had to work out the problem myself.
Genuine thanks.
At least I know if it happens again, I will know what to do again in the future, and futhremore, I feel better as I worked it out.
and a special to Sym.
The wierd thing is, how come there are loads of codecs installed again?
I didnt download or install any after I deleted them all..

No worries... Windows does funy things, and WMP does even more funy things. On your 2mb connection the codecs would be able to download and install without you knowing about it, so I guess WMP just did it for you.

Windows Media Player totally sucks and that's the end of it. Dump it. Don't worry about why, it's like wondering about the purpose of evil.. ( to thicken the plot said the Zen master...)
Get iTunes. Stable sweet and perfect on a Mac and I believe not too bad on a PC

"Windows Media Player totally sucks" I think we have established that WMP wasnt the problem and besides, why do you hate it?

Hey there UCOF. Because of all the above posts!! codes and codecs and xyzabc.stuffups's. And because of trying to use it on half a dozen peeps machines and there always being weirdo probs with it. Freezing, decoding itself and whatever else it can think of to do. ( yes I know I'm anthopomorphising here.... Just the other day I made a simple 7 track CD for a client, gave it to him to play and his WMP immediately went to to track three, ate his goldfish and then thew up on his shoes!!!! He stuffed around for 5 mins trying to get it to just go back a track, till I got cross and put it in my McLappie and had it going in about 3 secs. But truly, I am spoiled cos of iTunes now.

UCOF, do you not think that software shouldn't tie itself in with the system to the extent that you can't fully uninstall is?
Thats my gripe with it. Most software will work again after a reinstall because it has all the files it needs to work, but WMP couldn't work without this (and mony) other files that other software uses.
Anyway, this could turn in to an anti-Ms rant that I know you hate.
newgabe, iTunes really is great, but it doesn't play video and that was pary of the problem. WMp does have a very bad interface after you're been using [[insert Apple made software name here]], but people use computers in different ways and UCOF likes to use WMP.
We however can sit back with that warm smug Mac user feeling and try our best not to make fun. (oops...there I go again...sorry UCOF...)

Yes thanks I feel appropriately ticked off in the nicest possible way! Sorry for butting in on your thread there UCOF with my amateurish approach! I realise some people LIKE working out complex problems to do with codes etc whereas for me it is a sign something wasn't thought out well in the first place.. and it's rarely me who can think it out better! WMP seems to have overreached itself though in trying to do both functions: audio and video, and ends up doing neither efficiently. A bit like my working life at the moment. Which I'd better get back to!

Oh no no no... it a pain in the arse trying to figure out what is wrong with a computer. I love it when someone solves a problem for me. Its just that no one could, and I think I must have had a divine moment.
