While on the subject of ARDS , Ive put a thread in the technical discussion section asking about respiratory problems associated with spinning off staves. I suspect that may not be the right location , but it is well marked so you can find it easily, and its probably hard to relocate it to a new area.
I can add yet another reason not to fire breath, The breather only sees a red flash through closed eyes, and the audiance probably thinks the 2 fireballs off a freshly wet staff is twice as good anyway. Fire Breathing itself is not exciting at all , the excitement instead comes from the danger of spraying burning fuel over yourself if you chicken out half way through, or face the cirtainty of lipid pneumonia if you cough, inhale, or otherwise distract yourself.
When I tried it I had wanted to do it for 8 years and practiced for months with water and then almost got over such a stupid idea. However 4 years without sex re motivated me to try this reckless act, and I can assure you I now devote my desperate men do crazy things energy into seeking a suitable wife instead.
Good living frugal environmentally aware Christian women of sober and drug free habits are not turned on by Fire Breathing either. Do something safer if you want an adrenaline fix . I recommend walking over hot coals as a far safer activity (and leaving any information you have on this activity on my firewalking thread under Technical Discussions).
I have done more than my fair share of stupid things in my life, ( handling poisonous snakes, climbing cliffs without ropes, making fireballs with explosives and 20L of petrol, climbing power pylons, walking over hot coals and the like) of wich Fire Breathing was by far the most stupid, the least impresive to women, and foul to the taste for good measure. DONT DO IT , DONT DO IT and once more DONT DO IT. Even if you are male, young and stupid, the head near your testicles can be still be overuled by the head on your shoulders .Remember to take advantage of this capacity if you ever feel inclined to try Fire Breathing. IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK!!!!!

All this talk about fire eating and blindness is making me worried i actually quite enjoy it (fire eating, not worrying that is) Are there any links to documentation about it?

I'd need better documentation of this before I bought it. There's still a nasal cavity between the mouth and the chiasm.
Heres one but thats methanol poisoning I think.
What are they fire eating with? Australian metho no longer routinely has methanol due to too many poisonings through deliberate ingestion.

A friend of mine suffers from regular chest infections and I'm trying to talk her out of trying Fire Breathing, Doc, any extra info you can give? Is a weak chest likely to make Fire Breathing even more dangerous?

No, oracle, this is *NOT* about fire eating.
It's about Fire Breathing.
i know the tread was about fire breating, but i was refering to this:

...fire-eating caused partial blindness in some cases through overheating of the optic chiasm (bitemporal hemianopia)
Ah, I see. Yes, don't ever eat or breathe with any methanol-containing fuel. In fact, I advise people to just avoid methanol, period. In my opinion, it should be banned for public sale. It's hardly an indispensible chemical for home use and it causes a lot of illness.

That and make it sticky perhaps so that people can still contribute to it as a thread? I think it would have more impact there.

So I've never much been impressed with Fire Breathing, and I've always known the risks. I've never wanted to learn, and this thread only reinforces that fact. But I smoke... where's the logic in that?

Yes, thanks for this. It is so useful to have good information to give to those who will listen. Though of course some will not.
Just a few weeks ago, I was in charge of safety for a fire space at a festival. I told a bloke that we did not allow Fire Breathing there, and why. He made noises that he understood and 'respected' that. That night he had a spin with staff, which he was not particularly good at. So, (maybe to maintain his ego that he was something special?) the next night he did Fire Breathing just outside the space. Close to people, spraying fuel everywhere; telling people this was 'real' fire skill, not that 'hippy twirling stuff'. Sigh.

Umm, anyhooo - yes, Mike's lovely words are now fully integrated with pictures in the Library section. It's a work of art it is and many thanks to Doc for updating it for us.
